STUDENT GUIDELINES FOR USING THIS RESOURCE
After reading each figurative language example on the board, move to the side of the room labeled “Metaphor,” “Simile,” “Hyperbole,” or “Personification.” Be prepared to defend your choices. You may disagree with your classmates’ opinions but do so respectfully. (I typically go over each example with students and discuss the impact of the words or phrases to uncover the deeper meaning. Ask questions such as, "what is being compared?" or "what can the reader visualize?")
*As an optional follow-up activity, use my No-Prep Figurative Language Short Passage Set resource to assess individual understanding, homework, or assessment!
REFLECTION:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

ESL Nouns Sentence Builder Workbook for Newcomers

In this product, students will learn the English vocabulary word for the 54 different noun vocabulary words presented.
In the first workbook, students will be provided with 54 nouns that will be used to make up a simple sentence. The words are not in English word order. Students will then use the words to make a sentence in proper English word order.
In the second workbook, students will be provided with 54 nouns that will be used to make up a complex sentence. The words are not in English word order. Students will then use the words to make a sentence in proper English word order.
In the third workbook of the product, students will be provided with a sentence for each of the noun vocabulary words presented. Students will then be required to make up a sentence (simple or complex).
The word in English and a picture of the noun are included in this product in each of the three workbooks presented.

Sentence diagramming is so helpful when teaching students parts of speech and sentence structure. The repetitiveness of diagramming for a bell ringer is extremely beneficial for students. I tried grammar workbooks for years, but my students hardly retained anything. Daily sentence diagramming made them remember their parts of speech, and was an amazing foundation for my students to have when we started forming different types of sentences. They picked up on fixing run-ons quickly as well because of their diagramming foundation.

Halloween Collaborative Writing Activity

This resource features a creative lesson plan that will actually keep your candy-filled students quiet and engaged on Halloween!
Halloween Collaborative Story Time is a communal story-telling activity in which students practice using Freytag's Pyramid plot structure in their own narrative writing. In this activity, each student begins a story inspired by a unique Halloween-themed photograph. They are prompted to write the exposition of the tale by introducing the setting and main characters. After the allotted amount of time, the story is then passed to another student who is prompted to write the inciting incident or conflict and begin to detail the rising action. The paper is passed from student to student twice more until the story is resolved. When the stories are finished, the worksheet is returned to the original student who can then make edits and is responsible for producing a final draft.
With this intrinsically engaging activity, each student has the chance to tap into their creativity while applying knowledge of the 7 steps of Freytag's Pyramid. It is a great activity to introduce or reinforce the plot diagram and is IDEAL for Halloween as it is so fun for students, yet designed as a nice quiet activity, regardless of the sugar rush! Since the lesson runs itself, it is also great for a substitute or on those days when you need a quick plan to get you through the day. I trust you will find that your students will ask for this activity again and again!

- 1 blank worksheet so that you may include your own picture or photograph
Be aware that while every photograph is entirely school-appropriate, due to the scary nature of the pictures (ghosts, zombies, goblins) it is recommended for use for students in eighth grade and above. Make sure to examine all photographs prior to use in your classroom - you know what is best for your students.
