Word Meaning with Nonsense Words

Why teach word meaning through nonsense words (context clues only)?

• Students must use critical thinking to solve
• Students must read the whole passage for context clues

• They can't find the answer except through problem solving.

You came to the right place! I have been teaching for 5+ years, I have my Master's in Education with a focus on Literacy and I didn't know where to start.

So, I went back to everything I learned in my graduate program and re-read everything I could find.

I wrote & designed a student-engaging template to help students in my classroom to deeply internalize a word. I gathered key word lists when I didn't have a word from our daily reading, and thought about how to teach vocabulary so my love of etymology and words could be shared with my 10th graders. I've included all that and a guide to help other teachers get started with implementing and teaching vocabulary in THEIR classrooms.

WHY TEACH VOCABULARY EXPLICITLY?

Basic Video Editing in Adobe Premiere Pro gives students a step-by-step lesson to learn the basic skills needed for video editing: Adding and editing files, working with audio, creating titles, and rendering and saving your project. The lesson provides step-by-step instructions and also includes links to tutorials students can use as they need to complete the lesson. Students create a short project as they follow the mini-lessons and then demonstrate their learning through a short creative project at the end of the tutorials. This lesson was created for an 8th grade class, but is appropriate for any age group that are first time users of Adobe Premiere Pro.

Who doesn't love to travel? Engage students as they plan a vacation to their dream destination.

The “Plan a Vacation” project utilizes either MS Office (Word and Excel) or Google Apps/Workspace (Docs, Sheets) to allow students to build skills in those programs along with skills in Internet research, reading, writing and critical thinking. In these projects, students research a vacation destination of their choice and complete a research sheet using MS Word or Google Docs. They utilize either MS Excel or Google Sheets to create a budget for their trip, and finally create a tri-fold Travel Brochure using a choice of MS Word, Google Docs, or Canva (www.canva.com) to share information about their chosen destination. Full instructions and grading rubrics are provided for each portion of the project, along with a sample budget spreadsheet (and answer key), and a sample brochure. Links to tutorials for all programs are provided in the student resources section, and a Quick Start Guide for Canva is also included.

The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be adapted for younger or older students.

Materials Required

· Access to computers for each student (or pair of students) with Internet and either MS Office (Word, Excel) or Google Apps/Workspace (Docs, Sheets).

· Sample travel brochures (optional) for ideas on layout

This career unit gives students an introduction to the law, public safety, corrections and security career cluster and what a career in this field would be like. This is perfect for a career, technology, CTE or business class.

The included PowerPoint presentation can be used by the teacher for whole class instruction, or provided to the students electronically (or as a printout) for them to review individually. Students use close reading skills with a short informational passage to learn about the career field and answer questions to use critical thinking skills and demonstrate their understanding. Two different puzzles are included to learn different jobs in the career and to reinforce vocabulary skills. A technology based project comic creation project is included to allow students to use critical thinking and creativity to further explore the career field. A quick reference/tutorial is also included for StoryboardThat (free, no download needed). Additionally, a group legal case analysis project that can be completed without student computer access (by the teacher printing out the linked information) or providing access to a computer for each group to research is provided to simulate the career and allow students to utilize critical thinking skills and teamwork. Finally, a short reflection questionnaire gives students the opportunity to reflect and analyze their learning as they determine if this career field is of interest to them.

The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be used with high school students. The teacher can choose to use some or all of the provided lesson options included in this resource.

Learning about Typography: Kinetic Typography is a two-part lesson to give students an introduction to typography. This is perfect for a technology class that focuses on web design or graphic design, or for an art class. The first lesson lets students’ research information and terminology about typography in a WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt). Then, in part two, students work to create a kinetic typography project utilizing only fonts (no pictures) and syncing this to music using either Microsoft PowerPoint or Adobe After Effects. Learning about Design: Elements of Art, Shapes & Color is a three-part lesson to give students an introduction to design. This is perfect for a technology class that focuses on web design or graphic design, or for an art class. The first lesson has students create a PowerPoint (or Google Slides presentation) to define the Seven Elements of Art in their own words and give picture examples of three areas of design for each. Adobe Photoshop “iAm” Project gives students an opportunity to express their personality and interests as they create a silhouette from a picture of themselves showing off something that defines them. The lesson uses simple Adobe Photoshop techniques to learn the Pen Tool, work with backgrounds, layers and text.
