Using the books "'Slowly, Slowly, Slowly' said the Sloth" by Eric Carle and "Freeda the Cheetah" by JTK Belle, explore fast vs. slow tempo. Using the song "Slowly, Slowly, Slowly" have the students move like a sloth to the music. Explore various ways a sloth would move. Ask which animals move quickly and introduce "Freeda the Cheetah" and have them run and drop when the chant says to do so. Additional rhyming and tempo worksheets reinforce the tempo and rhyming words. Can be used and adapted for multiple grade levels.

This lesson combines both books to demonstrate loud and soft sounds. Begin by talking about various sounds that can be made and then introduce "Quiet as a Mouse". Have the students quietly chant along as the mouse grows more frustrated that no one will play with it. Then go on to "Suki The Very Loud Bunny" to demonstrate loud sounds. Have the children move and play along with the chant. Use the rhythm and beat chart for the first book to explain rhythm vs. steady beat, as well as show that rests get a beat as well. Use the worksheet attached as a paper or digital activity through Easel. Also great to decode chants for rhythm syllables. Adaptable for grades PreK-2nd grade.

Need a slow tempo lesson using a book? Used up the more popular books? Try this lesson set to the book "Slow Samson" by Bethany Christou. Every time that you read "Samson was slow", have the children sing the song or chant the rhyme that goes with the lesson. Feel free to have students move slowly to the song as well. Get your class on beat! Included are 6 background tracks with ethnic flair -- tablas, djembes, bongos, and more ethnic percussion from Asia, India, and South America. The 6 tracks are at approximately 120bpm and also have a faster 142bpm just in case you want to get things really moving! (12 tracks total) I use these in my class for Orff, Boomwhacker, Rhythm Sticks, Dancing, Movement, or singing activities. The tracks go for about 2 minutes each and there's about 18 minutes worth of drum music in the ZIP file Have fun!

Use this lesson created for this new book "Snow?" to practice 6/8 time while students, review ta, ti-ti and rest rhythms with the chant that is included, and play along on Orff instruments! In a competitive solfege syllable naming game, you can practice your do-re-mi while getting out a little energy with your students! In Throw Re Mi, students will be split into groups (boys vs girls, colors vs colors, teams vs teams, however you wish) and one representative will stand in front of the whiteboard to represent their team. They will both use one suction cup ball to play the game (can be found at the dollar store or Target for a few bucks!)

They will be shown a solfege hand sign and see two or three corresponding circles above the hand sign. One of those circles will be the correct syllable (DO or RE, MI or TI, FA or LA, etc) -- encourage your students to throw their ball to the correct answer... whoever gets it the fastest wins (advance it to the next slide to reveal the answer in blue)

Also included is in an advanced round, called Throw Re Mi - Remix where it's flipped. The solfege hand signs will be on the top and the syllable on the bottom!

Use the chant or lullaby to help the bear feel better! Chant or sing this extension to the popular book "Bear Feels Sick" by Karma Wilson. Talk to the children prior to starting about what being a caring and good friend means and that friends help each other when they are sick. Then introduce the chant or song to the children and sing after every time that the says the bear feels sick. Use the rhythm chart to decode the rhythms and discover quarter rests. Use the song to listen and decode for the do solfege syllable. Adaptable for PreK-2nd grade.

Reviewing solfege with your kids? This may be the game format you're looking for!

An authentic jeopardy game board with categories for "Give me a Hand", "Take a Look", "Scale it!", and "Extended Solfege" on the title slide. Students can elect to pick $200, $400, $600, $800, or $1000 answers. After clicking on the amount, the answer will appear on the next slide.

Give me a Hand - A description of the hand sign and students will have to guess which syllable
Take a Look - Students will see the sign and have to guess which syllable
Scale it - The following and preceding notes in the solfege scale

Extended Solfege - Lowered and raised versions of common solfege

A text answer will first be visible, but if you advance the animation, the solfege sign/syllable will enter the slide if your kids need a hint. Students (keeping in true Jeopardy! fashion) can answer in the form of a question

"What is a Do?"

"What is a Ti?"

"What is La?"

Using the book "Bear Can't Sleep" from the Bear Series, teach quarter rest and ostinato while lulling the bear to sleep! Use a bear puppet and have children sing and play while encouraging the bear to fall asleep. Adaptable for grades PreK-2nd grade with options of either a song or chant. In "Twos Company" students will see two 4-beat rhythmic examples on the powerpoint and will split amongs their peers as a duet and read the rhythms down, with instruments, vocalizing, or however you please!

Students can be the "1" part or the "2" part or you can call individuals to sight read, or split it up any way you wish.

There are 25 different examples with inflections, style, and background grooves to keep you going (at different tempi if you'd like)

In this resource, it encompasses quarter notes, quarter rests, half notes, dynamics (forte and piano), and repeat signs into a canon exercise (to be repeated 4 times)

You can play these on boomwhackers, classroom percussion, Orff, recorders, or whatever you'd like.
