* PowerPoint Presentation
* Reading Assignment and Worksheet
* DBQ's and Primary Sources

Perfect for Veteran's Day!

PowerPoint Presentation

This 13-slide PowerPoint presentation explores the experiences and contributions of women during the Civil War. It is an ideal lesson for the Civil War period or as a stand-alone resource for women’s history. It is also a good resource during Women’s History Month.

Each slide contains information and graphics that highlight women’s changing roles due to industrialization. It highlights the different experiences based on social classes as well as work experiences and early organizational efforts.

The PowerPoint slides are available both as PPT and PDF. Check the Bonus section for the additional file.

There is also an Easel Assessment. For Home Schoolers or for asynchronous learning, this is a valuable digital tool.

Reading Assignment and Worksheet

This three-page Reading Assignment and Worksheet provides an overview of the various activities, attributes and activities of women during the Civil War. Students will learn about the varied experiences of women, especially based on region, socio-economic status and cultural background.

Students can read this on their own in class, as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key.
Reading Assignment - 2 pages
Worksheet - 1 page

The worksheet is also available as a digital resource through Easel so students may complete it online.

Primary Source Analysis and DBQs

This 20 page DBQ and Primary Source Analysis activity gives students a chance to delve deeper into women’s experiences and contributions during the Civil War. In addition, there are two Document-Based Questions (DBQs) available for students to complete.

Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. Primary sources include speeches, essays, a declaration and cartoons. Each page of primary sources includes questions. There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source. An Answer Key to all the questions and the HAPPY process is available at the end of the packet. This is excellent practice for all high school students, particularly Honors and APUSH students, but all students will find these resources engaging.

Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers, college students or independent learners who want to learn more. Teachers can assign just a few sources to analyze or the entire packet. Student time will vary.

There is also an Easel Activity which allows students to answer the questions at the end of each primary source online. For homework purposes, Home Schoolers or for asynchronous learning, this is an especially valuable digital option.

This is part of the Women in American History Series which includes PowerPoint lessons as well as Reading Assignments and Worksheets, Primary Source Analysis and DBQs and Activities for other eras. Teaching units listed below with links but resources available individually as well.

Holiday Toy Trends Mini Research Unit

By Three Little Homeschoolers

Every year there's that ONE holiday toy that captures the hearts of kids and sends parents off to the store to grab the last one. This mini unit covers the history of Christmas toys through four decades (some of which you will remember!). The unit is divided into three parts and relies heavily on student research. The parts can be done at your own pace over the course of a week or over several weeks.

Part One

-Includes two reading passages, one about the history of holiday gift giving and one about the rise of the toy industry.

-Research Project: Students are given four worksheets, one for each of the decades (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s), and they must research toy trends for each decade

Part Two

-All of part two is in the included PowerPoint. This covers holiday advertising, starting with the early days of ads, through the department store catalog, and into modern television commercials.

-There are three links to toy commercials from the 70s, 80s, and 90s to watch with students

Part Three

-In part three, students will conduct an interview with an older friend or family member about their own holiday toy memories

-Final Project: Students pick one of three final projects to complete. Each project relates back to a different part of the unit.

This unit is geared towards a classroom, but is easily adapted to a homeschooler...in fact, I originally created it for mine! Every research activity is done solo and the PowerPoint can easily be used just for one or a handful of kiddos. This is also easily adaptable, in case you want to change anything for your students, but is no-prep, ready to go, as it is!

US History Unit Four - The Roosevelt Corollary Guided Reading Worksheet, slides

By Yugen Learning

This no-prep activity with lesson plans and printable and digital worksheets and slide deck for middle/high school students. Navigate the path of diplomatic assertiveness with our meticulously crafted printable Unit Four and guided reading reading journey on the significant role of the Roosevelt Corollary in US History.

Beyond a mere addition to the Monroe Doctrine, this policy, articulated by President Theodore Roosevelt, asserted the United States' right to intervene in the affairs of Latin American nations to stabilize their economic affairs. It was a clear signal of America's intent to act as the "policeman" of the Western Hemisphere, ensuring stability while warding off European intervention.

Embark with learners into:

  • Monroe Doctrine's Evolution: Delve into the original principles of the Monroe Doctrine, aimed at preventing European colonization and intervention in the Americas, and how Roosevelt sought to expand upon these principles.
  • Big Stick Diplomacy: Explore Roosevelt's philosophy of "speak softly and carry a big stick," understanding how the corollary was an embodiment of this approach, asserting American dominance while promoting stability.
  • Interventions and Implications: Understand the various instances where the Roosevelt Corollary was invoked, from interventions in the Dominican Republic to Nicaragua, and the broader implications for US-Latin American relations.
  • Legacy of a Diplomatic Doctrine: Trace the enduring impacts of the Roosevelt Corollary, from its influence on subsequent American foreign policies in the region to debates over its ethical and diplomatic ramifications.

Resource provides:

  • Editable introductory slide deck with 5 slides
  • Detailed lesson plan with extension activities suggestions
