• Frighteningly Figurative Language: In the second task, students must identify the figurative language devices used in fun Halloween sentences. Shaded boxes in the correct answers form the second code.
• Halloween Fun Facts: In the third task, students will read 8 fun facts about Halloween and must identify the parts of speech of underlined words within the passages. When matched correctly, shaded boxes will reveal the third code.
• A Child's Nightmare: In the fourth task, students must perform a close reading of Robert Grave's famously chilling poem, A Child's Nightmare. The letters of the multiple choice questions about the poem will form the fourth code.... Cat! Cat! Cat!
• Frightful Fallen Phrase: In the final task, students must complete a fallen phrase that reveals a spooky poem. Once they bring that to you, they may escape the haunted house of horrors.

• Black Friday: In the third task, students must locate and correct homophones within a passage about the day after Thanksgiving.
• The OG Thanksgiving: In the fourth task, students must locate and correct present tense verbs within a past tense passage about the origins of Thanksgiving.
• Wise Words: In the final task, students must identify the parts of speech of words within a quote about being thankful in a matching game. Once complete, they must input all codes into a sentence to escape to Thanksgiving break!

This creative Dragons & Castles Scene was designed to be printed and displayed as examples while you teach. Use this PDF file to display these beautiful images one-by-one on a large screen. For this assignment, I asked students to brainstorm a dragons & castle drawing inside their sketchbook. Foreground, middle ground, and background were emphasized throughout the 4–5-day unit. I asked students to lightly redraw the composition onto watercolor paper. I asked students to paint the larger areas first and paint the dragon and details last. I hope you and your kiddos love this! • Comma Drama: In the first task, students must identify comma rules used in 6 celebrity quotes. When matched correctly on a mat puzzle, shaded boxes reveal the first code.
• Afri-cademy: In the second task, students must identify the parts of speech in words used in a non-fiction article about schools in Africa. Once complete, they must unscramble shaded boxes in the answers to reveal the code.
• Ah-Mazing: In the third task, students must solve a challenging word maze. Letters collected along the way form the third code.
• The Hard Way: In the fourth task, students must perform a close reading of The Hard Way by The Kinks. The letters of the multiple choice questions about the poem will form the fourth code.
• Pop Quiz!: In the final task, students must take information they gathered from the first four tasks and fill out a crossword puzzle. Once complete, they must unscramble the circled letters to reveal their final code to escape!
