This is a simple to use for that allows students to provide themselves feedback on their reading (using a specific strategy). The form also provides space for a peer and teacher feedback, as well as a place for the student to set a goal for next time.

Beyond the primary grades teachers often seem to forget about checking students reading fluency. This is a simple to use form for students to provide themselves a self-feedback on their read aloud fluency. Teachers can then use the same form to provide their own feedback on the students reading fluency. File states to use Audacity (a free download online) but other recording programs/devices may be used - this is just a personal choice/what is available on our school computers. I was getting frustrated trying to find texts to support my biodiversity unit, and was finding my students could truly only find pertinent, engaging information by researching. What I had at my disposition was outdated; or didn't particularly touch on diversity, or was overly focused on specific species of animals... It simply wasn't cutting it. I wanted to teach with a cross-curricular approach and integrate biodiversity-themed readings in with my language arts program. Ta-Da!

This is a 25- question quiz for chapters 10-12 of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Students are given quotes broken down by chapter and need to identify the speaker. This will check that they've been keeping up with their reading and comprehending as they read.

This document is a quiz which contains 12 quotes from chapters 8 and 9 of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Students must identify the speaker of the quote. A word bank of 10 names is included, but some names are used once and some are not used at all. It's a great quick assessment to check your students' understanding of the chapters. An answer key is included.

This product is a quiz with questions from chapters 1-3. I use it as a reading check to make sure my students are keeping up and understanding the text. There is a sequencing events section, a characterization matching section, and a true/ false plot section. There are 25 questions in total. I've formatted the quiz so it is on a half sheet of paper, with the first two sections on the front and the third on the back, so you will have to make double- sided copies and then cut them in half. Finally, the packet has a page where each student will monitor a partner in the opposite circle. They will make a check each time their partner speaks, and paraphrase a meaningful comment their partner made. Lastly, the file contains the socratic circle rubric.

When you print out the file, you'll see packet A on the top half of the sheet, packet B on the bottom half, and then the rubric as the last page of the file. You'll need to cut each packet page in half after you print them out, as each booklet you give to the students is only half a page. They are labeled A and B. Give half your class A, half B, and allow them to plan! The day of the circle, you'll let A discuss for maybe 20-30 minutes, then flip-flop your circles and have B discuss.

My students really enjoy Socratic Seminars! I have found it works better when you give each group three different questions, so you don't see the same discussion 2 times, which is how this packet is set up. I used the Socratic Circle as their "final test grade" for Daniel's Story. The students need to have finished the story to answer the questions included in the packet.

This is an independent reading preparedness and preparation rubric I use to make sure students come to class prepared to read, and stay focused and respectful to their peers while reading in class. It is a 4 point rubric, and focuses on preparedness and performance. Students use it to self-assess their own reading habits, and set a goal to work towards at the bottom. Then I go in and score them with a different color pen on the rubric, so they can see where they believe they are, and where I believe they are on the rubric.
