Computer Hardware & Software - Build a Computer | Distance Learning

Teach the basics of computer hardware and software while letting students explore what's inside the computer! This unit helps students explore and understand the basic components inside the computer. This is perfect for any technology class in upper elementary or middle school. All files provided are fully editable, allowing teachers to make modifications for differentiation or personalization if they choose.

A Microsoft PowerPoint presentation (fully editable) is included to introduce the topic to the class and can be used as a whole class presentation or provided to students to explore on their own. The first part of the assignment involves students identifying and defining the parts of the computer, using either MS PowerPoint or Google Slides to create a presentation. Next, students research specific computer hardware components and “build” two different computers, using either MS Excel or Google Sheets, and remaining within a given budget. A template in Excel that can also be opened in Sheets is provided. Teacher and student resources are included with instructions, sites for research and lesson extension ideas. A basic grading rubric for each project, is also included.

The projects can be completed individually, or students can work in pairs. These projects were created for grades 7-8 but could also be used with upper elementary students.

Materials Required

· Access to computers for each student (or small group)

· Internet access

· Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel OR Google Slides and Sheets

"Junkbox Wars" Marble Maze Project - Engineering Design Process

This STEM project encourages teamwork as students utilize the Engineering Design Process to design, build, test and re-engineer a marble maze created with limited materials. Each group is given a box or bag with the same materials and each team has the same time to design the best possible maze that will allow a standard marble to make the longest possible run.

What's Inside the Computer?: Learning about the Parts of the Computer

Inside the Computer: Identifying Parts of the Computer project helps students understand what is inside the computer as well as where peripheral devices plug into the computer. Used in conjunction with learning how to do their own troubleshooting, this is a perfect introduction lesson for a technology class, or any class that is using 1:1 technology.

As an introduction to the lesson, the teacher can show a short video about the computer’s interior parts (included in the resources), or let students examine the parts of an open computer in the classroom. Obtain an old computer that can be touched without concern for damage either from an old computer you may have or ask parents for a donation. In my classes, we use both the video and the hands-on activity since students love taking things apart!

The second part of the introduction involves showing students where things plug into the computer. This is a great start to helping them become more independent computer users by learning how to troubleshoot basic problems with their computers to make sure the peripheral device is plugged in! Again, demonstrating on an actual computer in the classroom is best as the exact locations for plugging in varies by computer.

Finally, have students demonstrate their understanding by completing the two worksheets included. Depending on time and your preference, they can complete labeling the parts inside the computer after the first portion of the introduction and then complete the second part of the worksheet that has them label where things are plugged in after you review that with them. Or, if you prefer, you can do both parts of the introduction and then let them complete both worksheets at the same time. Worksheets are editable and students can complete them on the computer or you can print them and let them complete them if you prefer.

The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be adapted for upper elementary or high school students.

Genius Hour, Passion Projects and 20% Time Projects have gained in popularity over the past several years as students seek relevance in their work, an authentic audience, and more control of their own learning. These lessons and resources will get you started with this project in your classroom.

In these projects, students are given time to work on a project that is of interest to them to further their learning. They will use formulas (included) to learn how to calculate averages, determine percentages and use fractions, and other basic math skills used in this industry.

Art of Vincent van Gogh - WebQuest & Art Project | Distance Learning

In this lesson, students learn fun facts about Vincent van Gogh and his art as they complete a WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt) to answer questions about the topic. Then, they use that knowledge to create an art project of their own, using van Gogh's style, in Microsoft Paint, 3D Paint, or one of these free Web 2.0 tools: SketchPad (https://sketch.io/sketchpad/) or SumoPaint (https://www.sumopaint.com/home/#app) that do not require download. A complete answer key is provided for the WebQuest for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students. The student questions are included in both a print version and a digital (editable) version to make it easy for students to complete the lesson digitally or on paper. Also included are tutorial links to assist students with the software for the art project.

This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary as well.
