Real-Life Math Fun Activity! Practical Stats - Do tall students jump high?

It is always a good strategy to review essential skills with your students, and this is right up there with the most essential!
Do tall students jump high and far? Do the same students jump high and far? Students collect their own quantitative data to answer these and other questions. The data collection does not take long. Afterwards, students calculate the measures of central tendency - mean, median, mode, Q1, Q3, min, max, range and upper and lower outliers (extremes). The handout (with complete answer key for the teacher) contains the formulas students need in order to do all calculations.
This project has been tried, tested and refined in my own middle and high school classes for many years.

Students compare 4 water containers quantitatively for how effectively they keep water warm and cold. They also compare them qualitatively, looking at price, durability, design and other subjective measures.

Pump up and motivate your strong math students with this engaging, hands-on project-based learning which will have them discovering the history of constellations, measuring constellations, working on challenging math problems and creating their own constellations.
Do you teach a math enrichment class, or do you have students in your grades 5 and 6 classrooms who are on enrichment programs? Particularly when it comes to multi-levelled classrooms, the focus tends to be on the students with academic struggles, but our strong students need opportunities to push themselves and to stay engaged.
In this document, you'll discover 32 pages of activities, projects, research and artistic activities in line with geometry and angles which will have your students keeping busy while your grade-level and below-grade level students can have you in other ways.
You'll find:
- 60 Constellation cards and a guide on how to use them.
- A second set of 60 constellation cards with "lettered" corners (i.e. ∠ABC).
- A set of response pages to measure all corners in the 60 given constellations.
- A reading comprehension piece on the history of constellations and astronomy.
- 2 pages of questions and an answer key for the reading comprehension piece.
- "Les symboles du Zodiac" - An activity sheet on naming the different constellations of the zodiac.
- A research project on a constellation:
- success criteria + detailed explanation of components;
- worksheets for research information.
- "Des calculs célestes" - 3 pages of challenging word problems with an answer key.
- "Crée ta propre constellation" - A following directions activity on creating constellations with specific angles and shapes within them.

Volume of Rectangular Prism: Our Scrappy Patchwork Quilt:

Scrappy Patchwork Quilts
A scrappy quilt uses a variety of different fabrics that may or may not use a consistent theme. In this new version of cut and paste, students will make a scrappy quilt using a variety of pattern blocks included in the activity. The students must complete a set of questions or activities to know what numbered pattern to use and where it should be placed on their quilt. Each quilt has its own color scheme (color chart) and those are the colors students will need to create a one-of-a-kind scrappy quilt. Each quilt comes with a header, and some have additional activities students must complete to finish their quilts. Each quilt once assembled with header is 11x14 inches (does not include the size if a quilt has an additional activity).

Decimal Multiplication Math - Cotton Candy Stand - Project Based Learning

Are you looking for a fun way to practice multiplication, subtraction, and addition with decimals? Then look no further! This is an engaging activity for all students. This is a fun math project to practice multiplication with decimals. Students will get to put their math skills into practice in a real life situation. They will create a mock cotton candy stand where they will have to be in charge of buying their product, figuring out how much each customer owes, and how much they will profit. This activity lets each student set up their own cotton candy stand, so all their answers may differ. At the end of the activity students will determine if their cotton candy stand was successful, whether they made a big enough profit to do it again.
This activity has students practice multiplying, dividing, and subtracting numbers with decimals.
What's included:
- A letter to the teacher explaining the task.
- A letter to the students (business owner) explaining their task.
- A page for students to create their own sign for their shop.
- The product page, where students will pick what products they will buy.
- Hourly sales page (There are two options) One will break it down for each step and there is another page that is more challenging for your higher math students to stretch their thinking and not lay out each step explicitly.
- A total sales sheet with reflection questions.
- A social media post for students to create.
The best part? Students have autonomy over their own cotton candy stand. Let them have the reins of their learning. It allows for math practice and a little creativity.
Get creative in the classroom and have your students apply real world math. Show them where they might use multiplication, addition, and subtraction of decimals. Get rid of the boring old math worksheets and let your students create their own little business.
