Algebraic substitution is not very exciting at best. Finding a formula that always generates prime numbers will make you world famous. This task card combines the two math skills into an exciting discovery exercise. Students get to explore the effectiveness of certain formulas in generating primes (while they are doing lots of substitution). Eventually they will see that this exercise is futile, but will hopefully have fun on the journey.

Students (and real people need to be able to do percentage problems quickly and efficiently as a life skill. The focus and aim of this resource is to achieve that goal.

If I weigh 210 lb and lose 15%, what do I now weigh?

If the price of an item of $80 goes up by 20%, what does it cost now?

It is always a good strategy to review essential skills with your students, and this is right up there with the most essential!

This task, (with complete answer key),

• guides students through the discovery of equal proportions in the sides of similar triangles.
• reviews relevant Algebra skills with ratios and proportions.
• applies the new found knowledge of ratio and proportion in real-life situations by determining the height of real-life objects.
