The point of a social story is to use a patient and reassuring tone to teach children about social situations in a way that can be easily understood. Social stories can be useful for any child who is struggling to understand a situation or concept or needs help to understand a social skill or social cue, expectations, perspectives, common responses or is troubled about an upcoming event but social stories are particularly useful for children on the autistic spectrum for whom social cues can be challenging and who often suffer anxiety if they do not know what to expect from a situation.

These books should be used over and over to reinforce the point so I would suggest either putting the pages into a display book or laminating and binding them.

The print-and-go bookmarks are saved as a secured pdf (non-editable due to clipart copyright).

The editable templates are in secured PowerPoint form. This format will allow text changes and editing font colors, etc. Graphics, clipart and photos may be inserted for personal use. If you do not have PowerPoint then you can use a free on-line version at ww.officelive.com - you just need to create an account.

You can change the font to whatever you prefer or already use in your class - I know I have favorites!

This resource is versatile and can be used as a quick reference guide, a sort and match activity lesson, within individual or small group sessions or even as a supplement to your SEL lessons! Laminate and glue this resource to a file folder for repeated use and longevity.

You will need scissors, glue and a file folder. Alternatively, you can assemble this resource using hook and look adhesive dots. Simply apply these to the page templates of Helpful and Unhelpful Coping Skills and use the sorting cards to encourage students to differentiate and reflect on the various skills.
