The Calendar Talk - Daily Journal Writing is designed to help students start reading and writing immediately to discuss the day, date, and weather. Students can also begin speaking in the same class period with some guidance. Depending in the class, in the first few days, students write independently but you answer the questions out loud so they can hear pronunciation until they feel more confident to read their answers.
Days 3-5: Continue discussing responses after the journal each day. This will help them with writing and speaking.
Days 6 and on (or when you know they are ready): When used consistently, students will be able to speak with the phrases very quickly. Have them sit in groups and discuss their journals as you walk around the room. I often keep track of points on Class Dojo and give them a goal to shoot for.
Scaffold so that students will be able to talk without the journal eventually. You will be surprised at how quickly they are able to use the words and phrases on their own.
Use the words and phrases that they have learned in other activities.
Add the questions and answers to write stories as a class or individually. I tell students to include the day, date, weather, etc in all of their stories.
Ask students what another student said work on other perspectives, i.e. I, you, he, she, etc.

Back to School - French Craftivity - Royalty for the Day Activity, Low Prep
By Cheryl Bennett
Are you a CI teacher that struggles with whether to teach tu and vous first? I like to pick one and stick with it for a time to avoid confusion. In the past, I have used the tu form because the end sounds are the same for je, il/elle/on forms. This kept everything simple and kept target structures limited. However, vous is a very important pronoun in French. I don't want to think about sending kids to France and being in the habit of using tu. While some francophones would be sympathetic, some might be offended.
So, I have discovered a way to teach both simultaneously with a clear visual cue. A CRAFTIVITY, if you will. All you need in the classroom are
How does it work?
What if someone forgets to use the vous form with royalty? They have to pay a royalty tax! This is included in the resource. The student who has still kept their royalty coin(s) because they remembered to use the vous form can get a prize or just bragging rights! You can even have the class interview the student about things they like, dislike, etc. so everyone can learn about their king, queen, or whatever royal title they prefer.
Accommodation: Some students don't like being the center of attention for the entire class. In this case, you can group students together. Three in a group is a good number but use whatever works for you. Each group has one royal student. The others in the group have to use the vous form with that student and the royal student uses the tu form with everyone else (except maybe the teacher). You can even rotate groups so several students get the chance to talk to each royal member. Of course, the member of royalty stays on their "throne" while others come to see them.
You can use this for whatever level you choose. While I like the idea of starting with level one, you could wait. Furthermore, you can use this activity every year you teach, no matter the level. Even though students may be comfortable with tu and vous before level one is over, letting someone have a special day is good. They will have the opportunity to practice both pronouns and their conjugations with new verbs and new tenses or moods.
Students will feel special and you will see them grow in their language and confidence. So little for us to invest with such a great return on investment!

J'ai...Qui a... French Antonyms Opposites Activities - I have...Who has - BUNDLE
By Love Learning Languages - French Resources
This French antonyms - opposites bundle includes three sets of J'ai - Qui a activities. Depending on class size you can give each student more than one card or have them play in small groups. Sets 1 & 2 have 39 cards each and Set 3 has 53 cards. Print and laminate these cards if possible to use them year after year.
How it works: Once each student has a card (or cards), the one who has the card that says Je commence le jeu begins the activity. He says, for example, Je commence le jeu. Qui a un antonyme pour calme? The person who has the card with J'ai bruyant on it says, J'ai bruyant. Qui a un antonyme pour gracieux? And so the game goes on until the last card is called and that student's card will say, J'ai _____. Le jeu est terminé!
Another idea is to prepare two sets of cards, divide your class into two groups and let each group have a go to see which team can get through the entire deck of cards the fastest. It's a very engaging and fun activity!

French Numbers - Colors - School Supplies Battleship Games - BUNDLE
By Love Learning Languages - French Resources
French Numbers - Colors - School Supplies Battleship Games - BUNDLE
Use this classic game format to have your students practice les nombres 1 - 20, les couleurs et les fournitures scolaires vocabulary. These are NO PREP activities, just print and go. The games does not include school subjects, just school supplies and a few things around the classroom. 5 versions of the game are included in each set.
One set is for numbers and the other is for colors. Both sets use the same 40 vocabulary words.
Students randomly place ships on their grid at the top of the sheet by drawing filled in circles. The number of circles for each of their six battleships is indicated at the top of the page. As they try to discover the location of their opponent's ships, they use the grid on the bottom of the sheet to keep track. Instructions are provided in English on each page. Have a look at the preview to see what these games look like.
A list of 8 vocabulary words is written in the left column, and random numbers 1 - 20 are written on the top in numeric form on one set. The other set has masculine and feminine forms of 8 colors at the top. Students randomly match the words on the left with numbers or colors at the top. Some of the vocabulary is deliberately singular when the number 1 is on the grid, so that's something students will have to watch out for! This will give them an opportunity to see the plural forms of the words.
There is not an answer key included with this resource due to the number of possible responses.
Growing Bundle of Bataille Navale Games
This resource includes 40 different vocabulary words related to les fournitures scolaires. You get five versions of the game in each set for a total of 10 games.
How to play:
Print out one page of the version of this game that you want to use per student. Students draw circles to represent their boats on the grid at the top of the game board. Students play against each other to try to find and eventually sink their opponent’s boats.
Eight school related vocabulary words are written in the vertical column and random numbers 1 - 20 or colors are written in the boxes at the top. To choose a square, the player must say a word on the left and a number or color at the top. The vocabulary words have (M) or (F) written next to them instead of articles in case they need to say un or une for a singular word in the numbers set. The colors set includes indefinite articles.
All of the vocabulary they’ll need is written right on the game sheet. Each game sheet includes two battleship grids, one for the student and one for keeping track of guesses.

Mots Fréquents - French Dots & Boxes Game and Word Walls - Sight Words BUNDLE
By Love Learning Languages - French Resources
Mots Fréquents - French Dots & Boxes Game and Word Walls - Sight Words BUNDLE
This is a set of 25 easy and fun no-prep games and word walls that will elicit a lot of exposure and pronunciation for learning French sight words / mots fréquents for beginners. You can use this resource with children or teenagers as long as they are beginners and you want them to learn a lot of words (see lists for all sets below, and also available for individual sale). These one-page dots & boxes games include directions, and word walls of all ten words in each set. Since there are only ten words per set, I recommend cutting out and laminating the words for your wall, and keeping them in marked envelopes to pull out and quickly hang up when you want to focus on these sight words year after year. The games can also be laminated and used repeatedly with dry-erase markers or played on an iPad with whiteboard tools.
Here's an idea: Keep the words on the wall for several days or even a week, and have students play dots and boxes with a new partner every time!
Objective: Complete more boxes than your component. Each player draws lines using a different color. On your turn, make a horizontal or vertical line from one dot to another. Say the words on either side of the line you drew. If you complete a box on your turn, draw an X in the box using your color. Once all of the boxes have been completed, count to see who got the most.
MOTS FRÉQUENTS - SIGHT WORDS
SET 1: le - la - un - une - a - à - ma - sa - ça - ta
SET 2: si - de - ne - pas - se - me - te - ce - les - des

French Numbers - Colors - Clothes - Battleship Games - BUNDLE
By Love Learning Languages - French Resources
French Numbers - Colors - Clothes - Battleship Games - BUNDLE
Use this classic game format to have your students practice les nombres 1 - 20, les couleurs et les vêtements vocabulary. These are NO PREP activities, just print and go.
This resource includes 40 different vocabulary words related to les vêtements. You get five versions of the game in each set for a total of 10 games.
How to play:
Print out one page of the version of this game that you want to use per student. Students draw circles to represent their boats on the grid at the top of the game board. Students play against each other to try to find and eventually sink their opponent’s boats.
Eight clothes / vêtements related vocabulary words are written in the vertical column and random numbers 1 - 20 or colors are written in the boxes at the top.
