Less than $5 Art History Research (by date, oldest first)

In this lesson, students learn more about the history of graphic design. Students choose a time period in history from a provided list, research that era, and then choose the software they will use to showcase their research. Students can choose to create a presentation, a brochure, or a video using Web 2.0 tools such as Prezi, Adobe Spark, eMaze, Canva, etc. (free, no download needed) or by using Microsoft Office or Google Apps. A full list of software/technology options is listed in the student lesson instructions and includes links to tutorials. For classrooms with limited technology, this lesson can be completed with students working in pairs or small groups. The completed presentations can be shared with the rest of the class if the teacher chooses.

This short computer research WebQuest/Scavenger Hunt is a fun activity to lead into a variety of units in Technology, CTE, Architecture, Art or History. It is also a great quick activity to fill a day prior to starting a new lesson or to use with a substitute teacher.

The lesson includes student handouts, teacher resources, and a grading key for the teacher. In this lesson, students create fashions of their own using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Paint. Students can also use one of these free Web 2.0 tools: SketchPad (https://sketch.io/sketchpad/) or SumoPaint (https://www.sumopaint.com/home/#app) that do not require download. Two versions of the lesson are included: one is a shorter version to create just one fashion and the other is a longer version to create a fashion line (6-8 items) which are combined into a collage. Depending on the class and the amount of time available, the teacher can choose which version is most appropriate. Both versions include a writing and reflection component to the lesson, giving students the opportunity to consider how they made their design choices. Links to tutorials for the programs are also provided to assist students with their creations. A basic knowledge of Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop is helpful if those programs are being used. However, beginning students can incorporate tutorials with this lesson to successfully learn the program as they create their designs.

This is a biography writing unit about the famous Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo. The unit is ideal for 5th grade and 6th grade and has been split into four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each. The Google Slides activity is ideal for distance learning and perfect for students in 5th grade or 6th grade learning about Art History or for Women's History Month.

The first lesson is interactive and involves students reading facts, and then sorting and ordering these facts into paragraphs. In the second lesson the children need to use these facts to type four paragraphs. Then, in the third lesson they need to choose the most important facts and include these in an introduction; after this they need to answer several questions before typing up their conclusion. In the final lesson your class will need to check their draft paragraphs before typing up their work on to the template provided.

A class set of activities might take around 15-20 minutes to mark; the teacher can then send the students their marks automatically, which allows them to read back through their work. Nearly all answers are not automatically generated, but only require a small amount of work to assign points. This is because the aim is to get students writing answers and not to just have multiple choice options.

Please ensure when you download this resource into Google Drive that you are logged in to the gmail account where you wish to store the activity. In the past teachers have downloaded resources into their school account in error. Thanks :)

The first lesson is interactive and involves students cutting out facts, and then sorting these facts into paragraphs. In the second lesson the students need to use these facts to write four paragraphs. Then, in the third lesson children need to choose the most important facts and include these in an introduction; after this they need to answer several questions on a prompt sheet before writing up their conclusion. In the final lesson students need to check their draft paragraphs for mistakes before writing up their work on to a neat copy on the template provided.
