This activity features a meaningful and inclusive escape room in which students tackle 5 Language Arts skills-based puzzles about the winter holidays: Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, and Diwali!

There is no wonder why escape rooms are so popular; they are highly engaging and encourage people to work together and think creatively in order to solve different puzzles... all while trying to beat the clock! This meticulously-crafted resource features all of the materials you need to conduct a full-length Winter Holidays Escape Room for ELA. Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task, but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. All tasks are Language Arts skills-based so that with this fun lesson, learning is not sacrificed. Your students will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize the higher order thinking skills they are applying in the playing of this game!

Where this lesson truly shines is its objective: to help students on their journey to becoming global citizens as they learn about the holidays of diverse cultures and religions around the world. Being more culturally aware has become increasingly important in a world that seems to be getting smaller as we get more connected. As we build relationships with people from other cultures and religions, it is necessary to have some perspective of where we are all coming from which ultimately helps us to acknowledge how much we have in common.

How does it work?

Your students are stuck in your classroom and cannot leave for vacation until they solve 5 challenging Language Arts skills-based tasks about Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali, and Christmas.

• Diwali Fun Facts: In the first task, students must read fun facts about Diwali, each demonstrating 1 of 6 comma rules. Students must match the fact with the comma rule. The code is revealed when cards are matched correctly.
• Hanukkah Lights: In the second task, students must perform a close reading of Hanukkah Lights by Philip M. Raskin (1880-1944) and answer multiple choice questions about the selection that when correct, reveal the code.
• Christmas 'Round the World: In the third task, students will read 8 fun facts about how Christmas is celebrated in different countries around the world and must identify the parts of speech of underlined words within the passages. When matched correctly, shaded boxes will reveal the third code.
• Kwanzaa Extravaganza: In the fourth task, students must correct commonly misspelled words a passage about the origins of Kwanzaa. Once complete, they must unscramble shaded boxes to reveal the fourth code.
• Pop Quiz: In the final task, students must use all that they have learned about Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali, and Christmas and fill out a crossword puzzle. Once complete, they must unscramble the circled letters to reveal their final code to escape!

Every year there's that ONE holiday toy that captures the hearts of kids and sends parents off to the store to grab the last one. This mini unit covers the history of Christmas toys through four decades (some of which you will remember!). The unit is divided into three parts and relies heavily on student research. The parts can be done at your own pace over the course of a week or over several weeks.

Part One

-Includes two reading passages, one about the history of holiday gift giving and one about the rise of the toy industry.

-Research Project: Students are given four worksheets, one for each of the decades (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s), and they must research toy trends for each decade

Part Two

-All of part two is in the included PowerPoint. This covers holiday advertising, starting with the early days of ads, through the department store catalog, and into modern television commercials.

-There are three links to toy commercials from the 70s, 80s, and 90s to watch with students

Part Three

-In part three, students will conduct an interview with an older friend or family member about their own holiday toy memories

-Final Project: Students pick one of three final projects to complete. Each project relates back to a different part of the unit.

This unit is geared towards a classroom, but is easily adapted to a homeschooler...in fact, I originally created it for mine! Every research activity is done solo and the PowerPoint can easily be used just for one or a handful of kiddos. This is also easily adaptable, in case you want to change anything for your students, but is no-prep, ready to go, as it is!

You will be fully prepared to teach about la Navidad and other Spanish winter holidays with these three fun, no-prep Spanish reading and vocabulary activities! These Navidad activities will work for any level of Spanish and will hold your students' attentions throughout the class period. These Christmas resources are the following:
