Self-control, also known as Self-Regulation, is about appropriately managing your thoughts, feelings, and impulses. Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage your behavior, reactions, and emotions to things that happen around you. It starts with being consistently mindful of yourself and others.

Self-control (or self-regulation) is an important executive functioning life skill that students need to develop in order to help them:

regulate reactions to strong emotions like frustration, excitement, anger and embarrassment

calm down after something exciting or upsetting happens

control impulses

react and behave in ways that help them get along with other people

✅ This resource features 20 relevant Self-Control Scenarios followed by a question to get students to think about how they can manage their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in these challenging situations. They are asked to explain how they would appropriately handle such situations.

✅ These fun, real-life Self-Control Scenarios allow students to discuss a variety of situations and brainstorm effective solutions to otherwise difficult situations. It's a great opportunity for students to reflect about their own behaviors and emotions in different social situations and consider strategies they can use to help them manage their emotions and respond appropriately. How/When To Use the Scenario Task Cards

Role-Playing: Students can collaborate in pairs or groups to act out a variety of scenarios and demonstrate appropriate responses. Role-playing activities can also be used to demonstrate how to appropriately handle or navigate difficult situations associated with anger and self-control. Students can practice and learn the variety of ways they can handle situations that test their ability to control their actions and behaviors. This activity can ultimately improve confidence, communication, and assertiveness skills.

Icebreaker: This can be a great way to start a meeting, training session, or team-building activity. It’s also a great way to get students to get to know each other and buy into the purpose of an upcoming activity or lesson.

Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes then perform the skits for the class.

Writing Response: Students can be given a scenario to read and then write their responses. Students can switch papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these real-life scenarios/ situations. They can evaluate whether or not their approaches to solving problems (despite feelings of anger, frustration, betrayal, etc.) is appropriate or inappropriate and offer other possible solutions and/or suggestions on how to best handle difficult situations and cope with these emotions.

Discussion: Students can discuss the Scenario Task Cards in groups or whole class. They can discuss things like "What can you do to control your emotions, behavior, actions, etc.", "What healthy coping skills can you use to calm down in situations that make you angry?", etc.

Many of our students with learning and attention issues have difficulty reading body language. Failure to pick up on non-verbal signals, including body language and gestures, can make it hard for students or children to navigate all sorts of social situations. Body language and gestures convey messages, meaning, and important information beyond what is said. This resource is intended to help students "read" body language and navigate social situations successfully. It is also intended to provide students with opportunities to practice social skills by reading and responding to people’s body languages and gestures in an appropriate, positive manner.

▶️ 12 Scenario Task Cards

The Scenario Task Cards contain highly relevant scenarios related to body language. Students are asked what the person's body language is communicating and what it indicates the person might be feeling.

There are 12 Scenario Task Cards that come in FOUR different variations:

Set #1: Brown Task Cards with Questions

Set #2: Brown Task Cards without Questions

Set #3: B&W Task Cards with Questions

Set #4: B&W Task Cards without Questions

▶️ 20 Picture Task Cards

  • The Picture Task Cards contain highly relevant pictures of people using body language to communicate meaning and feelings. The body languages of the people in the task cards portray body gestures that students are familiar with and that they often see all around them in a variety of real-life social settings and situations. Students are asked what the person's body language is communicating, and what it indicates the person might be feeling.

There are 20 Picture Task Cards that come in 4 variations:

Set #1: Brown Task Cards with Questions

Set #2: Brown Task Cards without Questions

Set #3: B&W Task Cards with Questions

Set #4: B&W Task Cards without Questions

▶️ SCENARIO WORKSHEETS (Print and Digital)

12 Scenario Worksheets that come in 3 variations totaling 36 worksheets. ANSWER KEYS are included to help facilitate discussions. The scenarios in the worksheets are the same scenarios in the Task Cards.

Worksheet Variation #1: Contains three questions about what a person's body language is communicating, what it indicates he or she might be feeling, and how you can best respond to the person in that situation. (This is a perfect opportunity for your students to practice social skills and empathy!)

Worksheet Variation #2: Contains two questions about what would be an appropriate response in the situation presented, and what would be an inappropriate response in the situation presented. (Another great opportunity for your students to practice social skills and empathy!)

Worksheet Variation #3: Contains the same scenarios with a blank space for you to generate your own question and students write it on the line and answer it.

▶️ PICTURE WORKSHEETS (Print and Digital)

20 Picture Worksheets that come in 2 variations (totaling 40 worksheets). There are 20 worksheets that contain the same pictures in the Picture Task Cards.

Picture Worksheet Variation #1: Contains two questions about the message the person’s body language is sending, and how the person is feeling. In this worksheet, students have to provide evidence to support their answer about how the person in the picture might be feeling.

Picture Worksheet Variation #2: A blank space is provided for you to generate your own question and students write it on the line and answer it.

This resource provides a perfect opportunity for your students to understand social cues, interpret body language, practice social skills, and make inferences. This resource features real life scenarios and highly relevant photographs of people. Students with autism spectrum disorders often have the most difficult time with these skills and can benefit greatly from the visuals.

SUGGESTIONS FOR USE:

How/When To Use Scenario Task Cards

  • Role-Playing: Students can collaborate in pairs or groups to act out a variety of scenarios and demonstrate appropriate responses. Role-playing activities can also be used to show how "response" skills are used improperly and then asking the 'audience' to help reenact properly. This activity can ultimately improve confidence, communication, and assertiveness skills and further help students understand the difference between appropriate and inappropriate responses to people's body language and gestures.
  • Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes related to body language then perform the skit for the class.
  • Writing Response: Students can be given a scenario to read and then write their responses. Students can switch papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these real-life scenarios.
  • Discussion: Students can discuss the Body Language / Non-verbal Communication Scenario Task Cards in groups or whole class. They can discuss things like “What would you do?”, “Why would you do that?”, and “What are some other options you could consider?”

*********************************

❌ Lesson plans are not included. This product can be used in addition to your own lesson plans and in such a way that best meets the needs of your students.

It's important to think before you speak, especially in social situations. Many times, people, including students and adults, react quickly without really considering the situation. When you respond without taking a moment to think about different aspects of the situation and how others might feel, it can lead to problems. Taking the time to think before responding helps improve relationships, allows for better self-expression, and makes it easier to find solutions to problems.

► This resource features 24 highly relevant scenarios that revolve around social conflicts. Students are prompted to consider various aspects such as alternate perspectives, people's motives, intentions, and feelings before providing a response. After this reflection, they are asked to articulate how they would react in a manner that is both appropriate and respectful.

▶️ 24 Task Cards (COLORED and B&W)

✅ There are 24 Scenario Task Cards, each featuring a single scenario followed by a corresponding question:

What should you consider in this situation, and what would be an appropriate response?

✅ The Scenario Task Cards are versatile and can be incorporated into various settings, including larger lessons, guided small groups, whole-class discussions, partner discussions before sharing with the entire group, or one-on-one sessions with a teacher, guidance counselor, or parent/guardian. Both Task Card variations (Color | B&W) feature identical scenarios.

✅ You can print the Task Cards out on gloss paper or regular paper and laminate. You may also organize them in a binder ring.

▶️ 24 Writing Response Worksheets

✅ This resource also comprises 24 Writing Response Worksheets (with lines), each featuring a scenario accompanied by a corresponding writing prompt:

Read the situation and think about what you should consider before responding. Then, write some things you can say and do in response. (The worksheets include the same scenarios in the Task Cards.)

✅ These worksheets are great for “Quick Writes,” Do Now activities, Note-Taking/Reflection periods, Formative Assessments, or can simply be used as part of a larger lesson or discussion! They include breath-taking borders, fonts, and clip arts by other contributing artists.

✅ Also included is a blank Activity Worksheet for you to generate your own scenario and students write it down.

✅ Includes Print and Digital versions

▶️ 24 Organizer Worksheets and Sample Responses

✅ These worksheets include the same directions in the writing response worksheets, but are divided into organizer sections where students are asked to read a scenario and:

  • List what they should consider before responding.
  • List things they can SAY in response (after thoughtful consideration of the situation).
  • List things they can DO in response (after thoughtful consideration of the situation).

✅ Comprehensive Sample Responses for EACH of these worksheets are included, offering an additional adult perspective on how to address these questions.

✅ Includes Print and Digital versions

▶️ LIST of Scenarios
Additionally, a 3-page LIST OF SCENARIOS is provided, offering teachers easier access to read and select scenarios for use. It serves as a concise overview page, summarizing the scenarios listed in the Task Cards.

*******************************
How/When To Use the Scenario Task Cards

Role-Playing: Students have the opportunity to engage in collaborative role-playing exercises, either in pairs or groups, where they act out diverse scenarios to showcase appropriate responses. These activities serve as effective tools for demonstrating the adept handling of challenging situations, emphasizing the importance of considering others' perspectives and feelings. Ultimately, participating in these role-playing exercises can enhance confidence, communication, and assertiveness skills.

Icebreaker: This can be a great way to start a meeting, training session, or team-building activity. It’s also a great way to get students to get to know each other and buy into the purpose of an upcoming activity or lesson.

Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes then perform the skits for the class and demonstrate appropriate responses.

Writing Response: Students can be given a scenario to read and then write their responses. Students can switch papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these real-life scenarios/ situations.

Discussion: Students have the opportunity to engage in group or whole-class discussions centered around the Scenario Task Cards. Topics of discussion may include considerations such as, "What factors should we take into account about the situation and other people's perspectives and feelings before responding?" Participants can explore strategies for respectfully handling the given scenarios, pondering questions like "Why choose that approach?" and "What alternative options might one consider in terms of actions or responses in these situations?"

It’s so important that we learn how to respond to others in an effective way. As educators, we often see our students struggle to communicate with empathy and respect. Being able to have constructive conversations is an essential skill for our students to learn.

This resource equips teachers with practical suggestions for a positive approach to communication. Too often we see our students wrestling with ways to talk to each other that are socially sensitive. Especially in times of conflict, we want to provide our students with productive ways to verbalize their thoughts and feelings. It’s critical that our students learn to listen to each other while also feeling heard.

Responding to others with constructive words is a beneficial skill for our middle and high school students to learn. This ability to talk to others kindly is a life skill they will need in their daily life not just as kids and teenagers but into the future too.

This resource features a total of 10 different communication scenarios with an example of a "rude" or "mean" response statement. (Statements also have negative tones). Students must read the scenarios (or situations) and the "rude/mean/negative-toned" response statements provided TO FRIENDS and:

  • explain what effects those particular responses can have on the person and/or outcome of the situations.

Social cues encompass the signals individuals convey through their body language and expressions. When young people miss these cues, they risk misunderstanding people and situations. Recognizing and interpreting social cues effectively can enhance students' confidence, prepare them for various interactions, help them understand their surroundings, respond appropriately to situations, navigate uncomfortable scenarios, and, crucially, prevent potential conflicts.

✅ This resource features 40 real-life, highly relevant scenarios, offering students ample opportunities to practice interpreting social cues, making inferences, and responding appropriately.

This resource features 68 Moral and Ethical Dilemma Scenarios that they can relate to. These scenarios can help students recognize situations that involve moral and ethical issues and practice becoming better decision-makers. These scenarios also provide students the opportunity to discuss what they would do in different moral/ethical situations. Introducing ethical/moral dilemmas in the classroom can open up opportunities not only for debate and critical thinking, but also for personal growth, empathy for other viewpoints, and self-reflection.

These scenarios present individuals with moral and ethical dilemmas that require careful consideration. These scenarios challenge students to examine their values, principles, and decision-making processes. For example, a scenario might ask a student to choose between two morally conflicting options and reflect on their choice.

How/When To Use the Scenario Task Cards

  • Role-Playing: The scenarios provide students with opportunities to discuss, understand, and role play the variety of effective ways they can respond to difficult situations and resolve moral and ethical dilemmas. You can also have each pair read their scenario and then role-play the scenario in front of the class, trying to find a positive resolution to the situation. Each pair also watches another pair’s role-play as commenters: they have the power to freeze the action of the role-play and make comments and suggestions to the role-players to guide them towards a positive resolution. You can use the Task Cards with no questions to generate your OWN questions and activities!
  • Icebreaker: This can be a great way to start a meeting, training session, or team-building activity. It’s also a great way to get students to get to know each other and how they would deal with certain situations. It may assist you in getting them to buy into the purpose of an upcoming activity or lesson.
  • Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes then perform the skits for the class.
  • Writing Response: Students can be given a scenario to read and then write their responses: Consider your options in this situation. What outcomes might each option lead to? What would you decide to do and why? Students can swap papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these real-life scenarios/situations.
  • Discussion: Students can discuss the Scenario Task Cards in groups or whole class.
