French Listening and Reading Comprehension - Le Plus-Que-Parfait

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

Help your students improve their French with this practical listening and reading comprehension resource featuring le plus-que-parfait. A lot of passé composé is also included in the text.

The plus-que-parfait is embedded in the text, allowing students to practice making inferences, connections, and predictions. The resource includes ten comprehension questions that encourage careful reading or listening. This isn’t a beginner-level quiz, so it will challenge your students to think more deeply about the language.

* This resource is also available as a Google Form, a simple reading comprehension activity with multiple choice answers. The text and questions in the Google Form are the same as those in this comprehensive listening and reading resource.

What’s Included:

This resource has eight different parts that can be used for either reading or listening practice. Each part builds on the last, helping students understand and use the material effectively.

1. Reading Comprehension - Written Text: Start by having students read the text. You can let them read along while listening to the audio, helping them connect spoken and written French.

2. Listening Comprehension - Audio Recording: The text is read by François, a native speaker from Paris, at a normal pace. If students find it too fast at first, let them read along while listening, and then try listening without the text.

3. Listening Comprehension - Questions Audio Recording: After the text, students will hear questions read aloud, with a bell tone and a brief pause to give their answers. This helps them practice listening and responding in real time.

4. Listening Comprehension - Open-Ended Questions Worksheet: This worksheet allows students to write their answers to the spoken questions. For a more interactive experience, you can have them answer orally instead.

5. Reading Comprehension - Open-Ended Questions Worksheet: With the text in front of them, students answer questions in complete sentences, helping them to better understand and express their thoughts in French.

6. Reading Comprehension - Multiple Choice Questions Worksheet: This worksheet offers a multiple-choice format for students who might need a bit more support, making it easier to find the correct answers.

7. Cloze Activity - Fill in the Blanks: Students listen to the audio and fill in the missing words in the text. A word bank is provided, and you can use the original text as the answer key.

8. English Translation of Text + Multiple Choice Quiz Answer Key: An English translation of the text is included for reference, along with the answer key for the multiple-choice quiz. While the translation is helpful, the focus is on understanding the French text.

How to Use:

For best results, start with the reading activities so students become familiar with the text. After a few days or the following week, use the same material for listening practice. This will help reinforce what they’ve learned and improve their overall language skills.

This resource is a great way to help your students gain confidence in French!

French Conversation Lesson La Randonnée Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

Looking for a way to show your students how real daily French conversations flow? This comprehensive French lesson will have your students reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The theme of this lesson is la randonnée. They'll get lots of exposure to real spoken French, while working on the four skills we strive to include in every lesson.

Included:

⭐  Video in French and English

⭐  Audio in French only

⭐  Fill in the blank exercise

⭐  Transcript in French

⭐  Role play situation in English

⭐  Useful sentences + expressions

La Randonnée - Hiking in the mountains

  • You are out hiking along a trail in the mountains, and you lose your balance and fall down. You may have sprained your ankle, and you can’t walk. Fortunately, you have your phone with you! You decide it would be a good idea to call a friend for help and to see if he can come and pick you up.

In the video, students will listen and read along as a typical French dialogue unfolds during une randonnée in France.

As students listen to the conversation, listening comprehension will improve, and they will learn lots of new vocabulary words and expressions. This is really the way French people interact, though it may never have shown up in the textbook!

The video lasts approximately two minutes, and it is easy to pause so that everyone has a chance to study the text.

The speech is not too fast in this video, and all of the words are written on the screen in French and with English translations.

The grammar in this conversation is quite varied. However, French learners at any level can learn a lot and benefit from these conversations through context. Your students will find the English translations to be most helpful, and they will see how it is nearly impossible to give direct translations from French to English.

LESSON PLAN (as you explain it to students):

Step 1: Watch the video and read along as you listen to the conversation. When you don't understand a word, just look down at the English translation. Be sure to take notes! It's ok if you don't understand all of the grammar. Just try to pay close attention to how the sentences are put together and how we do it differently in English.

Step 2: Listen to the audio recording without looking at the words and translations on the video. Do you remember what the words mean? You can use this recording to practice and fine tune your listening skills

Step 3: Print out the fill in the blank exercise, and write in the missing words as you listen to the recording. An answer key is provided. Once you have done this a few times, I challenge you to get out a blank sheet of paper and try writing it all! Just have that pause button ready!

Step 4: Read over the role play situation with a partner. Study the page with helpful French sentences and expressions, and invent your own dialogue. You can use some of what you learned in the video in your conversation!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "My students loved using this for being able to help them have conversations in class. Great resource!"

Step 4: Read over the role play situation with a partner. Study the page with helpful French sentences and expressions, and invent your own dialogue. You can use some of what you learned in the video in your conversation!

French Conversation - L'Écran Cassé - Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

Looking for a way to show your students how real daily French conversations flow? This comprehensive French lesson will have your students reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The theme of this lesson is l'écran cassé. They'll get lots of exposure to real spoken French, while working on the four skills we strive to include in every lesson.

Included:

⭐  Video in French and English

⭐  Audio in French only

⭐  Fill in the blank exercise

⭐  Transcript in French

⭐  Role play situation in English

⭐  Useful sentences + expressions

L'écran cassé - Broken phone screen

  • You accidentally knocked your phone off of your bedside table last night. The screen is now shattered, and you need to have it repaired. When you go to the shop to have it repaired, you’re shocked at how expensive it will be! Will you go ahead and have it replaced anyway?

In the video, students will listen and read along as a typical French dialogue unfolds about un écran cassé in France.

French Conversation - Un Livre Oublié - Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

Looking for a way to show your students how real daily French conversations flow? This comprehensive French lesson will have your students reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The theme of this lesson is un livre oublié. They'll get lots of exposure to real spoken French, while working on the four skills we strive to include in every lesson.

⭐  Fill in the blank exercise

Livre oublié - Forgotten book

  • You’ve just spent a wonderful weekend at a friend’s house who lives about three hours away. When you finally got back home, you realized that you had forgotten the book you were reading on the terrace by the pool. It’s a really good one, and you decide to call your friend to ask her to mail it to you.

In the video, students will listen and read along as a typical French dialogue unfolds à la pâtisserie in France.

As students listen to the conversation, listening comprehension will improve, and they will learn lots of new vocabulary words and expressions. This is really the way French people interact, though it may never have shown up in the textbook!

French Imperative Lesson - With and Without Pronouns

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

French Imperative Lesson - With and Without Pronouns - Distance Learning

This is a lesson on how to make affirmative and negative commands in French both with and without pronouns. Students will learn that when they want to use double pronouns with the imperative, a few things change. This lesson guide is part of my comprehensive lesson on the imperative which includes the following resources that are available individually or as a money saving bundle. You may choose to teach this lesson yourself or use my free 41 minute video lesson if you have to be absent, want to use it for distance learning, or if you have a sub who doesn't speak French. I have created all of the following resources to make a comprehensive lesson plan that will help students practice and master the French imperative.

Teacher and Student Instructions:

STEP 1 ➯ Download the 9 page lesson and follow it closely while teaching how to use pronouns with the imperative. The lesson includes all of the essential rules beginning with the formation of the imperative and finishing with affirmative and negative commands with pronouns and double pronouns. To keep your students on their toes as you teach, move ahead to STEP 2 before distributing a copy of the lesson for them to add to their French folder.

STEP 2 ➯ Download the 9 page cours and distribute a copy to your students. They can use it to follow along and take notes while listening to you teach the lesson. There are spaces for them to fill in missing information that they will learn as you explain everything. Taking their own notes will help them retain the new information.

The following resources supplement this lesson and are part of the BUNDLE:

STEP 3 ➯ Recorded listening comprehension exercise - TU. Distribute the worksheet and students should be ready to write as they are led through an audio exercise. Students will hear a sentence being read beginning with _Tu veux...._ Listen carefully for the verb being used, and restate the sentence using the imperative. In this exercise, use the TU form every time, and no pronouns are used. Answer key included.

STEP 4 ➯ Recorded listening comprehension exercise - VOUS. Distribute the worksheet and students should be ready to write as they are led through an audio exercise. Students will hear a sentence being read beginning with _Vous voulez...._ Listen carefully for the verb being used, and restate the sentence using the imperative. In this exercise, use the VOUS form every time, and no pronouns are used. Answer key included.

STEP 5 ➯ Recorded listening comprehension exercise - NOUS. Distribute the worksheet and students should be ready to write as they are led through an audio exercise. Students will hear a sentence being read beginning with _Nous voulons...._ Listen carefully for the verb being used, and restate the sentence using the imperative. In this exercise, use the NOUS form every time, and no pronouns are used. Answer key included.

STEP 6 ➯ Written translation exercise - English to French - This exercise is meant to be simple and really focuses on what was taught in the lesson. A 5 minute audio file is included in which I walk students through the exercise and provide explanations just as you would in a classroom setting. This can be especially helpful if students are distance learning and need further help with the written work. You may wish to listen to my explanations and use some of my ideas when explaining the work yourself.

STEP 7 ➯ Written translation exercise - English to French - This exercise if for advanced learners or for those working at a higher level. This exercise will provide a challenge! It includes the imperative with pronouns and double pronouns with and without negation as well as other advanced level grammatical structures. A 9 minute audio file is included in which I walk students through the exercise and provide explanations just as you would in a classroom setting. This can be especially helpful if students are distance learning and need further help with the written work. You may wish to listen to my explanations and use some of my ideas when explaining the work yourself.

STEP 8 ➯ Written exercise - Reformulate French sentences and transform them into imperative commands. A 14 minute audio file is included in which I walk students through the exercise and provide explanations just as you would in a classroom setting. This can be especially helpful if students are distance learning and need further help with the written work. You may wish to listen to my explanations and use some of my ideas when explaining the work yourself.

STEP 9 ➯ Written exercise - Give commands using double pronouns. An 11 minute audio file is included in which I walk students through the exercise and provide explanations just as you would in a classroom setting. This can be especially helpful if students are distance learning and need further help with the written work. You may wish to listen to my explanations and use some of my ideas when explaining the work yourself.

STEP 10 ➯ 50 practice cards. This set of cards will help students truly master the French imperative with and without pronouns and negation. All cards are numbered, and there's a numbered answer key. I'm including 3 PDF versions to fit your teaching needs: 1 per page with answers shown on every other slide, 1 per page with no answers (refer to numbered key), 4 per page with no answers to print and cut out.

French Passé Composé With Être - Vandertramp - Listen, Read, Write in French

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

Need a creative way for students to learn which verbs use être as a helping verb in the passé composé? This engaging French lesson includes an original story with comprehensive listening, reading, and writing activities. After this lesson, your students will know and understand the 17 Dr. & Mrs. P. Vandertramp verbs. Here's a fun game that you can use to have your students practice conjugating these verbs.

EXPECT YOUR STUDENTS TO:

  • identify verbs that use être as a helping verb
  • strengthen listening comprehension at their level
  • remember to make agreement on past participles
  • learn new vocabulary by reading in French
  • be amused by this creative story

STEP 1:

  • Download, print, and distribute the Dr. & Mrs. P. Vandertramp chart.
  • 17 verbs that use être as a helping verb are written in French with English translations.
  • Past participles are included.

STEP 2:

  • Listen to an audio recording of an original story that uses all 17 verbs that use être in the passé composé to work on listening comprehension, and to see how much students can understand.
  • Download worksheet #1 and have students fill in the blanks (subjects, helping verbs, and past participles) as they listen to the story again.
  • Download, print, and distribute the full text (2 pages) and have students read along as they listen again.
  • Download worksheet #2 and have students fill in the blanks (helping verbs and past participles only - subjects and infinitives are included) NOT while listening to the story.

STEP 3:

  • Dictée - Listen to the audio recording and have students write everything they hear on the lines provided.
  • This is a good exercise in listening comprehension, and they'll need to pay close attention to number and gender to spell the past participles correctly.
  • Subject pronouns along with number and gender are included on the student response sheet.
  • As they listen, they will write helping verbs and past participles.

What some teachers are saying about this lesson:

"Amazing resource! This was so comprehensive and hit all the aspects of language I was assessing at the time. I'm going to use this for the rest of my career."

"Great breakdown of the PC and of Vandertramp verbs. The audio recording was a great exercise, the right "level" of challenge for my grade 9s."

Au cinéma - At the movies

  • You and a friend have been waiting for a particular movie to come out for months! The time has finally arrived, and you two go to the cinema, stand in line, purchase your tickets, buy some popcorn, and go into the movie theater to find the best seats.

In the video, students will listen and read along as a typical French dialogue unfolds au cinéma in France.

As students listen to the conversation, listening comprehension will improve, and they will learn lots of new vocabulary words and expressions. This is really the way French people interact, though it may never have shown up in the textbook!

French Conversation Lesson - l'Avion - Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

Looking for a way to show your students how real daily French conversations flow? This comprehensive French lesson will have your students reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The theme of this lesson is le billet d'avion. They'll get lots of exposure to real spoken French, while working on the four skills we strive to include in every lesson.

Included:

⭐  Video in French and English

⭐  Audio in French only

⭐  Fill in the blank exercise

⭐  Transcript in French

⭐  Role play situation in English

⭐  Useful sentences + expressions

Le billet d'avion - Airline ticket

  • You’ve just reserved and paid for a cheap flight online with Air France. Unfortunately, you notice that you have misspelled your name. This must be corrected or you’ll never be able to take your flight! You need to immediately call Air France and explain the situation. The employee doesn’t speak English, but together you find a solution. Your little mistake has turned into a fairly costly affair!

In the video, students will listen and read along as a typical French dialogue unfolds about un billet d'avion in France.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "This was fantastic, merci! More like this please!!!!"

French Adverbs Challenge Task Cards Activity and Lesson Guide

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

Common, short French ADVERBS in 3 tenses - Lesson guide - 75 practice cards

This resource focuses on teaching and practicing 25 common, short French adverbs in the present tense, passé composé, and futur proche. Where to place these adverbs in sentences can be surprising to students since placement of adverbs is very different than in English. There are lots of examples in French and English included in my video lesson (here's the link to my free lesson).

This resource is included in my French Adverbs Bundle.

Included:

  • 75 numbered practice cards with answer key
  • 10 page lesson guide to accompany the video lesson (great for a last minute substitute teacher lesson plan)
  • Quiz: The same 75 sentences from the practice cards, but this time they're in FRENCH and are written without adverbs. The adverb to be used is in parentheses, and students have to place it correctly in the sentence. Use the same answer key as for the cards.

Step 1: Download, print, and distribute the 10 page lesson guide.

Step 2: If you wish, have your students watch my 35 minute video tutorial on short, common French adverbs. They will learn how to use these 25 adverbs in the present tense, passé composé, and futur proche.

Step 3: Download your set of 75 translation practice cards to give your students a true challenge. An answer key is included so that students can work individually, with partners, or in small groups and check their own work.

Step 3: Administer the quiz and see how much your students have learned!

I've included a paper free version (PDF) that students can use digitally on various devices as well as versions with 4 cards per page that you can print and cut out for years of no-prep, ready to use, hands-on activities.

➯ This resource is included in my French 1 & 2 curriculum: Ça y est, je parle français!

Included:

  • 75 numbered translation practice cards (see examples below)
  • Numbered answer key
  • 10 page printable lesson guide
  • Click here for the link to my 30 minute comprehensive video lesson that accompanies this resource

Examples (practice cards):

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

French verbs like OUVRIR - Lesson and exercises in 3 tenses

This is a comprehensive French lesson which includes 3 worksheets in 3 tenses. Students learn how to use the irregular -IR verbs ouvrir, offrir, souffrir, découvrir, and couvrir in the present, passé composé, and imperative tenses. This ready-to-go lesson would be perfect to use as a substitute lesson plan.

This resource is included in my French Verbs Like Ouvrir Bundle.

Before beginning this lesson, students should be familiar with using the passé composé with avoir as helping verb, and with using the imperative with -ER verbs since these irregular verbs follow the same pattern.

Step 1: Download, print, and distribute the 12 page lesson guide. There's plenty of space for students to take notes and write examples as you teach or play my video lesson.

Step 2: Show my video lesson on irregular French verbs like ouvrir, offrir, souffrir, couvrir, and découvrir. Since you will likely want to teach these verbs using your own methods, this video lesson is a bonus that is also available on YouTube. You may use it as supplementary work to help struggling students outside of the classroom, or on a day when you need a ready-to-go substitute assignment.

Step 3: Quiz / homework / worksheet: Present tense - Includes ten sentences that are not the same as in steps 4 & 5.

Step 4: Quiz / homework / worksheet: Passé composé - Includes ten sentences that are not the same as in steps 3 & 5.
