• Shakespearean Insult Generator: Shakespeare's characters are exceptionally creative in their elaboration of insults. Indeed, some scholars have suggested that the insults in Shakespeare's plays amount to their own education in wit. If your students are sufficiently mature, you could use this exercise to invite them to generate their own original Shakespearean insults. (2 pages)

Summary:

Naomi Shihab Nye (born March 12, 1952, St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.) is a Palestinian American poet, children’s author, essayist, and educator whose work often revolves around her upbringing and experiences as an Arab American.

Naomi Shihab was born to a Palestinian father and an American mother in St. Louis, Missouri. She and her family moved to Jerusalem, her father’s home city, when she was 14 to care for her ailing paternal grandmother. Amid the tensions that would escalate into the Six-Day War of 1967, the family relocated to San Antonio, Texas, after only a year abroad. In 1974 she graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio with degrees in English and world religions. She subsequently married photographer Michael Nye.

This 9th - 12th grade canonized poem allows students to understand life, the past, and their world.

There is no wonder why escape rooms are so popular; they are highly engaging and encourage people to work together and think creatively in order to solve different puzzles... all while trying to beat the clock! This meticulously-crafted resource features all of the materials you need to conduct a full-length Escape Room for The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe. Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task (and it is!), but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. It is the perfect activity for Halloween or any day you want to shake it up with your students without sacrificing learning. Your students will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize the higher order thinking skills they are applying in the playing of this game!

How does it work?

In this escape room, students will try to escape out of the insane narrator's house of horrors by solving 5 different skills-based puzzles, discovering a hidden message, and finding clues along the way.

• In the first task, students must order the plot events of The Tell-Tale Heart on Freytag's Pyramid. Once solved, corresponding letters reveal the first code.
• In the second task, students must identify 7 types of figurative language within the short story. Highlighted boxes in the correct answers will reveal the code.
• In the third task, students must solve a crossword puzzle with questions about literary elements of the story. Circled boxes on the crossword once unscrambled will reveal the code.
• In the fourth task, students must fill in the blanks with vocabulary words from The Tell-Tale Heart. When matched correctly, shaded boxes will reveal the code.
• In the fifth and final task, students must discover the hidden message (a quote from The Tell-Tale Heart) using clues they collected during the first four tasks. When they write them in the correct order on a scroll and bring it to you, they can finally escape the room.

Euripides' Medea highlights a powerful witch and magician herself. She fell in love with Jason when he came to Colchis with the Argonauts to steal the Golden Fleece from her father. In fact, Medea was so in love that she betrayed her family and abandoned her homeland, helping Jason steal the Golden Fleece and then running away with him to Greece.

Though she was highly devoted, Medea could also be dangerous and overbearing. She went to extreme lengths to help Jason, killing her own brother and later brutally murdering Jason’s uncle Pelias for stealing Jason’s throne. Despite all this, Jason eventually left Medea to marry another woman. Medea used her skills to take revenge on Jason. Did her revenge go too far?

Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task, but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. Your students will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize the higher order thinking skills they are applying in the playing of this game!

How does it work?

Instead of coming into your room this morning, your students have traveled all the way to Venice to visit their dear friend Othello. As they spend time with him, he becomes increasingly agitated, anxious, and paranoid. His friend Iago circles around his ear and Othello finally admits that he believes his beloved wife is having an affair. When he mentions plans of plucking his very special rose for good, it is time for your students to step in and save Desdemona! The only way to escape the room and save Des is by solving 5 different skills-based puzzles, discovering a hidden message, and finding clues along the way.

• Plot it Out: In the first task, students must order the major plot points of Othello on Freytag's Pyramid. When ordered correctly, letters in the shaded boxes on the chart form their first code.
• Guess Who: In the second task, students must match each character from Othello with their description by drawing a line connecting them. Letters not intersected by these lines will form their second code word.
• Criss-Cross: In the third task, students must complete a crossword puzzle about major plot points, characters, setting, and quotes from the play. Circled letters within the crossword, once unscrambled, reveal the code.
• Say What: In the fourth task, students must match notable quotes with the characters who said them. When cards are matched correctly, the fourth code is revealed.
• Hidden Message: In the fifth and final task, students must discover a hidden message (a notable quote from Othello) using clues from the first four tasks and answer the final question.
