Why do you need this?

Emerging readers need practice moving from decoding words to comprehending passages. These worksheets use simple stories and comprehension questions to build important literacy foundations. Featuring short paragraphs with CVC vocabulary and matching exercises, these materials help pave the way for reading proficiency.

How and when might you use this?

Each page includes a short narrative using basic sight words and repetitive consonant-vowel-consonant terms. This allows young readers to focus on making meaning from the passage, rather than struggling through complex words. After reading, students answer reading comprehension questions relating to story details and events.

Each comprehension has 3 levels of questions - one easy multiple choice question with pictures, one where children take information directly from the text and one where they have to use inference to work out the answer. The vocabulary aligns with early phonics lessons to reinforce letter-sound relationships too. Parents and teachers can track progress across the repetitive activities.

This resource was created in order to help Speech Language Pathologists target initial phonemes at the word level.

The h-insertion trick can be an extremely helpful strategy to use when children are stuck at the isolation level of a sound. By producing /h/ after the initial sound, the child continues their air flow, making it easier to produce the following vowel. This helps them to eliminate the prior habit of producing the incorrect sound.

These NO PREP, easy to read decoding cards are ideal for the K-2 classroom in French immersion, Core French, or Modern Language setting. Aligns perfectly with the Science of Reading and can supplement any reading program.

These cards are great for making a quick learning centre, a great way to check reading fluency on the fly, or to do a deep dive with those that need the one-on-one attention.

What to do:

I make 4 copies of a few cards for centre activities, a few sets for a clear folder binder for ‘shoulder to shoulder, knee to knee partner reading, and a set of cards for a quick quiet reading session if we are getting too silly in class.

Science of Reading:

These cards aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing reading fluency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in reading and confidence in reading strategies.

Texts are designed to build a number of common French sounds and get more challenging as they go on.
