Holiday Toy Trends Mini Research Unit
By Three Little Homeschoolers
Every year there's that ONE holiday toy that captures the hearts of kids and sends parents off to the store to grab the last one. This mini unit covers the history of Christmas toys through four decades (some of which you will remember!). The unit is divided into three parts and relies heavily on student research. The parts can be done at your own pace over the course of a week or over several weeks.
Part One
-Includes two reading passages, one about the history of holiday gift giving and one about the rise of the toy industry.
-Research Project: Students are given four worksheets, one for each of the decades (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s), and they must research toy trends for each decade
Part Two
-All of part two is in the included PowerPoint. This covers holiday advertising, starting with the early days of ads, through the department store catalog, and into modern television commercials.
-There are three links to toy commercials from the 70s, 80s, and 90s to watch with students
Part Three
-In part three, students will conduct an interview with an older friend or family member about their own holiday toy memories
-Final Project: Students pick one of three final projects to complete. Each project relates back to a different part of the unit.
This unit is geared towards a classroom, but is easily adapted to a homeschooler...in fact, I originally created it for mine! Every research activity is done solo and the PowerPoint can easily be used just for one or a handful of kiddos. This is also easily adaptable, in case you want to change anything for your students, but is no-prep, ready to go, as it is!

Design & Build a City - Project Based Technology & Engineering

In this project based learning unit, middle school/early high school students learn about city planning and architecture as they research and design their own city. In addition to using Internet search skills, they'll utilize CAD skills using Sketchup (free download) and finally build the city from chipboard and other recyclables and name their final creation. .

Design and Build a Hotel - STEM, Engineering & Math Group Project

This project lets students learn about the engineering and design of hotels as they research and design one with their team. After introducing the lesson with a short video (link included in resources), students complete a math project about hotel design that focuses on perimeter, area, square footage, measurement and scale skills (formulas are included). Next, they work with their team to research information about the design and engineering involved in hotel construction and plan the design, materials and budget for the hotel they will design. Then, they work individually to create their own hotel to scale in Sketchup (a free CAD software program, download available at: https://www.sketchup.com/download ) and after completion, determine which of the team’s designs they will actually construct. Finally, they build a model of their hotel using recycled materials, following the Engineering Design Process with their team. After completing their hotel, students present their project to the class and explain their design choices. Finally, students reflect on and summarize their learning with short answers to questions about the experience and what they learned.
This lesson was created for 7th and 8th grade, but could also be used successfully in upper elementary grades or high school as well.

History of Computers - Group Research & Presentation Project

In this lesson, students learn more about the history of the computer. The lesson starts with a Microsoft PowerPoint whole class presentation that gives an overview of computer history from the 1950’s through current times. Next, students work in small groups to research history information from an assigned decade and then to create a presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint (or Google Slides) to share with the class. Students take notes during the presentations and then culminate their learning with a short quiz over the material. A study sheet is provided to cover the material from each decade that will be tested to give students an opportunity to review the information (or to assist in the case of absences or presentations that are incomplete). This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary grades or high school as well. 7 Wonders of the World - Research ~ Engineering Design ~ Construction Project

In this lesson, students learn more about both the classic Seven Wonders of the World and the “new” Seven Wonders project as they research the history, design and engineering of the wonders. The lesson starts with a whole class Microsoft PowerPoint presentation (editable) to view the Wonders and start discussion. Next, students choose one of the classic and one of the “new” Wonders to research further and create a presentation with that information (using Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides). Optionally, these may be presented to the class. In the next part of the assignment, they design an “Eighth Wonder” of their own (to scale) based on what they learned, using Sketchup (a free CAD program that can be downloaded at: https://www.sketchup.com/ or used as an online tool). After completing the drawing, students build a model of their Wonder to scale using chipboard, cardboard or other materials. The building activity can be done as a team/small group activity if you prefer. Finally, students answer questions to reflect on their learning for this unit. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary grades or high school as well. Mobile Apps - Research and Design Your Own App | Distance Learning

Students love their phones and all the apps that are available for them! This lesson lets students research some of the most popular apps and learn more about the software engineers who created them, and then create an app of their own. A Microsoft PowerPoint presentation starts the lesson as students learn about how apps are designed. Next, students work individually, with a partner, or in small groups to research an assigned app and create a presentation in their choice of software (suggestions and web tutorials are included). Next, students present their findings to the class. Finally, students work together to create their own app, using App Inventor (free software from MIT). Links to teacher instructions for App Inventor set up (provided by MIT) are included in the provided teacher resources below. All files are fully editable, allowing the teacher to customize the lessons. Additional resources and extension lesson ideas include free sites for students to create their own mobile app.

Exploring Careers: Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources Career Cluster

This career unit gives students an introduction to the agriculture, food and natural resources career cluster and what a career in this field would be like. This is perfect for a career, technology, CTE or business class.
The included PowerPoint presentation can be used by the teacher for whole class instruction, or provided to the students electronically (or as a printout) for them to review individually. Students use close reading skills with a short informational passage to learn about the career field and answer questions to use critical thinking skills and demonstrate their understanding. Two different puzzles are included to learn different jobs in the career and to reinforce vocabulary skills. A technology based research project is included to allow students to use critical thinking and creativity to further explore the career field. Additionally, a group project that can be completed without student computer access (by the teacher printing out the linked information) or providing access to a computer for each group to research is provided to simulate the career and allow students to utilize critical thinking skills and teamwork. Finally, a short reflection questionnaire gives students the opportunity to reflect and analyze their learning as they determine if this career field is of interest to them.
The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be used with high school students. The teacher can choose to use some or all of the provided lesson options included in this resource.
This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.

Digital Citizenship & Social Media | Distance Learning

In this lesson, students learn more about how social media works and appropriate and responsible use of the medium. Included with the lesson is a fun, quick, WebQuest to use as a warmup to the lesson to help students improve their Internet search skills. Next, students work in small teams to research one area of digital citizenship and create a poster in Microsoft Word or Powerpoint to showcase their learning. Finally, students look at their own digital footprint and create a graphic that shows how they want to be perceived online in the future. These project are great to print and display in the classroom or hallway!
This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary grades or high school as well.

The Physics of Amusement Park Rides

Project based learning fun for middle school and early high school students that focuses on the physics behind amusement park rides.
Students start the unit by researching information about how Newton's Laws of Physics impact the amusement park rides they love. They utilize an online simulation to see how changes in their design impact the fun and safety of the rides. Next, they research the history of roller coasters and showcase their work using PowerPoint or a Web 2.0 presentation tool. Finally, they design their own amusement park using Sketchup (or other CAD software) and finally put it all together in a presentation to share with their dream amusement park with the class, who evaluates their design.
Materials and lessons include:

2. Amusement Park Physics Research (Questions, on-line simulation, vocabulary) – includes student worksheet and grading key
3. History of Roller Coasters Project (PowerPoint, Web 2.0, research)
4. Creating an Amusement Park in Sketchup Project (research, CAD design, PowerPoint summary and presentation to the class).
5. Student Presentation Evaluation Sheet
I've used this lesson with 8th graders in a high school credit Engineering class for several years and it is one of their favorites. I hope you students enjoy it!

An individual project to research information about a subtopic regarding the history and development of transportation using Microsoft PowerPoint (or Google Slides) offers students an opportunity for a better understanding of the evolution of this career. A group project is provided to simulate the career of an aerospace engineer as students design a plane with their team, allowing students to utilize critical thinking skills and teamwork. Finally, a short reflection questionnaire gives students the opportunity to reflect and analyze their learning as they determine if this career field is of interest to them.
