EL Education Skills Block Second Grade High Frequency Word Assessment

By Tech for Teaching

EL EDUCATION (Expeditionary Learning)

Second Grade High Frequency Word Class Benchmark Assessment

Efficient High-Frequency Word Recognition Benchmarking with Google Sheets™

These words are taught within the EL Education Skills Block Lessons for second grade. Duplicate words have been removed with the first instance of the word remaining for a total of 121 words per probe. Words appear in in the order they are taught.

This all-in-one Google Sheets™ workbook is designed to help you benchmark high-frequency word recall for up to 40 students, six times a year! With individual tabs for each student, you can easily track progress and analyze data for your entire class or caseload, making it easy to create accurate IEP goals and share data with parents or administrators. The workbook even features automatic tracking of missed words for targeted practice, and student and class average or median graphs to demonstrate progress throughout the year.

What is included in the Google Sheets™ workbook:

  • CLASS DATA SHEET: A sheet displaying the scores for your entire class across six reporting periods, with conditional formatting to highlight students in the low or high range. You can use filters to identify students in need of word recall intervention.
  • CLASS AVERAGE AND MEDIAN GRAPHS: Two graphs that show the overall average and median growth across the six reporting periods, with a trend line to demonstrate whether student high-frequency word recall is increasing or decreasing.
  • ASSESSOR PROBES: Each student (up to 40) will have a tab within the workbook with six assessments per tab. Simply check the missed words to calculate words read correctly. Missed words are also tracked and added to the "Words to Practice" box and the student graph!
  • STUDENT PROBES: Two versions (horizontal and vertical) of the student probe can be printed right from the workbook! Font type and size can be adjusted to meet your needs!
  • STUDENT DATA: Each student has a separate tab with a data sheet that includes a graph demonstrating progress and a list of missed words for each reporting period. This makes it easy to share student progress with parents or create targeted intervention resources!

Check out this WORD CARD CREATOR or this WORD PROBE CREATOR for creating materials to target the specific needs of your students!

Fry's Sight Words Checklist-Second (Automatically Counts Correct Words)

By Tech for Teaching

This is a PDF Form with the Second Hundred Fry's Instant Words. As the student reads the words, the assessor touches the box next to the word if it is correct. The form automatically counts the number correct and displays it in the upper right corner. There is also a table to add date and number correct to see improvement over time. This works very well on an iPad with an app like Adobe Expert. I like to use the Fry's Instant Word PowerPoint presentation in conjunction with this form.
