This is a fun group of worksheets for Spanish bilingual classrooms to work on the upcoming Groundhog Day!

This document includes:

• A vocabulary page (tracing words)
• A word search with the vocabulary words
• A poem to be completed with the words of the vocabulary
• A poem with all words included
• Answer key

The French Phonics Mats are ideal for the K-2 French learner who is just starting to blend sounds in French. Use the NO PREP individual mat cards for centres, additional one-on-one resources for small group instruction, or for students with an IEP who engaged in strategies from the Science of Reading. Ideal for task bins as they can be interchanged daily or weekly depending on your student programming.

What to do:

1. Copy and laminate the sheets. Cut out individual task cards on the left and then Velcro mini dot Velcro to the back of each consonant card. Add a Velcro to the Phonics Mat.

Put the mats at a centre with a whiteboard marker and an eraser (I use socks from the Dollar Store…much cheaper and they last forever!)

2. You can also use this resource by simply laminating each sheet and using a whiteboard marker to make CV sound blends.

Science of Reading:

These cards are aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing reading fluency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Once you have established the strategies for identifying sounds, initial sounds, and blending sounds, segmenting sounds, students will be able to use these self-driven Phonics Mats on their own. What a great way to build learning autonomy!

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple French Phonics Mats to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in reading and confidence in reading strategies.

Phonics Mats are designed to build a number of common French sounds and get more challenging as they go on.

What grade level:

I personally use these mats with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the phonics mats with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French reading skills and those with an IEP.

Phonics mats are ideal for a fun centre for Senior Kindergarten and the students will be thrilled to see them used once they graduate to Grade 1.

This is a set of 12 color mini-posters in Spanish that you can use to decorate your classroom or bulletin board in a fun, colorful, and educational manner. The mini-posters are 2.5" wide and 10" long and come with a title card and in two different versions (one with reflection and one without). This activity is a great way to have your students create their own bingo cards and then to play with them. It comes with many versions depending on your Core French groups.

This resource includes a worksheet with a blank grid for students to create their own word search. Eleven colors are written on the sheet. When they've finished making it they can exchange with another student and solve each solve the puzzle made by their classmate. 3 ready-made word searches are included. You can choose which one to give your students as each one is of a different level of difficulty. I like to print the ready-made search that I want to use on one side of a paper, and print the make your own version on the other side. I have used this resource with 8 year old students as well as 14 year old students. The basic puzzle is suitable for grades 1 and 2. Words are hidden across and down only. The intermediate puzzle is suitable for grades 3 and 4. Words are hidden across, down and diagonally. The advanced puzzle is suitable to grades 5+. Words are hidden across, down, diagonally and backwards.

Directions

Materials Needed:

• One of the 10 worksheets or the editable template where you add your own words
• A regular six-sided die
• Colors
• Optional: A device with a QR code scanner (phone, tablet, etc.)

Rolling the Die:

• Students roll a six-sided die to determine which color word they read in Spanish.
• Students can also scan the QR code on the worksheet using a device with a QR code scanner to access a virtual dice roller.

Reading the Word:

• Students match the number rolled with the corresponding color word on their worksheet.
• Students read aloud the color in Spanish to practice pronunciation.

Marking Progress:

• Once students read a word, they should shade in color the box using the color that matches the Spanish word read.
• If students roll a number they have already completed, they should roll again until they land on a new word.
• Students continue rolling and reading until they have completed all the words on their worksheet.

Get your students more motivated in class with puntos. Using these tickets with “puntos” is a great classroom management system when you want your class follow directions. I give “puntos” to my classes when students participate, use their Spanish in full sentences or when transitions are good, taking advantage of every minute that we have. At the end of each day or week we count how many points we have and if we have certain amount, we can celebrate with a “fiesta”, movie or games.
