The Great Gatsby WRITING ASSIGNMENTS | Creative AND Analytical Writing | AP LIT!

By Rigorous Resources for High School English

NEW IN 2020: Rigorous! Engaging! Thought-provoking! This 10-page EDITABLE document will set your students up to write both creatively and critically about Fitzgerald's masterpiece. The three writing assignments promise to elicit thoughtful engagement from all students without compromising on intellectual rigor.

Here's what you'll find inside:

Creative Writing Assignment: Invite students to write in Fitzgerald’s virtuosic prose style while filling in a missing scene from the novel. What did Gatsby write in his letter to Daisy? What was said when Gatsby and Daisy finally reunited at Nick’s house? This assignment can be given mid-unit after students finish reading Chapter Six. (1 page)

Analytical Writing Assignment: Challenge students to take their interpretations one step further by writing an analytical paper on Fitzgerald’s wonderfully complex novel. Let students choose from one of five profoundly thought-provoking sample topics — or invite them to develop an original topic of their own. Rubric included. (4 pages)

Q3 Practice Essay: Designed for AP Lit teachers, this in-class essay assignment will enable students to practice the "Q3" essay from the AP Literature and Composition Exam. Included are three recent Q3 prompts that feature The Great Gatsby as one of the recommended works of literary merit. The assignment asks students to respond to one prompt by composing a well-written essay in 40 minutes. (5 pages)

The writing assignments will come to you in a 10-page EDITABLE Word document that you can customize for your teaching style! The preview for this resource provides access to all 5 pages of the document. Click on the green “PREVIEW” button to see what you’ll get. . . .

Thank you for choosing “Rigorous Resources”!!

Happy teaching!

Adam Jernigan, Ph.D.

adamjernigan@gmail.com

Note: These writing assignments are also included in my Gatsby MEGA-Bundle. ESL speaking and writing prompt activity question cards - How do you..

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

60 ESL Speaking or writing question cards - How do you..?

This set of intermediate ESL conversation prompt cards will have your students talking to each other in English. These 60 question cards are terrific for discussion and also journal writing prompts. Each and every card is unique and makes your students think about how to do things in detail in English. Some are more advanced than others. Since there are so many of them you can easily print them, cut them out, and then sort them into stacks of different levels of difficulty for years and years of no-prep activities.

These speaking and writing prompt cards are meant for SECONDARY education and will not necessarily be a good fit for primary. The cards are in English only.

This activity is perfect for small groups or as a whole class activity. Use these cards as a review and vocabulary builder An easy to project PDF with only one card per page is included in case you want to work on the questions as a class without printing and cutting out the cards. Encourage your students to give a thorough complete answer and use the question as a basis for discussion. If the Question is "How do you build a snowman"? Then there should be a discussion not a one line answer "with snow.." These questions are great for essay writing as well!

ex: " I love building snowmen! In fact, I wish it would snow more often, so I could make one more often! When it snows a lot, at least two inches or more, I put on my winter clothes and my gloves and head to the park. There I starting by...." and so on. It's a really fun activity.

Just click here to follow my store!

Click here for more resources in English.

Included:

60 question cards

Easy to project PDF file (one card per page)

PDF files to cut out cards in color or grayscale

There are many ways you can use this set of 60 speaking cards:

➤ Print, laminate, cut out, punch holes and attach on a ring for small groups to ask and answer questions.

➤ Use as a warm-up speaking activity or ice breaker with a conversation partner. As students enter the classroom have them choose 2-3 cards from a box.

➤ Students who finish their work earlier than others can choose a few of the cards and write out their answers including reasons for their preferences.

➤ Use as exit tickets. Give each student a card before the end of class and as they walk out of the room they tell the teacher their answer.

➤ Stations: Put students into groups and divide the cards amongst them. Have groups rotate to a new station as they finish the cards.

➤ Use the cards with board games. Students must answer a question in order to move.

➤ Great resource for tutoring sessions.

➤ You can also use it as a writing exercise!
