Foldable Poetic Element Analysis of Woodstock by Joni Mitchell

This product will allow your students to easily understand and analyze the poetic elements in Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" by breaking it down line-by-line!
Instruct your students to fold the paper in half the long way, and to cut along the black lines into the midline of the paper. They will end up with a long, skinny version of the poem on the front of the flaps, and analysis question inside.
As they read the poem, they will peel back the flap to reveal questions that ask them to analyze the song lyrics for theme, symbolism, characterization, allusion, format, simile, and metaphor.

Counting Descent by Clint Smith: Theme Tracking sheet + Socratic Seminars!

Are you looking for an interactive, student-led activity and assessment for Clint Smith's Counting Descent? Look no further!
This product includes 2 different assignments:
1. 'During Reading' Theme Tracking Sheet
2. 'After Reading' Socratic Seminar Discussion
The tracking sheet presents students with 4 themes they will track throughout the course of 10 poems . I usually have my students do this with a partner. It's up to you if you want to assign them a theme to focus on, or just let them choose their 10 favorite poems to analyze.
After they've read and analyzed the text, they'll prep for the Socratic Seminar! I usually use this as my final assessment.
You'll see two different packets of Socratic Seminar packets- packet A and packet B. Each packet contains three different discussion questions that require students to answer and provide two quotes from the text to back up their answers. Students are also required to come up with three additional questions they will ask if there’s time in their seminar. Finally, the packet has a page where each student will monitor a partner in the opposite circle. They will make a check each time their partner speaks, and paraphrase meaningful comments their partner makes. The file also contains a rubric for you to use while your students are discussing!
When you print out the file, you’ll see packet A on the top half of the sheet, packet B on the bottom half, and then the rubric as the last page of the file. Remove the rubric and print one out for each of your students. Copy the rest of the pages, cut them in half, and staple them. Each student will receive one half-sheet booklet; packet A or packet B.
Give your students adequate time to plan for their Seminar! I usually give them a full class period (40 minutes for me), but you could have them do it for homework, or over the course of a few days. The day of the Seminar, you’ll assign partners with opposite packets. Let A discuss for as long as they need (usually 30-ish minutes for me!), then flip-flop your circles and have B discuss afterwards.
My students LOVE Socratic Seminars! I have found the fishbowl discussion format works much better when you give each group three different questions so you don’t hear the same discussion two times, which is how this product is set up. I have used Socratic Seminars in small literature circle groups, as well as with the whole class at once. Please ask if you have questions!
Marrying the Hangman by Margaret Atwood chunked text analysis with answers

I've included the full text of the piece on the left side of the doc and chunked it to correspond to 17 analysis questions on the right. Students will answer questions on symbolism, point of view, narrative voice, imagery, direct address, use of rhetorical questions, figurative language, characterization, syntax, word choice, and themes of power and gender. An answer key is included for your convenience.

This Google Doc is ready-to-go to help your students analyze Wilfred Owen's "Disabled"! You can print it or post it to Google Classsroom!
This product is a 3-columned chart. On the left, you'll find the full text of the poem broken down by stanza. The middle column has poetry analysis questions. The right gives students a place to answer each question.
The 14 questions address diction, imagery, figurative language, characterization, theme, tone, symbolism, foreshadowing, and plot.
I've included a suggested answer key for your convenience at the bottom of the doc.
Love Poems Poetry Analysis Question Trail Secondary English Valentine's Day!

This is an interactive partner or small group activity that will have students up and moving throughout the room in order to answer 15 questions about poetic devices in 15 different modern and classic LOVE POEMS!
The product contains 15 multiple questions that have 4 answer choices. You will hang these signs around your classroom. Based on their answer, the students will be directed to another question. If the students make a mistake, they have to retrace their footsteps and find the question(s) they answered incorrectly. Each group/ pair will start at a different question, and the kids will "follow the trail" of questions throughout your room.
Poetic devices and techniques that are analyzed in the questions include: tone, figurative language, diction, syntax, rhyme, characterization, gist, author's purpose, paradox, enjambment, repetition, and anaphora.
Questions are asked about excerpts from the following poems:
Sara Teasdale's "I Am Not Yours"
Shakespeare's Sonnet 116
Shakespeare's Sonnet 130
Percy Bysshe Shelley's "Love's Philosophy"
Lord Byron's "She Walks in Beauty"
Sonia Sanchez's Haiku [for you]”

Robert Burns' "A Red, Red Rose"
E.E. Cummings' "[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]"
Edgar Allan Poe's "Annabel Lee"
Pablo Neruda's “Don’t Go Far Off, Not Even For A Day”
Anne Bradstreet's "To My Dear and Loving Husband"
Judith Viorst's "True Love"
Luís Vaz De Camões' “Love is a fire that burns unseen”
Elizabeth Barrett Browning's “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways”
Also included is an answer sheet for students to record their answers as well as an answer key for the teacher.

To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time by Robert Herrick Foldable Poetry Analysis

This product will allow your students to easily understand and analyze Robert Herrick's To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time" by breaking it down line-by-line!
Instruct your students to fold the paper in half the long way, and to cut along the black lines into the midline of the paper. They will end up with a long, skinny version of the poem on the front of the flaps and analysis question inside.
As they read the poem, they will peel back the flap to reveal questions that ask them to analyze the poem's format, tone, diction, theme, rhyme scheme, and figurative language. An answer key is included for your convenience!
This product is perfect for your students' interactive notebooks, as an in-class activity, or for homework. The activity would be appropriate for accelerated middle school or high school classes.
