They may reflect on how the statement connects to their own lives, share a personal experience related to it, or elaborate on their thoughts concerning its importance in greater detail.

▶️ Variation #2: This Anticipation Guide worksheet format includes a list of statements accompanied by columns for "AGREE," "DISAGREE," and "COMMENTS." Students are instructed to read each statement and mark either "AGREE" or "DISAGREE." Peer pressure can ultimately affect teens' decision-making, behaviors, emotions, and self-esteem. It's often hard to navigate difficult situations when dealing with negative peer pressure and hard to take risks when experiencing positive peer pressure.

PASSAGE TITLE: “Forgiveness”

This resource includes ONE full-page reading passage related to Forgiveness and Perspective-taking. The passage is in dialogue form to make it more interesting and relatable. To determine whether this passage is suitable for your students, this is what the passage is about:

A female teenager feels angry and betrayed because her male best friend revealed her big secret. As a result, she ignores his calls and text messages giving him no opportunity to explain why he revealed her big secret. Her female friend encourages her to listen to his side of the story, understand his perspective, and practice forgiveness. (Positive Peer Pressure)

After students read the passage, they will complete a worksheet that consists of four open-ended questions and support their responses with evidence from the text.

When people do things we don’t like, we get upset, angry, hurt, and/or disappointed because they don’t act or behave in a manner that we want or expect them to. Sometimes, we try to force or manipulate them into acting and behaving a certain way. We need to give up on trying to control others by letting them make their own decisions and verbalizing and dealing with our disappointments in an appropriate manner.

It is important for teenagers to understand that the way they react and respond to situations can either add fuel to the fire or diffuse tension, resolve conflict, and minimize negative emotions. Teaching teens how to respond appropriately to situations both verbally and nonverbally, even when they are angry, hurt, and disappointed can greatly help them prevent conflicts from escalating.

These THREE activities will give students to practice managing their disappointments, anger, and concerns in an appropriate manner. Students will practice expressing their concerns, disappointments, or feelings in a way that is mature and respectful.

This packet of work presents students with a realistic story of a male teen struggling with accepting his own identity. Wary that he may be judged, shunned and not accepted, the LGBTQ+ teen describes the immense pressure he is under. Your students will discuss and unpack what is means for some teens to be gay in an environment that doesn’t support homosexuality and diversity.

Students who identify as being part of the LGBTQ+ community may find themselves hiding who they are from their peers and family. For some students, they may be wrestling with conflicting feelings of wanting to come out. However, some may choose not to out of fear - just like the narrator in the reading passage.

Through a variety of activities, students are guided to explore the concepts within the text. An anticipation guide helps learners to consider their current thoughts and beliefs surrounding the experiences of LGBTQ+ people. Students are led through reflections and prompts that encourage empathetic thinking. As teachers, we see the value in equipping our students with the coping strategies they need to deal with their relationships and friendships. These activities encourage social and emotional learning that they can use to understand the difficulties that others may face in their daily lives.

This resource allows for courageous conversations on this sensitive topic through the use of a reading passage and anticipation guide. It’s essential that young people develop empathy for those who are different to them. This resource examines the short story of a teenage boy who kept his LGBTQ+ identity a secret from even his closest friends out of fear of being rejected and losing them. He eventually musters the courage to reveal his only secret to his best friend Jacob. To both Ethan and the reader's surprise, Jacob's reaction and response leaves readers feeling inspired and better understanding the positive impact empathy and a willingness to listen and act can be on an LGBTQ+ individual.

Many LGBTQ+ students will find themselves struggling with the unknown. The way in which students respond to LGBTQ+ identities and relationships could provide key support and understanding for their peers. Within our classrooms, we may have teens who are discovering their own sexual identity. This resource, and story, highlights positive ways that students might respond to their LGBTQ+ peers.

Through reading the passage and delving into reflection questions, your students will learn important ways to show empathy and support for others. Students will also recognize and examine examples of unsupportive behaviors and actions that can be hurtful to LGBTQ+ friends who fear coming out or just came out. They will make connections between these key ideas and the passage under study. They will also learn about why many LGBTQ+ teens hide or disguise their sexual orientation and/or gender identity for and brainstorm healthy coping strategies to help navigate LGBTQ+ conflicts related to coming out. Importantly, the anticipation guide includes ideas related to the story to help build background knowledge and to discuss related themes.

It’s essential that young people develop empathy for those who are different to them. This resource examines the short story of a teenage boy who gradually reveals his LGBTQ+ identity to different groups of people at his school. At one point, and for a brief moment, he becomes a victim of bullying until a friend of his moves from being a “bystander” to an “upstander” and speaks up against this negative treatment. He challenges the boy's homophobic comments, offensive remarks, and attitudes (in a nonviolent way) making his LGBTQ friend feeling safe, valued, and reassured. This short passage leaves readers feeling inspired and better understanding the positive impact empathy can have on an LGBTQ+ individual.

Many LGBTQ+ students will find themselves struggling with the unknown. The way in which students respond to LGBTQ+ identities and relationships could provide key support and understanding for their peers. Within our classrooms, we may have teens who are discovering their own sexual identity. This resource, and story, highlights positive ways that students might respond to their LGBTQ+ peers.

This reading passage examines the short story of the formation and spread of a piece of gossip. It follows many characters and their role in propagating the gossip, as well as exploring the ways the gossip affects them. From this passage, students will analyze the true nature of gossip and also the part social media plays in spreading rumors.
