Summer Fun: Family STEM Challenges with SAMMIE STEAM!

You can get a big bang for your buck with this resource! Think "Flat Stanley" of Science. Sammie Steam was designed to look like a cross between the scientist Albert Einstein and the artist Leonardo da Vinci. This packet contains many suggested Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math challenges. It was created with the purpose of getting families actively involved with their children by completing challenges that will have them all having fun! Sammie STEAM, the adventure dog, will become your students' companion as they complete these activities outside of the school day. This will help foster a strong home/school relationships! As the children complete the activities and share them with the class other students will eagerly join in! It is a perfect way to encourage the students to make connections from one academic area to the other. This package offers differentiated ways for the students to document their STEAM experience. Students are encouraged to use photography, artwork, writing, a log etc. This original challenge, created by the STEM to STEAM Trio, is aligned to the Next Generation Science and Common Core standards. Firstly, there are eight reading comprehension activities, or informational texts, about:
These activities require NO PREP and have a body of text that students need to read through thoroughly; then they can use the text to find the comprehension and grammar answers. All texts then have an extension activity for those fast finishers. Answers, for teacher use, are on the final page of each document.
Then, there are four biography writing units about Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, Charles Darwin and Isaac Newton. The units have been split into four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each.

The first lesson is interactive and involves students cutting out facts, and then sorting these facts into paragraphs. In the second lesson the students need to use these facts to write four paragraphs. Then, in the third lesson children need to choose the most important facts and include these in an introduction; after this they need to answer several questions on a prompt sheet before writing up their conclusion. In the final lesson students need to check their draft paragraphs for mistakes before writing up their work on to a neat copy on the template provided.

Make reviewing tundra biomes fun with this engaging hands-on 3D diorama science craft project! Students learn about the tundra biome and animals that live there and then decorate a shoe box based on what they learned! Students are responsible for decorating the box and putting a creative scene inside that represents the tundra biome. Students love it when they get to do projects and make their learning come to life!
Here’s what you’ll get:
What is a diorama?
A diorama is a three-dimensional scene built to illustrate a topic. Dioramas are small scenes created with layers of materials. A diorama can be made out of a shoe box or similar box that includes a variety of information and pictures about a topic.
Students create a diorama by cutting, coloring, painting, and gluing pieces inside the box to create a model that shows a situation, such as a historical event or animals in their natural environment. Students can be encouraged to add real features such as grass, sand, sticks, etc.
The dioramas do not come with specific assembly instructions. Students should learn about the tundra biome first, and use the pieces within this resource to creatively build their own unique diorama! This is a fun way for students to learn and get hands-on with the lesson/topic.

What is a lapbook?
A lapbook is a book made from a file folder that includes various information about a topic. Students can create a lap book by cutting, coloring (when needed), and gluing them inside a file folder. The finished file folder book is called a lapbook because the book is usually big enough to spread out on your lap to read.
Lapbooks do not come with specific assembly instructions. Students are to use the information to build their books creatively and uniquely! This is a fun way for students to learn and get hands-on with the information!
All of the hard work is done for you. Just print the pieces, give each student one file folder, and let your students get creative!
