LESSON FOUR will have students examine;

• the period of the Jim Crow era, with a focus on the segregation of schools.
• the implications of monumental Supreme Court decisions of 'Plessy v. Ferguson', and 'Brown V. Board of Education'.

Choice of three supplementary activities; 

• The 1st Optional Activity will have students analyze four political cartoons. Students will identify whether the author was FOR or AGAINST the Jim Crow Laws, & describe supportive details from the cartoon on their POLITICAL CARTOON HANDOUT.

• The 2nd Optional Activity will have students critically read a primary source article titled ‘A TALE OF TWO SCHOOLS’, and respond to text dependent questions in their ‘TALE OF TWO SCHOOLS QUESTIONS HANDOUT. The teacher can do a read-aloud, OR students can read independently. Class discussion is encouraged.

• The 3rd Optional Activity will have students analyze a film titled ‘FREEDOM SONG’. Students will apply their knowledge from their guided notes, and respond to open-ended questions in their FREEDOM SONG HANDOUT.

This critical reading activity will have students analyze the Korean War from two different sources of information; each of which take a different position on the underlying causes and effects of this war. Engagement and organizing one’s thoughts is an integral component to this lesson, as students will fill out a KWL chart, along with a T-chart that serves to identify the main differences between each source. Class discussion and debate are promoted as the lesson invites student interpretation and opinion.

There are ten informational reading passages about plant adaptations and ten informational passages about animal adaptations. There are follow-up activities for each. This is a great activity to do jigsaw style.

It also contains both our plant and animal adaptations poster sets. There are photographs of each ecosystem within these resources.

It was made for the NGSS 3-LS2 Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics. It covers the ecosystems:

- desert

- ocean

- arctic tundra

- wetlands

- temperate forest

The passages were written with third graders in mind, but the information is very interesting and complex and would be useful for upper grades as well. Even I learned things while researching the adaptations!
