Introduction to Abacus Math, Counting numbers 1 to 3 abacus worksheets

By Lynette Yung

One to One Correspondence Activity introduces the abacus to your students. They will learn to count from 1 to 3 and values of the abacus beads. The students will learn number 1, 2, and 3 activities include:

  • cut and paste with introducing positional words
  • coloring
  • I Spy Abacus
  • color by number
  • video with numbers

Don't forget to download "Introduction to Abacus PART 2" which will have numbers from 4 to 10 to continue with learning the abacus.

Here is a demonstration video: https://youtu.be/dZwfARAY6g0

Do you have an Abacus sitting in your classroom somewhere? The abacus is a wonderful manipulative that can grow with your students. Abacus builds strong number sense and subitizing.

CRA Approach for learning math.

Concrete. The “doing” stage uses concrete objects to model problems. In the concrete stage, the abacus can introduce mathematical concepts, like counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Representational. The “seeing” stage uses representations of the objects to model problems. In this stage, my worksheets involve drawing pictures while relating to the abacus.

Abstract. The “symbolic” stage uses abstract symbols such as numbers and operation symbols (+, × ,÷, –) to indicate addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.

Follow me for more abacus worksheets, so you can incorporate abacus with learning math.

Abacus Maze-Numbers 0 to 4 Mazes

By Lynette Yung

Counting and coloring Numbers 0 to 4 on the abacus in a maze. These number sense mazes are perfect for pre-k and kindergarten to gain awareness of the numbers 0–4. Students practice number recognition on both the numeral and the abacus. This also encourages students to subitize and use number sense.

There are 4 different mazes, and answer key.

What is subitizing?

Subitizing is the ability to quickly recognize the number of objects in a small group without counting them individually. It's essentially the ability to perceive the quantity of objects at a glance. This skill is particularly evident with small numbers, typically up to around 5 or 6 objects in this activity, 0–4.

What is number sense?

Number sense is the ability to identify and conceptualize numbers, like 1, 2, 3. The activity helps compare the abacus beads with the numerals.

20 Counting Puzzle Strips

By LittleStreams

This collection of number puzzle strips is a great way for students to demonstrate their ability to count. A large image is cut into strips. When the strips are placed in order, a picture is revealed.

We have supplied two versions of each puzzle. One version in landscape that has the numbers from left to right, mimicking the number line. The other in portrait with numbers ascending from bottom to top, preparing students for later work with graphs in the y axis.

We recommend you pre cut the strips to hand to students, and also laminate the strips for longevity if you wish. For an extra challenge, why not combine a few of the puzzles, so students not only have to put the numbers in the correct order, but decide which pieces should go with which puzzle.

There are 10 puzzles in total, covering themes of every day scenes, under the sea and outer space, as well as celeration themes including Birthday, Christmas, and Fireworks!
