This 90-minute lesson introduces students to World Red Cross Day, celebrated every year on May 8th. Using the educational video World Red Cross Day, students explore the history, principles, and global impact of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

The lesson begins with a warm-up discussion to activate prior knowledge, followed by two viewings of the video to support comprehension. Students then engage with a printable worksheet featuring vocabulary activities, comprehension questions, critical thinking prompts, and a creative drawing task where they design a badge or slogan based on Red Cross values. Through collaborative pair work and whole-class discussion, students deepen their understanding of core humanitarian principles such as neutrality, impartiality, and voluntary service. The Pumpkin Patch Field Trip Unit is part of my Field Trip Unit Series. The series was created with homeschoolers in mind, but can be adapted to be used in a classroom as well. Field trips are a great way to supplement learning, but often homeschoolers don’t get any background information on the location of their field trip and want to enrich their experience by expanding the learning at home before and after the trip. These units help give information and fun activities before and after the field trip.

These units are available in PreK/Kinder, Elementary, and Middle & High School levels. All Pumpkin Patch Field Trip Units follow the same outline and the parent/teacher info sheet is the same for all three so that if you have children of several ages, you can seamlessly teach them together. Students can begin independently reading right away! Just print, (maybe laminate), and cut! This resource is a handout that matches the slideshow for the same lesson. It is in an easy to print format and can be printed in black and white or color.

I like to give students a ready-to-go reading format after the lesson. I have also included a video of me reading to students so they can hear the pronunciation. This is a great homework assignment as students get input and do not have to worry about getting right or wrong answers. It works perfectly for the flipped classroom, homeschooling, or sub work.
