The Call of the Wild Pre-Reading Chalk Talk Group Activity-NO PREP ELA
By Perfectly Planned Designs
This Pre-Reading Chalk Talk is a great no-prep activity that you can use to introduce the novel, The Call of the Wild by Jack London. This PRINTABLE and DIGITAL lesson is completed in small groups and is more interactive than any Anticipation Guide I’ve ever used! As they complete this Chalk Talk, students will be activating prior knowledge about the deeper issues in the story. You will love this well-organized activity that allows students to collaborate with each other interactively, whether it be at their devices working on the same file, or moving around the room! Printable PDF and Google Drive versions are included, as well as a printable Reflection sheet that will allow them to reflect on the ideas presented.
A Chalk Talk is a way to have a silent discussion about a question. Pre-reading and anticipatory activities are comprehension strategies that are used before reading to activate students' prior knowledge and build curiosity about a new topic. Completed before reading, this engaging Chalk Talk will stimulate students' interest in a topic and set a purpose for reading.
INCLUDED WITH YOUR PURCHASE:
Note: This resource can be completed as a classroom activity on chart paper or online with laptops, Chromebooks, tablets, or any device that supports Google Slides. The included Teacher's Guide includes access to the link that will allow you to make your own copy of the resource for use in Google Classroom/Google Drive.
IDEAS FOR USING THIS RESOURCE:
Collaborative Online Pre-Reading Activity: Divide students among six groups and have them rotate through the six pre-reading Chalk Talk questions, reflecting on a different aspect of the text at each station. The best part of this activity is that ALL the students in your classwork SIMULTANEOUSLY on the same file as you supervise! Only one file to have to open and grade!
Collaborative Printed Pre-Reading Activity: A printable version of the questions is also included so that the Chalk Talk activity can be conducted in the classroom using chart paper. We Beat The Street Chapter 1 Questions, We Beat the Street Reading Comprehension
ABOUT THIS RESOURCE
★ Text: We Beat The Street
★ Chapter 1 Questions
★ 16 pages
★ Print and Digital
★ Detailed Answer Key included
This resource includes:
★ 1 Inference-Based Question "combo" Worksheet (contains all 5 questions together)
★ 5 Inference-based Question Worksheets (on a separate worksheet)
★ 5 Bulletin Board Task Display Pages (for each question worksheet)
★ 1 Scoring Rubric
★ 1 Blank Worksheet (for you to generate your own question!)
★ ANSWER KEY (very detailed!)
This resource focuses on CHAPTER 1 of We Beat The Street and features 5 inference-based questions that require students to demonstrate inferential thinking and a deep analysis of the chapter - beyond literal comprehension. Each inference-based question can be treated as an extended response where students must make inferences and support their responses, ideas, and/or analysis with evidence from the text.
► There is a "combo" worksheet, which includes all five questions on two pages. There are also 5 separate worksheets that include the same questions on a different worksheet. This allows for more extensive responses. You can have students either complete all five inference-based questions on the "combo" worksheet all at once OR you can have students complete each of the questions at different times: for classwork, independent practice, homework, or formative assessment - your choice! You can even give students different questions depending on their levels - excellent for differentiation.
► I also included a blank worksheet for you to generate your own question and students write it in the box!
► A detailed ANSWER KEY for the questions have been included. The ideas and evidence in the Answer Keys are accompanied by page numbers to help you facilitate discussion more smoothly and navigate to important ideas and events without looking for the information in the book. The Answer Keys are so comprehensive that you can even develop additional questions that will encourage students to engage in productive classroom talk!
► A 2-Point rubric is included for scoring with a section for comments and feedback at the bottom. Finally, there are five visually appealing Bulletin Board Task Display Pages to display with student work. The Bulletin Board Task Display Pages are personalized for each question worksheet! You have everything you need to score these assignments and display on bulletin boards immediately upon completion. It's a great way to showcase student work!
► This resource is also included in Google Slides! Text boxes have already been created to make it easier for you and your students! Each slide includes two instruction solution tabs for when students accidentally delete text boxes and when they want to zoom in (to enlarge worksheets).
