Why do you need this?

Recognizing beginning sounds lays the groundwork for reading skills. These worksheets give students practice isolating and identifying initial phonemes through interactive activities.

Connecting sounds to letters and pictures reinforces phonetic awareness. With pictures of things like food, animals, and vehicles, children apply knowledge to familiar vocabulary.

How and when might you use this?

Students will look at each picture, identify what the object is, and determine the first letter that makes the beginning sound of the word. They will then locate that letter among the letters listed and color it in. These worksheets can be used individually or in small groups as a fun way for K-2 students to practice phonics skills. The PDF worksheets work well for whole class instruction, independent practice, homework, or morning work. This resource provides a multisensory approach to build phonics skills using visual, auditory, and fine motor practice tracing and coloring the beginning letter.

This resource was created in order to help Speech Language Pathologists target initial phonemes at the word level.

The h-insertion trick can be an extremely helpful strategy to use when children are stuck at the isolation level of a sound. By producing /h/ after the initial sound, the child continues their air flow, making it easier to produce the following vowel. This helps them to eliminate the prior habit of producing the incorrect sound.

Spring short vowel mini set - Included is one of each of the activities featuring short a.

Students will write and wipe or use manipulative letters. Students will build letters using flower petals, tap out sounds with Mr. Frog, and slowly talk with Mr. Turtle. Fun and engaging activity sheets to reinforce and explore French Phonics SOUNDS in the Kindergarten to Grade 3 French Immersion classroom. Students will love the intriguing graphics and have fun finding the target sounds, searching for Remembrance Day vocabulary, and building encoding and decoding skills with each activity. This activity aligns with the Science of Reading and blends well with all French programs across Canada and around the globe where French is being taught. How to prepare this resource:

Prep for this activity DOES INCLUDE SOME TIME ON YOUR PART! Make a copy of each page, insert into clear pocket, dry erase pocket, or use as individual worksheets and watch as the giggles get started. My students LOVE these activities. I cannot make them fast enough.

Detailed instructions for each activity are set out at the top of each activity and could not be easier.

There is a little cutting and laminating involved with some activities but many use clear folders to make your job easier!

Perfect for a sub binder, emergency plans, or as a back up activity when you happen to have a few minutes to spare. A great set to have on hand as an extra centre activity at Remembrance Day/Veteran's Day time. Your K-3 Immersion students will love them!

When to use this resource in the classroom:
