A Raisin In The Sun, Harlem, and Dreams synthesis Final Writing Assessment

By The Red-Haired Reader

This product can be used as a final assessment for A Raisin in the Sun. It requires students to synthesize the play and two Hughes poems by comparing the use of symbolism and the theme of the importance of dreams.

First, students will analyze "Harlem" and "Dreams" using the two foldables. Your students will fold the paper in half the long way, and cut along the black lines into the midline of the paper. They will end up with a long, skinny version of the poem on the front of the flaps, and analysis question inside. As they read the poem, they will peel back the flap to reveal questions that ask them to analyze the poem! I've attached my video that explains how to use foldables.

After the students analyze the poems, they're ready to write! The prompt asks them to synthesize all three texts by comparing e use of symbolism and the theme of the importance of dreams. I've included a comprehensive rubric so students are aware of the criteria, and teachers will be able to quickly and effective grade the final products!

"NECESSARY TO PROTECT OURSELVES" [UNIT DOCUMENTS & WORKSHEETS]

By Richard B Williams

This MALCOLM X's "NECESSARY TO PROTECT OURSELVES" product comes with several worksheets, 2 CIVIL/SOCIAL ISSUES Projects, Discussion Questions, and SUGGESTED USES. This product provides students a chance to experience what happens when we are displeased with our government and what he offers as a solution. This academic essay allows students to read and analyze this canonized work about fighting for our rights. 10th - 12th Graders will love this short work and product. Check it out!

SUMMARY:

Malcolm X gave the following TV interview in 1964, at time when violence against civil rights workers had escalated. Shocking images of protestors being beaten, clubbed, and tear-gassed had become staples of daily news coverage. Across the South, white supremacists tried to squelch the growing movement with murder, rifle attacks, bombings, and arson, crimes that frequently went unpunished. As attacks increased, many African Americans grew impatient with King’s nonviolent tactics, expressing anger that chilled white listeners.

This work prompts readers/citizens to change our communities, our societies, our world by politely defying our government.

This 10th - 12th grade canonized work allows students to understand the need for standing up for our rights when we feel we are treated unjustly by our own government.

This Product Includes:

1. 4 handouts related to the essay

2. Suggested Uses

3. 3 Lesson Worksheets

4. Black & White Version/Printables

5. 2 major civil/social PROJECTS
