Habitat Centers and Activities for The Forest

This packet provides activities and centers about the different kinds of animals and trees that live in the forest. It can be a simple packet for talking about the animals and plants in general or you can go further by learning about the plants in the coniferous forest verses the plants that live in the deciduous forest. Pages 3-5 – These pages are a sorting activity where students can sort the animals and plants according to whether they are in a deciduous forest or a coniferous forest. Combine this sorting set with those from other Habitat sets for more sorting options. Pages 6-13 – The pages are for drawing pictures of different kinds of forests and drawing animals that live there. Student will write the names for the animals they draw. There are pages for forests, woodlands, the Amazon and the African jungle. Each type of forest has 2 pages with different writing lines. Pages 14-19 – These are poster pages for each type of forest and the plants and animals that live there. Pages 20-23 – These are clip cards for telling whether the animals live in the woodlands or the rain forest. The cards are available with and without the animal names Page 24 – This is a memory/concentration game. Print this sheet twice and cut them out to make the game! Pages 25-32 – Available in color and in black and white, these are forest picture cards. You can use these to hang around the room for reference or combine them with other Habitat sets to make sorting mats. You can also combine these from other sets to create a habitat book. Pages 33-34 – Available in color and in black and white, they are small animal cards to use to sort on the forest mats. Pages 35-36 – Clip Cards where you clip whether the tree or parts of trees are found in a coniferous forest or a deciduous forest. Page 37 – Owl Crafts Page 38 – Factual Reading Page and Simple coloring activity. Page 39 – Deciduous and Coniferous Forest page: Color the pictures that are found in the deciduous forest yellow and in the coniferous forest green. In this product, different forms of energy are reviewed. Students will learn that energy exists in other forms, what energy is, how you can't always see energy, stored energy vs. energy in motion and examples for students to make connections with each, kinetic energy, examples of kinetic energy for students to make connections with it in real life, students will locate and circle the different kinds of kinetic energy, potential and kinetic energy and how it can go back and forth (picture explanations are also included to provide a visual), different forms of energy - electrical, light, sound, thermal, chemical, and mechanical energy are reviewed - their meanings and examples of each along with pictures so students can make connections with what they are learning in their personal life, what matter is and how it is in chemical energy, and energy transformation picture examples are provided. Students will then be required to write down the different types of energy that change to other kinds of energy when they are provided with picture examples. Students will also be required to draw picture and write down the forms of energy that were used to show energy transformation. At the end of the product, students can complete the review that includes short answer and multiple choice questions.

Throughout the product, students will answer short answer comprehension questions to ensure comprehension after reviewing each page of notes.

Music is inspiring and is a great way to help students find interest in the topic being studied and grasp the information. I use it often! This lesson implements June Carter Cash's and Johnny Cash's song, Ring of Fire, as part of the introduction. In addition, the lesson discusses not only the plates but also the boundaries and how they move creating new landforms. Students will, in addition, track and plot earthquakes and volcanoes.

OBJECTIVE:

o The learner will identify the Ring of Fire’s geographical location and will identify it as a region.

o The learner will describe the events that occur along the Ring of Fire—earthquakes and volcanic activity.

o The learner will plot recent earthquakes and volcanoes in the Pacific Ocean on a map to discover the relationship between these events and the plate boundaries.

o The learner will determine the types of boundaries that lie within the Ring of Fire

MATERIAL NEEDED:
o Copies of Ring of Fire lyrics, Johnny Cash version, written by June Carter Cash (Included)

o Technology to play the song as learners follow along with the lyrics. (Find the song on Youtube or Spotify)

o Demonstrations: Graham crackers, peanut butter, a plate, and something with which to spread the peanut butter (or substitute icing or anything creamy) (5) bowl of water (If you want you can have students take part in the demonstration, provide enough for learners to work in groups.)

o Tectonic Plate Puzzle (Included)

o Map to display the Ring of Fire (Included)

o Ring of Fire Tracking Map to identify seismic activity along the Ring of Fire. (Included)

The “Science Kids” series is intended to help teachers implement developmentally appropriate, hands-on science activities for children in Preschool, Kindergarten and the early grades.
