This set of mixed media weeping willow art projects contains 5 projects based on the artwork of Claude Monet.  These projects use a variety of materials, truly inspire students’ creativity & are a student favorite. These projects were designed to be used for Veterans Day and Memorial Day because Monet created this series of paintings to show his grief.  They can be used with an artist study, a unit on plants or trees, Impressionism, or any time of year and are a great way to bring social-emotional learning (SEL) into your classroom. 

This lesson is highly engaging, multi-disciplinary, and contains 5 different projects. It is designed for 2nd-5th grade students but can be used with middle school students too. The variety of projects is such that centers may be set up to create the backgrounds in one class and the tree and/or leaves during another class.

I used pencil to sketch everything out in student sketchbooks and on final copy newsprint paper. I used black crayon OR black oil pastel (depending on grade level) to first outline the major features of the pencil drawing. The older students used oil pastels. After outlining, white crayon OR white oil pastels were used for the self-portrait eyes, and a few other areas. Pattern was a focus throughout the composition whether it showed up on the person or in the background. I hope you and your kiddos love this! Enjoy.

Some collage skills were added to the assignment at the end of the unit when students needed to cut/glue down strips of construction paper to the bottom of the Final Copy Field of Flowers, to look like fence posts.
