60 ESL Speaking or writing question cards - How do you..?
This set of intermediate ESL conversation prompt cards will have your students talking to each other in English. These 60 question cards are terrific for discussion and also journal writing prompts. Each and every card is unique and makes your students think about how to do things in detail in English. Some are more advanced than others. Since there are so many of them you can easily print them, cut them out, and then sort them into stacks of different levels of difficulty for years and years of no-prep activities.
These speaking and writing prompt cards are meant for SECONDARY education and will not necessarily be a good fit for primary. The cards are in English only.
This activity is perfect for small groups or as a whole class activity. Use these cards as a review and vocabulary builder An easy to project PDF with only one card per page is included in case you want to work on the questions as a class without printing and cutting out the cards. Encourage your students to give a thorough complete answer and use the question as a basis for discussion. If the Question is "How do you build a snowman"? Then there should be a discussion not a one line answer "with snow.." These questions are great for essay writing as well!
ex: " I love building snowmen! In fact, I wish it would snow more often, so I could make one more often! When it snows a lot, at least two inches or more, I put on my winter clothes and my gloves and head to the park. There I starting by...." and so on. It's a really fun activity.

There are many ways you can use this set of 60 speaking cards:
➤ Print, laminate, cut out, punch holes and attach on a ring for small groups to ask and answer questions.
➤ Use as a warm-up speaking activity or ice breaker with a conversation partner. As students enter the classroom have them choose 2-3 cards from a box.
➤ Students who finish their work earlier than others can choose a few of the cards and write out their answers including reasons for their preferences.
➤ Use as exit tickets. Give each student a card before the end of class and as they walk out of the room they tell the teacher their answer.
➤ Stations: Put students into groups and divide the cards amongst them. Have groups rotate to a new station as they finish the cards.
➤ Use the cards with board games. Students must answer a question in order to move.
➤ Great resource for tutoring sessions.
➤ You can also use it as a writing exercise!

Completed with a partner, students will analyze how writers use metaphors in poetry by looking at examples. The PDF provides multiple examples to guide students. They will then read and analyze a mentor poem and utilize the same structure to write their poem. They will love creating their poems and watching their ideas come to life! This well-organized activity allows students to effortlessly become poets, while thinking about concise and precise word choice, counting syllables to create rhythm, getting exposure to high-quality examples, and learning something new! Writing a biography is a fun and interesting project for your students. This provides them with the opportunity to learn about someone that interests them and share it with their peers! This packet includes information to share with your students about what a biography is, why do we write a biography, and rules to follow when writing a biography. This packet also includes an example showing the process that is used to write a biography and the steps that are taken to add onto a biography to be sure it includes a beginning, middle and end. On the last few pages, it includes a template to help students come up with possible story ideas, add onto each paragraph they will include in their biography, and a reference sheet. Writing a play is a perfect project that gives students time to write about an event that happened in their life or an event that they made up. Once they are finished, they can share it with different groups of people and have their friends play each character. This packet includes information to share with your students about what a play is, what steps to follow when writing the beginning, middle and end of a play, why we write a play, who we write a play for, and tips to look for when rereading and editing. This packet also includes an example showing the process that is used to write with a play using a graphic organizer and an example of a play. On the last several pages, two templates are included to help students write the rough draft and final draft of their play that includes space for characters, props, act, scenes, and lines to show what their characters are saying.

This Four Corners Game is a fun, no-prep activity you can use to review Figurative Language that your students will LOVE! They will love moving around the room as you click through the 40 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! You will love this well-organized activity that allows students to test their knowledge, get exposure to high-quality examples, and even learn something new! This is an activity I use in my classroom every year during our narrative writing unit and I know your students will love it!

STUDENT GUIDELINES FOR USING THIS RESOURCE
After reading each figurative language example on the board, move to the side of the room labeled “Metaphor,” “Simile,” “Hyperbole,” or “Personification.” Be prepared to defend your choices. You may disagree with your classmates’ opinions but do so respectfully. (I typically go over each example with students and discuss the impact of the words or phrases to uncover the deeper meaning. Ask questions such as, "what is being compared?" or "what can the reader visualize?")
*As an optional follow-up activity, use my No-Prep Figurative Language Short Passage Set resource to assess individual understanding, homework, or assessment!
REFLECTION:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!
