Word Meaning with Nonsense Words

Why teach word meaning through nonsense words (context clues only)?

• Students must use critical thinking to solve
• Students must read the whole passage for context clues

• They can't find the answer except through problem solving.

You came to the right place! I have been teaching for 5+ years, I have my Master's in Education with a focus on Literacy and I didn't know where to start.

So, I went back to everything I learned in my graduate program and re-read everything I could find.

I wrote & designed a student-engaging template to help students in my classroom to deeply internalize a word. I gathered key word lists when I didn't have a word from our daily reading, and thought about how to teach vocabulary so my love of etymology and words could be shared with my 10th graders. These are fake Instagram posts that have pictures of activities. One post shows the activity happening in the present and the other post shows the activity either finished or happening in the past. The teacher will need to cut out the Instagram posts and the text boxes. Then the students will need to place the descriptions (inside the text boxes) with the correct Instagram post. The majority of the practice with this activity is focused on past tense, but there is also present and future tense.

**An extension for the activity is to have the students underline and identify the verb that shows the tense of the sentence.**

This can be used for multiple grade levels and would be a great support activity for upper elementary and middle school students who need practice with verb tenses (especially past tense).

✬This assignment is meant to help students not only practice their Spelling words but also to help them acquire a larger vocabulary. There is space for fifteen Spelling words. However, the second page can always be printed again to add additional words as needed. Students should write their Spelling word, the definition, and use it in a sentence.

Tips and advice:

✬It is completely understandable that there might not always be time to incorporate an assignment like this into the students’ regime of homework. Because of that, I have also used this if my students failed their Spelling tests. In my classroom, if they received less than an 80% on a Spelling test, I printed this out on Monday and stapled their test to it. (Others will draw the line at different percentages. I had ESL students who needed the vocab practice.) It was due on Friday. They then had to do this activity with any of the words that they spelled wrong. I would grade this assignment based on correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and correct definitions. Once done, I averaged the grade from this assignment with their test score and entered the new, higher grade into my gradebook. For the ESL students in my class, this assignment was very helpful in broadening their vocabulary.
