In this product, students will learn about The American Civil War. Students will also learn the following: Who the President was during the Civil War, the main cause of the Civil War, abolitionists - Frederick Douglas, John Brown, Harriet Tubman, and Harriet Beecher Stowe - when they were born and where, where they died and where, what they did during the Civil War, and how they made a difference for the enslaved or tried to help them, The Underground Railroad - what it was and how it was used, The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 - what it was and what the federal government was responsible for finding, why the South relied on slavery as much as they did and what their concerns were if it was to stop, The Confederate States, the first state to secede, and the Union, what unified means, when the Civil War began, how long the Civil War was, some major battles that took place that include - The Battle of Shiloh, The Battle of Bull Run, The Battle of Antietam, The Battle of Fredericksburg, The Battle of Gettysburg, and The Siege of Vicksburg are reviewed, what happened at each of these battles, who won, and facts about each battle are presented in this product, what happened when the Civil War ended, the kinds of weapons that were used during the Civil War on both sides - muskets, bayonets, and cannons, Why Abraham Lincoln didn't want African Americans to participate in the Civil War, who mane up the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, how brave African Americans were during the Civil War, what women did around the home and the community during the Civil War - how they took care of the home, raised money for war supplies, where they worked - factory and government jobs, acted as nurses to take care of sick and wounded soldiers, became spies on both sides (North and South), and how women would would dress up as men so they could fight in the Civil War, children and what their role was during the Civil War is also reviewed - how old children were when they had to help fight during the Civil War, younger children had to help during the Civil War as drummers and messengers, and how children felt when their family members were gone for long periods of time or never returned home.

The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. Throughout the product, after each page of notes is reviewed, students will answer comprehension questions to review what was discussed on the previous pages. At the end of the product, students are provided with a review that includes multiple choice questions and short answer questions.

The Road to the Revolutionary War Adapted Notes and Review

This product was made for students to learn the following: Vocabulary words - parliament, independence, first Continental Congress, Minutemen, repeal, boycott, The Boston Tea Party, Declaration of Independence, imported, and commander.

In this product, students will learn about Independence Day/4th of July and why this holiday is celebrated in the United States of America. Students will also learn about the French and Indian War, who it was between, why it happened, who won the war, where France had colonies and where Great Britain had colonies, the Ohio River Valley, land east and west of the Mississippi River, the importance of beaver pelts and what they were used for, Great Britain implemented a tax that they wanted the Colonists to pay on certain goods, what a tax is, why the colonists were unhappy about this tax, the goods that were taxed, Parliament and the laws they wrote regarding tax, The Stamp Act, what it was, what it required Colonists to do, how the Colonists felt about this, and what the Colonists did to stop this tax are reviewed. Students will learn about other laws that the Parliament passed that had to do with purchasing goods such as tea and paper, what the colonists did about this, and how they felt about this tax, The Boston Massacre, what caused it, where it happened, why it happened, how the Colonists felt and why, what the American Revolution is, what happened after the Boston Massacre with Parliament, The Boston Tea Party, what the Boston Tea Party was, what happened during the Boston Tea Party, how Parliament responded to the actions of the Colonists, The Boston Port Act and the Quartering Act - laws that were imposed by the Parliament, and how the Colonists felt about these laws, the American Revolution - where it started, Minutemen and how they helped during the American Revolution, when the American Revolution began, the first shots of the American Revolution, where the Colonists and the British Soldiers were going and why before and during the American Revolution, Battle at Bunker Hill, what happened during the Battle at Bunker Hill, the Second Continental Congress meeting to discuss needing an army with supplies, the commander - George Washington was chosen to lead the Colonists and why he was chosen for this position, how the Declaration of Independence came about, who was involved with writing the Declaration of Independence, events that led to the Declaration of Independence when looking at a timeline and answering questions pertaining to the timeline are covered. Students will also review Thomas Paine's pamphlet - Common Sense and why he wrote it. A review that includes multiple choice and short answer questions cover a variety of topics covered in this product. This review is located at the back of the product.

The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. After reviewing and discussing the notes, they will answer comprehension questions to review what was discussed on previous pages, and a timeline that led to the Declaration of Independence is included, maps that show land east and west of the Mississippi River are included along with a map that shows where the first shots were fired during the American Revolution.

This product was made for students to learn the following: Vocabulary words - settlers, rural, colonists, frontier, plantations, treaty, Boston, Philadelphia, New England Colonies, Middle Colonies, beavers, Charleston, the Southern Colonies, and the colonies that are in each of those colonies.

In this product, students will learn about England's first colonies. They will expand upon the first settlements in Jamestown and Plymouth, and will dive into learning about the 13 colonies, students will learn how the 13 colonies are alike, how William Penn helped the colonists and how he formed a relationship with the Indigenous Peoples, the New England Colonies, where they were located, the biggest city in the New England Colonies, how farming was difficult in this area and why, the short growing season of crops, and how they found food, how people earned a living in this colony, the Middle Colonies and how they had rich farmlands available to them, what kinds of crops were grown in this area, the kinds of jobs that people had, why beavers were so important in this colony and what they did with their fur, Philadelphia and how it was developing so much quicker than New York and why, William Penn and what he did when he started the colony of Pennsylvania, what made New York's population increase and how it became the biggest city in the Middle Colonies, the Southern Colonies, the biggest city being Charleston, the kinds of goods that came into the Charleston harbor, what plantations were, the kinds of jobs that were on plantations, the crops that were grown, how plantations needed many slavery, brief introduction to slavery and how they were forced to work on plantations in the south, the frontier, the western edge of the 13 colonies, how entire families needed to work to survive and why, and the kinds of work that frontier settlers needed to do.

The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. After reviewing and discussing the notes, there are fill in the blank questions with the missing vocabulary words and a key to help locate answers. Students will also answer comprehension questions to review what was discussed on previous pages, and a chart about the 13 colonies and why they were settled and when. There are several questions that relate with this chart.

Students will learn when the Industrial Revolution began and ended, what kinds of goods were manufactured, how large factories and technology produced goods in large quantities, how electricity, the production line, and the Bessemer steel press were utilized during the Industrial Revolution, the first textile mill and how it started the Industrial Revolution in 1793, who Samuel Slater was and how he made a profound impact during the Industrial Revolution, the major technology changes that happened during the Industrial Revolution such as coal, the steam engine, steel, iron, and petroleum, the move from people working at home and in small shops to large factories and why, steam power and how it became bigger and more powerful during this time, transportation that includes - steamboats, trains, and the Transcontinental Railroad and how they were useful during the Industrial Revolution, electricity - who invented it, and why it was important during the Industrial Revolution, the what the telegraph was, when the telephone was invented and by who, how it was beneficial and used during the Industrial Revolution, textile technology and how it grew during the Industrial Revolution - The Spinning Jenny and the Spinning Mule - what they were, how they differed from each other, and how they may production easier than spinning wool or cotton by hand, what the cotton gin was - who invented it, the sewing machine - who invented it, and what it was used for, cultural changes during the Industrial Revolution and what they were, working conditions and how they were dangerous for those that worked in factories, child labor - the age of children working, how children were treated, how much children earned, and how many hours children would work each day, why businesses relied on child labor, who breaker boys, newsies, and matchstick girls were, what they did, the dangers of their jobs, the changes that were made, and how they overcome those changes, the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 - what it was, how it changed labor laws for children, and facts about the Act.

The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. Students will Adopt a Friend for the holiday Kwanza/ Ramadan / Hanukkah season and will explore ways of life during the holiday season.

Geography, Map Projections: Which Map Would You Use? Google Slide + Powerpoint

Teaching map projections can be challenging. This lesson is an easy way to give students the foundation they need to understand what map projections are and how each has its own level of accuracies and distortions based on the size and shape of land masses and measurement/distance between points. This works very well with my students and is a fund group cooperative activity that requires higher-level thinking skills and or helps students develop higher-level thinking skills by analyzing various map projections, and determining their accuracies and distortions.

LESSON: MAP PROJECTIONS: WHICH ONE WOULD YOU USE?

GRADE LEVEL: 7-12th

TIME FRAME: 90-120 MINUTES (TWO 60-MINUTE CLASS PERIODS)

TYPE OF ACTIVITY: GROUP COOPERATION ACTIVITY
NOTE: ADJUST MARGINS UNDER PAGE SETUP BEFORE PRINTING or SCALE TO FIT TO AVOID GRAPHICS FROM BEING CUT OFF.

OBJECTIVE:

  • The learner will familiarize his/herself with the following map projections: Robinson Projections, Mercator Projections, Goode Projection, & Hammer Projection
  • The learner will understand theaccuracies and distortions of flat map projections.
  • The learner will understand the three variables of map projections: Shape, size &
    distance.
  • The learner will investigate and explore various map projections to determine their accuracies and distortions.
  • The learner will be able to determine what map projections can be used for accuracies of size, shape & distance.

MATERIALS:

  • Presentation: Google slide format & PowerPoint presentation (included in zip file).
  • Comparison Chart Listening Chart (1 per student)
  • Activity Instructional Sheet: Map It! (1 per group)
  • Internet connections to obtain a copy of map projections. (For each group)
  • Printer to be able to print the map projection.
  • Poster boards or butcher paper are cut into the size of poster boards. (One per group)
  • Rubric: Map It Group Presentation
  • Provide students with glue, markers, crayons, colored pencils, rulers, and scissors.

PREPARATION:

  • Review the presentation and be prepared to discuss the accuracies and distortions of the maps presented.
  • Make a copy of the listening guide for each student.
  • Have students bring posterboards for group assignments or cut butcher paper into
    poster board size pieces.
  • Make a copy of the Activity Instructional Sheet: Map It! 1 per group.
  • Make sure your students will have access to the internet to find a map projection
    to examine and a printer that will allow them to print off the map projection.
  • Print a rubric for each group so they know the requirements.

CLASSROOM SETUP:

  • A desk and or table will be set up for students to work in teams of two’s, three’s, or with whatever the instructor feels comfortable.

INTRODUCTION: (10 minutes)

  • PowerPoint Presentation or Google Slide Show (This is the same presentation)
  • The PowerPoint presentation is included in the zip file.
  • GOOGLE DOC SLIDE SHOW -- will receive with the purchase

PROCEDURE: (Group Reading Activity—30 minutes)
Divide the class into groups. Provide each group with the Instruction sheet: Map It! As well as a rubric, poster board, crayons, colored pencils, markers, glue, a ruler and scissors. Explain the instructions to the class based on the Instruction Sheet: Map It. Review what the group needs to present during their group presentation using the grading rubric.

CLOSURE / EVALUATION: (20-30 minutes)
Students will present as a group their findings regarding their map projection.

This lesson is easy enough for 5th graders to understand yet works well with students up to grade 12. Modifications can be made as needed.

Understanding the Four Economic Industries + Community Service Project

This cooperative learning economics industry and factor of production lesson addresses the four economic industries: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, and quaternary Industries. A nation's economy can be divided into various sectors. Understanding these is important in understanding how our nation's economy works. Your students will have fun learning a lot about these industries!

A community service project is incorporated into this lesson. Students bring in food items such as cereal, canned goods, or anything that can be donated to a community food pantry. Make arrangements with the local food pantry to drop off or pick up the items. The items will be used for the lesson.

Students will use higher-level thinking skills to demonstrate how a product can begin in a Primary Industry and end up in the Quaternary Industry, and how each industry can play a vital part in how products are made and distributed.

This lesson includes:

  • Detailed teacher instructions
  • A PowerPoint on the four economic industries
  • Short reading assignment: "From Where Did Your Product Come?"
  • Authentic learning experience using real food to understand the four

economic industries.
