For many children, the first thought that comes to mind when winter approaches is “snow day!” The winter can be a time of hibernation as it is cold outside, many extracurricular activities have slowed down, and the days get darker much earlier. When children are cooped up inside, they can become restless and bored quite easily. In this lesson, students learn more about the history of the computer. The lesson starts with a Microsoft PowerPoint whole class presentation that gives an overview of computer history from the 1950’s through current times. Next, students work in small groups to research history information from an assigned decade and then to create a presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint (or Google Slides) to share with the class. Students take notes during the presentations and then culminate their learning with a short quiz over the material. A study sheet is provided to cover the material from each decade that will be tested to give students an opportunity to review the information (or to assist in the case of absences or presentations that are incomplete). This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary grades or high school as well. This packet focuses on learning about the different kinds of animals that live in the grasslands. Included are writing pages, project instructions, center activities and wall posters. It can be a simple packet for talking about the animals in general or you can go further by learning about the animals in the tropical grasslands vs. the temperate grasslands as well as learning which ones live in the African Savanna or the American Prairie/Great Plains. Table of Contents Pages 3-5 – These pages are a sorting activity where students can sort the animals according to whether they are in a tropical grassland or in a temperate grassland. They can also sort animals to whether they live in the African Savanna or the American Prairie/Great Plains. Pages 6-17 – The pages are for drawing pictures of different kinds of grasslands and drawing animals that live there. Student will write the names for the animals they draw. There are pages for grasslands, tropical grasslands, temperate grasslands, the African Savanna, the American Prairie and the Great Plains. Each type of grassland has 2 pages with different writing lines. Pages 18-23 – These are poster pages for each type of grassland and the animals that live there. There are poster pages for grasslands, tropical grasslands, temperate grasslands, the African Savanna, the American Prairie and the Great Plains. Pages 24-29 – These are clip cards for telling whether the animals live in the African Savanna or the American Prairie. Cards are included with and without the animal names. Pages 36-41 – These are clip cards for telling whether the animals live in the tropical grassland or the temperate grassland. Cards are included with and without the animal names. Page 42 – This is a memory/concentration game. Print this sheet twice and cut them out to make the game! Pages 43-50 – Available in color and in black and white, these are Grassland picture cards. They can be used with page 40/41 as sorting mats or you can hang them for reference in your room. You can also combine these from other sets to create a habitat book. Pages 51-52 – Available in color and in black and white, they are small animal cards to use to sort on the grassland mats. Pages 53-55 - Instructions and templates for Grassland project. Pages 56-63 – True or False Task Cards: Print on Card stock and laminate. Have students circle whether what the cards say are true or false. Available in color and black and white. Has Answer Key!

Each experiment includes a detailed instruction sheet with materials lists and step by step directions for the experiment. There is a recording page for students to make predictions and record the results of the project. Also provided are journal pages for students to write why they think the results happened the way they did. Journal pages are differentiated where appropriate.

Plants We Eat Sort:

We can eat all kinds of plants. This parts of a plant sort includes real photographic images to sort. This sort includes flowers, seeds, leaves, stems, roots, and fruits. There are four pictures for each plant part.

Plants Interactive Notebook Pages:

1. Parts of a Flower - This page covers flower, stem, leaf and root. Use the flower provided or have students draw their own to go under the flaps.

2. We Eat Plants - This page covers all parts of plants and the foods we can eat from each part. Students draw or find pictures in magazines/grocery fliers to put under each flap.

3. What do plants need? - This page shows plants need air, water, food and light to grow. Use magazines to cut out pictures or draw pictures to represent each under the flaps.

These pages can fit in a composition book or spiral notebook.

Plants and Seeds Activities

Match pictures of plants and their seeds. Complete cut and paste activities to sort plants and seeds as well as to match the parent plant with its seed.

Desert Island Explorer is an engaging, two-week game-based sub unit designed for grades 5 to 9, offering an immersive and bilingual experience centered around the theme of desert islands. This project-based learning module combines elements of language arts, science, and teamwork to enhance students' critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative skills.
