The passages are perfect for grades 4, 5, and 6, but can also be used for higher or lower grades depending on the students’ reading level and background knowledge.

This bundle contains several reading comprehension passages that cover some of the most important events and figures of the civil rights movement.

The passages included in this bundle are:

  • Rosa Parks and The Montgomery Bus Boycott: Learn about the courageous act of defiance by Rosa Parks that sparked a year-long boycott of the segregated bus system in Montgomery, Alabama, and that inspired a nationwide movement for racial equality.
  • The March on Washington: The passage is about the historic demonstration that brought more than 200,000 people to the nation’s capital to demand civil and economic rights for African Americans, and that featured the famous “I Have a Dream” speech by Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Brown v. Board of Education: Help the students learn about the landmark Supreme Court case that declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional, and that paved the way for the integration of education in America.

Each passage is followed by a set of questions that test the students’ comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. In addition, each passage comes with an answer key that provides detailed explanations for each question.

Students can read this on their own in class, as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key.

This 20 page DBQ and Primary Source Analysis activity gives students a chance to delve deeper into women’s experiences and contributions during the Civil War. In addition, there are two Document-Based Questions (DBQs) available for students to complete.

Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. Primary sources include speeches, essays, a declaration and cartoons. Each page of primary sources includes questions. United States Constitution Scavenger Hunt (No Prep!)

By Miss Yous Clues and Resources

This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that analyzes the creation of the Constitution, challenges in ratifying it between the colonies, the struggles of the Articles of Confederation and key players in this whole process which is studied in the 7th grade curriculum under the following standards:

  • 7.4 The newly independent states faced political and economic struggles under the Articles of Confederation. These challenges resulted in a Constitutional Convention, a debate over ratification, and the eventual adoption of the Bill of Rights.
  • 7.4a Throughout the American Revolution, the colonies struggled to address their differing social, political, and economic interests and to establish unity. The Articles of Confederation created a form of government that loosely united the states, but allowed states to maintain a large degree of sovereignty.
  • 7.4b The lack of a strong central government under the Articles of Confederation presented numerous challenges. A convention was held to revise the Articles, the result of which was the Constitution. The Constitution established a democratic republic with a stronger central government.
  • 7.4c Advocates for and against a strong central government were divided on issues of States rights, role/limits of federal power, and guarantees of individual freedoms. Compromises were needed between the states in order to ratify the Constitution.

This resource begins by challenging students with a mission, complete the tasks to solve the mystery word and four digit code to help the founding fathers ratify the Constitution; failure will result in the colonies remaining under the weak Articles of Confederation. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #8. Students MUST record which task card they found the answer on in their answer sheet under the “FOUND CARDS #” column. That column will be used at the end for the 4 digit lock code. They will follow the clues to find the correct 4 digit code. Once they have completed the scavenger hunt they will receive a half sheet of paper stating that they have helped the founding fathers ratify the Constitution!

This activity would be a great review before assessments, as a center activity, a group activity, etc. Students will be engaged with the learning while having a fun time trying to solve all of the clues!

This lesson is based on my own personal experience as a participant on a USA-Mexico border tour project organized by Rethinking Schools & Global Exchange that provided first-hand experience and knowledge concerning the effects of U.S. foreign policy, such as NAFTA, on the lives of ordinary people who reside in the Tijuana area. Students will be prompted to delve far beyond the mainstream explanation that answers the critical question as to why people cross the U.S.-Mexico border. This lesson will have students examine the broader context, and underlying factors to this question, which intimately tie itself to Mexico's agricultural economy. Students will identify the causal puzzle pieces, and then create a ‘LOOP’ (web) diagram that will serve to demonstrate their understandings of how these underlying causes interconnect with one another. Materials: • One 50 Slide PowerPoint • Grading Rubrics • Student Loop Diagram Examples • Printable Handouts: 1) Handout #1- Power-Point Guided Notes 2) Handout #2- The U.S.-Mexico Border Puzzle Pieces If you liked this lesson see the 'BUNDLE unit lesson' here: NAFTA & the U.S. Mexico Border Bundle I OFTEN PROVIDE FREEBIES TO MY FOLLOWERS AND ALL NEW PRODUCTS DEBUT AT 20% OFF: • Look for the green star next to my store logo at the top right corner of this page and click it to become a follower. The U.S. Home Front during WWII: DBQ's and Primary Sources *APUSH*

By Christa Nonnemaker

This 23-page resource with 20 primary sources plus three DBQ prompts gives students a chance to delve deeper into the challenges, obstacles and opportunities on the home front during World War II. The first two pages include Lesson Planning strategies, an Overview, notes on Primary Sources, and a list of Primary Sources.

Here’s a chance for students to read documents that shed light on how the war gave certain groups of people, like women and African-Americans, greater opportunities than they'd ever had before. At the same time, some people suffered greatly, such as the Japanese-Americans due to their internment in camps. All Americans needed to make sacrifices, however, in most areas. The primary sources show the extent to which war affected life in a variety of ways.

Assign just one, a few or all of the sources depending on time constraints and student interest.

Primary sources include interviews, photos, posters, newspaper articles, reports and other documents. Each page of primary sources includes questions at the end in order for students to analyze perspectives, consider key ideas and identify bias.

Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source.

Three DBQ prompts are included at the end with instructions on how to create a response to the prompt. An Answer Key to all the questions and the DBQ prompts are available at the end of the packet.

This is excellent practice for all high school students, particularly Honors and AP students, but all students will find these resources engaging.

This is also available as a digital resource through Easel so students may complete it online.

If you like World War II historical fiction, I have written a novel called Hearts at War featuring a Nisei soldier who served in the Military Intelligence Service as a translator and a woman who served in the Women Army Corps, both of whom were assigned to the Pacific theater. In writing this book, I wanted to bring an unknown aspect of history to light. Available on Amazon or Kindle. Interracial Romance/Young Adult/Adult Fiction. I appreciate any reviews!

Thank you!
