By Geography & Math Made Easy
Looking for a cool topic to teach your students about? Why not dive into the fascinating world of the Panama Canal and its infrastructure? NAFTA & The U.S./Mexico Border
By Sarah Austin
This lesson is based on my own personal experience as a participant on a USA-Mexico border tour project organized by Rethinking Schools & Global Exchange that provided first-hand experience and knowledge concerning the effects of U.S. foreign policy, such as NAFTA, on the lives of ordinary people who reside in the Tijuana area. Students will be prompted to delve far beyond the mainstream explanation that answers the critical question as to why people cross the U.S.-Mexico border. This lesson will have students examine the broader context, and underlying factors to this question, which intimately tie itself to Mexico's agricultural economy. Students will identify the causal puzzle pieces, and then create a ‘LOOP’ (web) diagram that will serve to demonstrate their understandings of how these underlying causes interconnect with one another. Materials: • One 50 Slide PowerPoint • Grading Rubrics • Student Loop Diagram Examples • Printable Handouts: 1) Handout #1- Power-Point Guided Notes 2) Handout #2- The U.S.-Mexico Border Puzzle Pieces If you liked this lesson see the 'BUNDLE unit lesson' here: NAFTA & the U.S. Mexico Border Bundle I OFTEN PROVIDE FREEBIES TO MY FOLLOWERS AND ALL NEW PRODUCTS DEBUT AT 20% OFF: • Look for the green star next to my store logo at the top right corner of this page and click it to become a follower. Geography: The Forgotten Pan American Highway of the Americas
By Geography & Math Made Easy
Most Americans don’t even know the Pan-American Highway exists.
The lesson begins with a short introductory PowerPoint presentation that gains students' interest in the highway. Students will work together in cooperative groups or individually to learn about the longest highway in the Western Hemisphere, that has ultimately been forgotten. They will trace the route through an interactive reading activity. Students will then work together to plan a road trip along the highway along the Pan American Highway, stopping at 14 different destinations along the route.
Starting in Alaska and stretching to Argentina, this is the Western Hemisphere’s longest highway. (Relative Location) Studying the Pan-American Highway in geography is essential for understanding the interconnectedness of the North and South American continents.
The Pan-American Highway spans over 19,000 miles. It is the longest road in the world. By examining the highway’s route, geographers gain insight into diverse landscapes, climates, and cultures. (Place: Physical Characteristics) This helps us appreciate the geographical features that shape the regions it traverses. It also reveals how human activities have influenced the environment. (Human-Environment Interaction)
Moreover, the Pan-American Highway plays a crucial role in facilitating trade and commerce between countries in the Americas. (Movement of goods and services) It serves as a major transportation artery, connecting economies and promoting economic growth in the region. Studying the highway provides valuable insights into the patterns of trade and migration within the Americas. (Movement of people and ideas) It also uncovers the challenges and opportunities from its construction and maintenance. Understanding the highway’s significance in globalization and regional integration helps geographers. This is an amazing route to study running through North America, Central America, and South America.

Geography & Government Types: Hitler's Olympics of 1936 Propaganda (PowerPoint)
By Geography & Math Made Easy
Hitler used the 1936 Olympics for government propaganda purposes.
The PowerPoint uses posters created by the Germand and focuses on how propaganda techniques were implemented such as using symbols hidden within the images.
Following World War I, Germany was in economic, political, and physical ruins. In 1933, Adolf Hitler became Chancellor and began his quiet quest against anyone who was not Arian. In 1931, Germany was given the option of hosting the 1936 Olympics. Hilter, under his Nazi German totalitarian dictatorship government system, wasn't sure it was a good idea until he was convinced that they could build the largest stadium to be seen at the Olympics and make Germany look as if it was not in ruin. He agreed. The 1936 Olympics were different from the Olympics in the past. It incorporated theatre, high-tech equipment for the games, and wonderful production with a lot of rituals that would continue into the Olympic games after Hitler's Olympics.
Hitler kept the secret of his war against the Jews throughout the two weeks of the Olympics using propaganda to show the world how well Germany was doing; the world, however, had no idea what was in store for Germany and the Jews who lived within its borders.

Not only are these geography warm-up activity bell ringers for the beginning of class great transitions to start class and get students mentally ready for class, but it's also a great way to work in time for state test prep activities without all the extra work**.** Many of the social studies test questions require students to read, examine, and analyze maps, charts, graphs, etc. I have used bell ringers for years and I have seen an increase in students' abilities to read maps, graphs, and charts. It's worth your time and theirs!
This third set of bell ringers asks students to use their class atlases to read maps, graphs, and charts such as map projections, climate maps, time zone maps, population pyramids, and more. Although they are specified for the first six weeks, they can be used at any time throughout the year. The atlas used for reference is the Rand McNally 6th Edition found on Amazon for $15 found here. But many atlases can be used and are more affordable here. If you use another atlas, simply modify each slide to reference the map or page in the atlas you are using. The questions can remain the same.
THESE CAN BE USED WITH THE GEOJOURNAL TEMPLATE FOUND HERE.
Many educators struggle with the task of figuring out how to start class each day or how to transition from concept to concept. Due to the nature of switching class to class, students often struggle to mentally prepare to transition to a different subject. A popular solution to these problems is the idea of the beginning of the class warm-up bellringers. These start-of-class activities benefit both students and teachers.
A bell ringer, often referred to as a warm-up activity or a do-now, is a short exercise or prompt given to students at the beginning of class. These activities are designed to capture students' attention, activate prior knowledge, and set the tone for the rest of the lesson.
Note: Answers are in the presentation notes section within each slide.

These first set of bell ringers ask students to use their class atlases to read maps, graphs, and charts such as map projections, climate maps, time zone maps, population pyramids, and more.
Due to nature of switching class to class, students often struggle to mentally prepare to transition to a different subject.
