Social-Emotional Learning

Listening to classical music has been shown to help with self-awareness, empathy, and self-regulation. Since social-emotional learning is essential for children, incorporating classical music into your classroom or homeschool is a great way to support their development.

Talk about the emotions evoked by the selected music. What does the music make them feel? Happy? Sad? Anxious? Peaceful? Help students identify and label their feelings. Ask open-ended questions about the music and encourage students to share their thoughts and feelings.

Discuss the different instruments used in the piece of music. What does each instrument contribute to the overall sound? Encourage students to make up a story based on the music. What is happening in the story? Who are the characters? Where does it take place?

While listening, students can draw a picture or scene that comes to mind. What colors are used? What shapes? Why?

NoteStackers is a new game from ZS Music Publishing where students have to quickly think of how the alphabet moves back and forth. NoteStackers Level 1 is Bass F to Treble G on the grand staff.

Set up is simple: Just print, cut and play! There are 8 cards on a page, with two notes on each page. Each note has a card front and optional card back. Every level also as a different shape on the card incase you purchase and use multiple levels with your students. The card backs contain the level name in color, which you can print in black and white on white paper, or colored paper or card stock. For durability, you can laminate these cards as well. This product is reproducible, so you can make as many copies as you wish.

Playing the game is fun and easy! Players take turns putting down cards in order of the music alphabet. Cards that can be plated should have  the same letter, one letter before, or one letter after the letter that’s on the play pile - essentially step down, same note, or step up. (For example, if the card in play is C, players can put down B, C, or D. If the card in play is A, players can put down G, A, or B.) After a player has put down a card, they should draw another, as each player should have five cards during the game. 

The game will end either when the draw pile as been depleted, or when the teacher decides time is up. If time is still going and the draw pile has depleted, players can use the play pile as the new draw pile.

NoteStackers Level 1 uses the Middle C Position (in piano): Bass F up to Treble G.

Set up is simple: Just print and play! There are two types of pages in the PDF document: Ink-friendly with a white background, and full-color backgrounds for online lesson use. If you plan to print pages out, lamination is suggested for the longevity of the pages, or you can print multiple pages on a sheet for exit tickets, worksheets, and more! The full-color background pages are great for projecting on whiteboards, online lessons, and other digital uses! This product is reproducible, so you can make as many copies as you wish.

Playing the game is as simple as set up! Each page has a note in the middle, and students must think of the note that comes before and after the given note. Then, the correct note is written into the grey boxes on the left and right sides, along with the note name. You can play this in a private lesson setting, or as a whole class! Since this is a flashcard-type game, you can play this for as long as needed, say for a bell-ringer, or for those last five minutes of the class.

Bonus Gameplay: For a twist on the game, you can have students practice intervals and think of 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, etc instead of 2nds or steps as the game is set up for. This would be a great way for students to learn and practice the circle of 5ths and circle of 4ths.

YUMMY CHEESY PIZZA is a fun and simple piece for your beginner that only uses the F Major 5-Finger scale, in honor of National Cheese Pizza Day! This is agreat, quick piece for your students to work on their F Major 5-Finger Position. You’ll notice the tempo says “A Cheesy Swing!”, so you can introduce swung 8th notes to your students to have a little fun with the song. The song is good for beginners at 16 measures!

There are four versions of the song you can use with students:

1. Version 1 with regular note heads and flat notes.
2. Version 2 with note names in the note heads and flat notes.
3. Version 3 with regular note heads in the key of F.
4. Version 4 with note names in the note heads in the key of F.

What is a Multi-Version Song? These are songs we have created that have different versions of the same song in the same file so you have some flexibility with your students who are at different learning stages! This allows you to provide these songs to students no matter what level they're at!

This means that the song will come with and without letters in the noteheads, and if the song is in a key signature other than C Major or A Minor, the song will also have versions in the given key signature and version with no key signature and the necessary accidentals. Most of our Multi-Version Songs have at least two to four versions in the file.

Hot Dog is a fun and simple piece for your beginner that only uses the C Major 5-Finger scale! The lyrics are quirky about wanting to eat dozens and hundreds of hot dogs with ketchup, mustard, and relish!

You’ll notice the tempo says “With Swing!”, so you can introduce swung 8th notes to your students to have a little fun with the song. Also in measure 11, the F is sharped, so students to work on moving their finger, and/or finding the F-sharp on the piano keyboard. 

The song is longer for beginners at 32 measures. You are welcome to shorten the song and end it at measure 16.  

There are two versions of the song you can use with students:

Playing the game is as simple as set up! Each page has a note in the middle, and students must think of the note that comes before and after the given note. Then, the correct note is written into the grey boxes on the left and right sides, along with the note name. You can play this in a private lesson setting, or as a whole class! Since this is a flashcard-type game, you can play this for as long as needed, say for a bell-ringer, or for those last five minutes of the class.

Bonus Gameplay: For a twist on the game, you can have students practice intervals and think of 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, etc instead of 2nds or steps as the game is set up for. This would be a great way for students to learn and practice the circle of 5ths and circle of 4ths.
