Think Before You Speak - An Interactive Activity

This "Think Before You Speak" activity puts a focus on taking time to reflect and think before speaking to others. In this interactive activity, students are put into teams, where they are helping one another guess a specific word while also avoiding the guess of another word. Students must focus and carefully select the words in which they are using to be helpful - a social skill that we all utilize daily (even if we do not realize it!) This activity is a great resource to bring this skill to life and take time to reflect and connect - while having a little fun in doing so! As our students are completing written assignments, using quotation marks in dialogue can be confusing. Students need to remember to use a comma before or after a quote, a capital letter when a statement is made by a character, descriptive tags, and quotation marks. Students can get easily confused when learning how to show dialogue between characters when they are having a conversation. In this product, students review why quotation marks are used in dialogue, complete sentences to show dialogue (adding in commas and quotation marks), make corrections to sentences by adding missing commas or quotation marks, make up sentences to show dialogue based on picture scenarios, make up sentences without picture scenarios that include dialogue, and students also have the opportunity to write a short story that include at least 5 communication exchanges between characters that include capitalization, commas, quotation marks, and descriptive tags.

As students are learning the ULTIMATE 260 - 4th grade sight words in this product, they will be provided with each word, an example of the word used in a sentence, and the opportunity to make up a sentence themselves using the word. I find that with my students who are Deaf/hard of hearing/ELL, when they make up sentences using each newly learned sight word, it helps them to remember how to spell the word, the meaning, and how it is used. My students love booklets of any kind that they can refer back to. Once they have come up with their sentences, they can include pictures that they print and cut out, draw pictures freehand, or find pictures in a magazine that they can add to each page of the 4th grade sight word booklet that matches each sentence they come up with. This gives students the opportunity to connect what they are learning about in the classroom with their own personal interests. This booklet is rather lengthy, so instead of printing it out, you can display it for the entire class to see as well. This booklet is perfect for students that are on grade level as well as students who require instructional information to be adapted.

In this product, The Man Who Named the Clouds is read and reviewed. Students will review/learn facts and vocabulary about what a forecast and meteorologist are, what a biography is and if it is comparable to a fiction or nonfiction text, review vocabulary words and their pictures that are present in the text, different kinds of clouds, learn about the author and the illustrator, and students will write a weather journal. Students will answer comprehension questions using this product. They can complete these questions individually, in a small group, or with support. There are several pages of comprehension questions in this packet that differ from the questions asked in the teacher edition. Selection vocabulary words, their meanings, and an example of them used in a sentence is included in this product. Students will have the opportunity to make up their own sentences for each selection vocabulary word as well. The questions from the text are adapted in this packet to meet each of your student's needs. At the end of the packet, students will answer comprehension questions about the author and illustrator.

As students are learning the 41 - primer sight words in this product, they will be provided with each word, an example of the word used in a sentence, and the opportunity to make up a sentence themselves using the word. I find that with my students who are Deaf/hard of hearing/ELL, when they make up sentences using each newly learned sight word, it helps them to remember how to spell the word, the meaning, and how it is used. My students love booklets of any kind that they can refer back to. Once they have come up with their sentences, they can include pictures that they print and cut out, draw pictures freehand, or find pictures in a magazine that they can add to each page of the primer sight word booklet that matches each sentence they come up with. This gives students the opportunity to connect what they are learning about in the classroom with their own personal interests. This booklet is perfect for students that are on grade level as well as students who require instructional information to be adapted.

The book, Best Friends by Shannon Hale and Leuyen Pham is great for children ages 7 - 13 years old, as they can relate with Shannon, the friends she makes along the way, the friendships she struggles to maintain, the lack of self confidence she has and she becomes more confident along the way, learning that it is okay not to be friends with everyone, the importance of friendship and not following the crowd or what your friends want you to do, doing things that you want to do - being a leader instead of a follower, and how to handle stressful situations, anxiety, conflict, and bullying. Students will follow Shannon along as she figures out where to fit in while in 6th grade and gets ready for junior high school. The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and example sentences are presented in the packet. Students can also write vocabulary words in sentences. As the book is being read aloud, as students are reading the book or after the book has been read, students can answer the comprehension questions in this packet. An answer key is provided at the end of this product. Students can also answer comprehension questions towards the end of the packet as well that summarize the entire book.
