Identify the Verb in a Sentence

By Jessica Policelli

Objective:
Help students identify the verb in a sentence, enhancing their understanding of sentence structure and improving their reading and writing skills.

What is a Verb?
A verb is a word that expresses an action, occurrence, or state of being. It is a crucial part of a sentence, as it often tells what the subject is doing.

Types of Verbs:

  1. Action Verbs: Describe physical or mental actions (e.g., run, think, play).
  2. Linking Verbs: Connect the subject to additional information (e.g., is, are, seem).
  3. Helping Verbs: Assist main verbs to express tense, mood, or voice (e.g., have, will, can).

How to Identify the Verb:

  1. Ask Questions:
  • Who is doing something? (Subject)
  • What are they doing? (Action/Linking Verb)
  1. Look for Action Words:
  • Words that show what the subject is doing are usually verbs.
  1. Identify Linking Verbs:
  • If the sentence describes a state of being or connects the subject to more information, find the linking verb.
  1. Check for Helping Verbs:
  • Look for auxiliary verbs that accompany a main verb.

Practice Activity:

  1. Read the following sentences:
  • The cat jumps over the fence.
  • She is a great artist.
  • They will be attending the concert.
  1. Identify the verbs and classify them as action, linking, or helping.

Tips for Success:

  • Remember that a sentence can have more than one verb.
  • Use the context of the sentence to determine the correct verb if it’s not immediately clear.
  • Practice with varied sentence structures to become more comfortable identifying verbs.

Conclusion:
Recognizing verbs is essential for mastering language skills. Encourage students to practice regularly and apply their knowledge in writing and reading exercises.

Native American Women: Reading Worksheet * U.S. History *ELA *Women's History*

By Christa Nonnemaker

This 4-page Native American Women: Reading Assignment and Worksheet provides an overview of the various activities, attributes and activities of women in Native American tribal groups. It covers the time period from the pre-Columbian era through 1810 and highlights three different tribal groups. As a close reading assignment, it is also ideally suited for home schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. THOMAS JEFFERSON'S "THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE" [TEXT]

By Richard B Williams

This Thomas Jefferson's "The Declaration of Independence" product provides students a chance to experience what happens when we are displeased with our government and what he offers as a solution. This academic essay allows students to read and analyze this canonized work about breaking away from oppression. 10th - 12th Graders will love this short work and product. Check it out!

SUMMARY:

The Declaration of Independence, in U.S. history, document that was approved by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, explains why the Congress on July 2 “unanimously” by the votes of 12 colonies (with New York abstaining) had resolved that “these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be Free and Independent States.” Students will understand why the United States of America celebrates the Fourth of July, or Independence Day. This work prompts readers/citizens to change our communities, our societies, our world by politely defying our government.

This 10th - 12th grade canonized work allows students to understand the need for standing up for our rights when we feel we are treated unjustly by our own government.
