This Figurative Language Short Passage Set is a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. This is a 210-word passage filled with 19 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This figurative language passage set is rigorous, uses higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing.

Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

The graphic novel, Act by Kayla Miller is great for children ages 8 - 14, as they can relate with the characters. My students enjoyed this book because it is a book about friendship, being mature, supporting your friends, being a good sport, leader, etc., and solving problems with friends and in life. This book does not have chapters, so comprehension questions were separated by pages. Therefore, written comprehension skills are emphasized while reading. At the end of this product, there are a variety of short answer writing prompts to choose from.

The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and a few example sentences are presented in the packet. As the book is being read aloud, as students are reading the book or after the book has been read, students can answer the comprehension questions in this packet.

Twelfth Night incorporates many classic elements of comedic theater. The Berenstain Bears Don't Pollute Anymore Comprehension Questions product is useful for students that read the book. The questions are placed in order with the book. Students can answer these questions as the book is read or after they have finished reading the book or listening to the book. While reading this book and answering these questions, students will learn about pollution, endangered animals, surviving in our environment, importance of clean air, water, and healthy soil to grow food, planting trees when trees are cut down, ecology, conservation, recycling, reducing pollution in your community, things to recycle, and how to help your environment. In this packet, students can also complete a mini endangered animal report where they will be required to chose an endangered animal from the list provided and answer questions about that animal, such as where it lives (habitat), what it eats, how long it lives for, interesting facts about that animal, etc. Students can answer the short answer questions, yes/no questions, multiple choice questions, and vocabulary/picture labeling questions as the book is read to them, as they read the book independently or they can use the text for lookbacks once the book is finished. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and examples of the words used in sentences are presented. Students have the opportunity to use those words in sentences as well.

Guided Reading is a research-based instruction process whereby the teacher works with small grouping of students being equal in a particular reading achievement level. The teacher provides for each reader's development of effective reading competencies. However different than in the earlier days of reading groups, small and temporary groups are flexible and dynamic. The observance and evaluation of the progress of readers are done by teachers on a systematic basis. Thus, grouping and regrouping students is based on the strengths of students and the intense changing needs throughout their reading development.

In the 1960s in New Zealand, Guided Reading was developed. It was enhanced over the years after it arrived in the United States thanks to educators like Gay Su Pinnell and Lesley Fountas. In 1996, Fountas & Pinnell published their enormously influential book, Guided Reading: Good First Teaching for All Children (Heinemann). This book changed how reading was taught, and it is still taught today to over a million teachers worldwide. The aim of Guided Reading lessons is to develop effective readers.

A set of 13 books is bundled together with all 13 worksheets of the Guided Reading series for grades KG-12. There are lesson plans and different activities for every grade, with the answers in the end section of the worksheet.

The 2007 movie, Nancy Drew makes a connection with both the older and modern Nancy Drew novels. Students can see Nancy Drew in action when watching the movie, after reading the book series. The movie is similar to the book series in that it discusses problem solving skills, following rules, working together, and being a good friend. The comprehension questions in this product relate with the movie as well as students own experiences. Students can also write sentences uses unknown vocabulary words in sentences. Students can answer these comprehension questions as they watch the movie or after they have finished the movie.
