*******************************
DESCRIPTION
Students always need additional support in mastering the skill of inferencing. You can use these four sets of 16 Novel Multiple-Choice Inference Task Cards to help students practice making inferences.
Students do NOT need any background knowledge (or need to have read the books) to answer these Inference Multiple-Choice Questions! The passages were carefully selected, so students can make general inferences whether they have read the books or not. :-)
*******************************
EACH OF THE SIX NOVELS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
Task Cards and Task Card ANSWER KEYS (and Student Answer Sheet)
The first set of Inference Task Cards for each novel consists of a short selection/passage from the book followed by an inference-based question. There are four multiple choice answers that students choose from. Students read the passage and choose the correct answer. Students will need to pay close attention to details to choose the correct answer. The inference questions are centered around character traits, character relationships, and situations.
The second set of 16 Inference Task Cards for each novel is the actual “Answer Key” set of the first set of Task Cards. The Task Card Answer Keys highlight the correct multiple-choice answer in the color red and highlights relevant evidence that supports the correct answer in the color yellow.
This is engaging practice for your students as it is perfect for mini-lessons, whole class instruction, cooperative learning, intervention groups, literacy centers, and small group instruction.
Inference Tests and ANSWER KEYS (Print and Digital)
Inference Graphic Organizer (Print and Digital)
Inference Bookmarks
Suggestions on how you can use the Multiple-Choice Inference Task Cards:
1. Quiz or Test - You can make a copy of the set of Task Cards and distribute to each student as a quiz or test. You, as the teacher , can then select the Task Card Inference question that students performed the lowest on and use that to review and develop/modify your instruction.
2. Small Group Instruction - You can have students engage in small group instruction where you provide additional support on the skill of inferencing. These Inference Task Cards will support that type of instruction. You can have all students in small groups practice with the same inference task card question number or you can distribute 1-2 Task Cards to each student to practice, then review.
3. Mini Lesson - You can load these Inference Task Cards on the Smartboard and use them to demonstrate how to make an inference. They can also be used to discuss the importance of details and how they are used to encourage inferential thinking. You can even use these Task Cards to discuss the difference between relevant details and irrelevant details. Finally, you can use these Inference Task Cards during the guided practice portion of your lesson.
4. Formative Assessment / Exit Slips - These Inference Task Cards make a great, quick formative assessment! You can easily check for understanding by distributing 1-2 Task Cards to each student to complete. You can circulate the room to do a "Quick Check" to see if students "Got it." You can also use these Task Cards as Exit Slips by distributing 1-2 Task Cards to each student to complete and hand in to you before they leave.
5. Partner Study - You can have students pair up and “test each other.” Partners not only ask each other to choose the correct multiple-choice answer, but to highlight or underline specific details in the selection/passage to support their inference-based answer. The Answer Key set of Task Cards are helpful in the sense that students can take ownership of reviewing the correct answers and sharing that with their partners**.**
6. Test Prep Review - You can use these Task Cards to review how to answer multiple-choice questions. You can also use these cards to teach students a variety of multiple-choice strategies (process of elimination, context clues, textual evidence, tone, etc.) to help them select the right answers to questions and aid comprehension.

LET'S CONNECT:
By Rigorous Resources for High School English
This 90-page EDITABLE unit has everything you'll need for profoundly stimulating lessons on Frederick Douglass's Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass! Invite your class to engage in student-driven discussions without compromising on intellectual rigor. The daily quizzes, discussion questions, exercises on literary devices, and writing assignment will challenge your students to dig beneath the surface of the text and unlock profound interpretive insights!
Hold your students accountable for completing the nightly homework by beginning every class with a quick vocabulary and reading quiz. Challenge students to explicate textual details using a wide range of interpretive lenses: formalist, historicist, feminist, psychoanalytic, etc. Facilitate dynamic discussions that inspire students to arrive at a whole new depth of insight!!
Everything you’ll need to teach Douglass's memoir is included in this 90-page bundle:
• Unit & Pacing Guide: Suggestions for how to pace the reading homework and organize the classwork for Douglass's Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. (2 pages)
• Discussion Questions: Fifteen pages of higher-order discussion questions guaranteed to inspire profoundly thoughtful class discussions! This unit features double-sided handouts with 8-10 discussion questions for each section of Douglass's Narrative! The discussion questions are the beating heart of this curriculum. Every question is grounded in concrete textual details and challenges students to think critically about their significance. They challenge students to build interpretive arguments that require the support of carefully selected textual evidence — leading to keen interpretive insights! Guaranteed to foster deep thinking and dynamic discussions! (15 pages)
• Discussion Questions ANSWER KEYS: The answer keys to the discussion questions are informed by cutting-edge scholarship by professors who specialize in African-American literature and especially Frederick Douglass: Henry Louis Gates, Saidiya Hartman, Fred Moten, David Blight, etc. Of course, there is rarely a single "correct" answer for any question; rather, the discussions questions are made up of higher-order questions designed to foster lively exchanges and interpretive debates among students. They challenge students to build interpretive arguments supported by carefully selected textual evidence. (35 pages)
• Vocabulary Lists: Lists of 10-12 vocabulary words for every section of the book, complete with definitions and sample sentences with each word as used in Douglass's Narrative. A total of over 60 SAT-worthy words. (5 pages)
• Vocabulary & Reading Quizzes: Build students’ vocabularies while holding them accountable for the nightly reading homework. Each quiz contains 7 questions on vocabulary words plus another 3 questions on reading comprehension. Grading these quizzes is simple and quick. They’re an easy way to log an additional 5 grades into your gradebook. Answer key included. (10 pages)
• Literary Devices Quiz: This quiz challenges students to identify the literary devices used in thirty quotations from Douglass's memoir_._ The literary devices include metaphor, simile, hyperbole, personification, apostrophe, allusion, and more. This bundle also features a glossary with definitions of the literary devices as well as examples of how each device is used in Douglass's memoir — so you can review the devices with students before they tackle the quiz. The quiz can be used either for assessment or as a fun refresher. Answer key included. (5 pages)
• Academic Scholarship: Excerpts from scholarly articles and monographs focused on specific scenes from Douglass's memoir. (1 page)
• Writing Assignment: Challenge students to take their interpretations one step further by writing an analytical paper on Douglass's powerful memoir. Let students choose amongst 5 thought-provoking sample topics — or invite them to develop an original topic of their own. Writing schedule included. Rubric included. (5 pages)
• Poetry Pairing: Seven thematically relevant poems by three twentieth-century African-American poets: Robert Hayden, Lucille Clifton, and Natasha Trethewey. (9 pages)
This unit is filled with dozens of visual images that shed light on important scenes from Douglass's memoir: illustrations from early editions of Douglass's memoir, documentary photographs of antebellum plantations, lyrics from the slave song that motivated Douglass to liberate himself, the masthead of Douglass's abolitionist newspaper, etc. But what really distinguishes this curriculum is how the discussion starters and writing prompts deepen students' thinking and help them arrive at profound interpretive insights!
This resource packet will come to you in two separate formats: Word docs *and* PDFs. Because the Word docs are editable, you'll be able to customize them to suit your teaching style and/or the skill levels of your students — year after year! If you don't have Microsoft Word, you'll still be able to use the PDF version — which is easy to navigate and quick to print!
Finally, I believe that teachers should be able to see what they'll be getting before they purchase. So the preview for this resource provides direct access to dozens of actual pages from the unit. Click on the green “preview” button to see exactly what you’ll get...

French Pronouns Skill Drill - Listening Comprehension and Speaking Practice
By Love Learning Languages - French Resources
Looking for a new way to drill French pronouns? This resource includes 50 sentences to improve listening and speaking skills when using direct and indirect object pronouns and the adverbial pronouns Y and EN. Check out the preview to take a closer look.
Some negation and double pronouns are used, and this activity includes the following tenses:
This is a 24 minute MP3 audio recording of 50 sentences to be restated or written by your students using a pronoun or double pronouns. Each sentence is read twice before time is given for student responses, then the answer is given. You will appreciate the differences in the voices used in this recording. There are three different voices, all native speakers.
I've included five different ways that you can use this pronoun audio drill (see below). Suitable for core, immersion and homeschool curriculums. This drill is fantastic practice for the AP exam.
This resource is included in my advanced French growing bundle.
What's included?
1. Language lab or classroom listening and speaking exercise
Students listen to the drill either as a class or with individual headphones on. They will hear a sentence read twice by two different speakers. The number of pronouns to be used in each sentence is indicated in the recording. After the second reading of the sentence students are given time to say their answer before the correct response is pronounced. The sentences are purposefully not numbered in the recording so that you can choose to do them either in or out of order. This is a listening and speaking grammar drill and writing the answers is not necessarily encouraged.
2. Language lab or classroom silent written exercise
Provide each student with a numbered answer recording sheet. Students should be reminded to pay close attention as the sentences in the recording are NOT numbered. The sentences that are read in the recording are written on the student response sheet and words to be replaced by pronouns are underlined. Since this is a fast moving exercise you may want to give students a chance to revise their answers once the recording has stopped.
3. Whiteboard classroom activity - Individual or paired work
Have students write sentences using pronouns on whiteboards after they’ve heard the sentence spoken twice. Pause the recording and give students time to write their answers. When they’ve finished have them listen carefully and check their work when you stop pause and play the answer. This works particularly well with pairs of students because they can help each other and the work won’t seem so tedious. I often allow my pairs of students to keep track of one point per correct answer and at the end of the activity see which group has the most points.
4. Bell ringer activity
You have and extra five or ten minutes at the beginning or end of class, why not play a few minutes of the pronoun drill? With 50 sentences to choose from you could keep it quite varied.
5. Group writing game
Chances are you have your students’ desks in some kind of rows or groups. Here’s a fun way to change up the pronoun drill a bit. Let’s say you have rows or groups of five students. Before starting the drill recording give the first person in each group a blank sheet of paper and he should have something to write with.
Number the paper 1 - 5 (or the number of students in the group) and as you play the drill the first student has to write his answer next to #1. He has to write something even if he doesn’t know exactly how to spell it. Immediately after the answer is pronounced on the recording he must pass the paper to the next person in his group. It’s important not to hesitate because the recording will continue.
Person #2 records his answer and so on until each person in the group has had a go. At this point, stop the recording and the last person in each group brings the paper back up to the first person who can look over all of the answers written by his group members. He can make any changes he wants to make to anyone’s answer BUT STUDENTS CANNOT SPEAK A WORD TO EACH OTHER.
He then passes the paper back down the row and everyone gets a chance to change either his own or another group member’s answer. They should move fast though because here’s the catch, the first group to turn in a 100% accurate paper to the teacher wins that round!

The Fall of the House of Usher Activity Bundle
By Language Arts Excellence
This resource features a bundle of all of our lesson plans, materials, and activities for Edgar Allan Poe's tale of the original haunted house, The Fall of the House of Usher. Each product is thoughtfully crafted and allows students to think outside the box by delving deeply into the story's themes, characters, vocabulary, and plot development. Lessons have all been classroom-tested and allow for differentiation while encouraging optimal student engagement. This activity bundle provides a week's worth of material to bring the story to life!
Included in this Bundle:
The Fall of the House of Usher Literature Guide: This resource features a comprehensive Common Core-aligned literature guide for use while reading the story. The packet provides an excellent basis for comprehension and vocabulary acquisition for the short story and encourages students to think critically about Poe's use of literary elements, figurative language, plot elements, and symbolism. Also included is a creative "Snap Chat!" activity that will bring the story to life in the 21st century. A full answer key is provided along with two bonus student-tested lesson plans. The wide range of activities in this guide will keep your students engaged in this difficult story and help them to gain a deep understanding of one of the most shocking tales of American literature.
The Fall of The House of Usher Anticipation Guide and Lesson Plan (also included within Literature Guide): This resource features an anticipation guide for the story and a detailed lesson plan that I believe is the absolute best way to approach a new story. Using a non-intimidating method called "Numbered Heads", this activity will get your students thinking, writing, conversing, and reporting about themes you will be encountering during your study of The Fall of the House of Usher and your overall Poe unit. This lesson is particularly useful for Poe's tale which can be difficult for students to understand at first. I am confident that your students will enjoy this thoughtful, engaging activity and beg you to begin reading Poe's tale of the most haunted of houses!
The Fall of the House of Usher ESCAPE ROOM: This meticulously-crafted resource features all of the materials you need to conduct a full-length Escape Room for The Fall of the House of Usher. Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task (and it is!), but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. It is the perfect activity for Halloween, Poe's Death Day on October 7, or any day you want to shake it up with your students without sacrificing learning. Your students will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize the higher order thinking skills they are applying in the playing of this game!
The Fall of the House of Usher Socratic Seminar: This resource features lesson plans and materials to conduct a formal set of Socratic Seminars for The Fall of the House of Usher. Socratic Seminars (or "Fish Bowl" Conversations as referred to in this resource) are higher order ways of assessing whether your students are able to understand and react to your class texts. These seminars rely on the power of inquiry and allow students to take the lead in their learning and discussion. The only problem? They require a great deal of preparation. Fortunately, this student-tested resource includes everything you need to conduct a structured and formal set of Socratic Seminars in your classroom surrounding The Fall of the House of Usher... and no preparation is required by you at all.
