For many children, the first thought that comes to mind when winter approaches is “snow day!” The winter can be a time of hibernation as it is cold outside, many extracurricular activities have slowed down, and the days get darker much earlier. This packet focuses on learning about the different kinds of animals that live in the grasslands. Included are writing pages, project instructions, center activities and wall posters. It can be a simple packet for talking about the animals in general or you can go further by learning about the animals in the tropical grasslands vs. the temperate grasslands as well as learning which ones live in the African Savanna or the American Prairie/Great Plains. Table of Contents Pages 3-5 – These pages are a sorting activity where students can sort the animals according to whether they are in a tropical grassland or in a temperate grassland. They can also sort animals to whether they live in the African Savanna or the American Prairie/Great Plains. Pages 6-17 – The pages are for drawing pictures of different kinds of grasslands and drawing animals that live there. Student will write the names for the animals they draw. There are pages for grasslands, tropical grasslands, temperate grasslands, the African Savanna, the American Prairie and the Great Plains. Each type of grassland has 2 pages with different writing lines. Pages 18-23 – These are poster pages for each type of grassland and the animals that live there. Firstly, there is a great classroom display and sorting activity that is perfect for introducing students to some of the key events from the American Revolutionary War. There are 29 posters or task cards that include many of the key events from the time period.

Secondly, there is a close reading activity - children need to read through an informational text, and then answer comprehension and grammar questions, before completing an extension activity, crossword puzzle and wordsearch activity.

Finally, there is an informational text writing unit. The unit has been split into three separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each. Ideal for students learning about the American Revolutionary War.

Firstly, there are eight reading comprehension activities, or informational texts, about:

• Charlemagne
• William the Conqueror
• King Richard I
• Robin Hood
• Genghis Khan
• Joan of Arc
• The Renaissance
• The War of the Roses

These activities require NO PREP and have a body of text that students need to read through thoroughly; then they can use the text to find the comprehension and grammar answers. All texts then have an extension activity, a crossword and a wordsearch for those fast finishers. Answers, for teacher use, are on the final page of each document.

Then, there are three biography writing units about Charlemagne, Joan of Arc and William the Conqueror. The units have been split into four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each.

Also, there is an opinion writing unit about who was the most influential figure from the Middle Ages: Charlemagne, Joan of Arc or William the Conqueror. This unit has again been split into three or four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each.

Finally, there is a Middle Ages Timeline Activity and Display. It is perfect for introducing students to the some of the key events and people of the period.
