Write the Room - EMOJI Edition!

By Jason Litt

In a fast-paced game geared up to get your upper level elementary school students excited, we present to you "Write the Room - EMOJI Edition!"

The game is simple as ever. Scattered around your music room are 12 rhythms (which you can cut out and affix anywhere you'd like) with a corresponding emoji attached to the rhythm.

You will make teams (or play individually!) and a pair of students from each team.

You will then play a sound clip for all of the students to hear. Their job is to listen to the clip, think of the rhythm in their head, and race around the room to find the emoji with the rhythm that they just heard!

The students race back to the board and presses on the emoji they think they heard (there will be a multiple choice of three rhythms, which one of them is the correct on). You will advance the slide and the correct emoji rhythm will turn green.

Play this through 12 rounds and keep score of which team wins or you can do it as an individual assessment. The kids LOVE this as they are assessing themselves by listening to the rhythm, remembering it, and identifying it somewhere in the room.

Have a great time with this one!

SOLFEGE BATTLE ROYALE! (Great for Centers!)

By Jason Litt

In SOLFEGE BATTLE ROYALE, students will receive a deck of random solfege syllables which they will turn face down and keep them to themselves.

  • (The way I do this is to take 50 random cards in a baggie and have one student be the "leader" and hand out 10-15 cards per student)

Students may receive two of the same card, three of the same card, or even no particular solfege card during the game. (You will decide whether students get 10, 15, 20, etc... the more cards the students get, the more opportunities they have to play... and win!!!)

Students (up to 5 players) may sit in a circle or around a hula hoop and count down from 3… They will say "3...2...1... BATTLE!"

As soon as they hit the word “BATTLE!”, just like the card game "WAR" every student in the circle throws their top card down into the circle

  • The students will look around and identify which syllable is the highest in the series. As we’ve learned, the syllables go ascending (up) from the following syllables…

  • Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti

  • Once the students identify the highest syllable, the student with the highest syllable is declared the winner of that battle!

  • The student gets to take all of the cards from the other students and repeat again

Then they keep it going and going and going! Then the students play a new round until time is up and whoever is left with the most solfege cards at the end of the game is the winner!

All you need are:

  • about 12 printouts of Solfege Cards cut (lamination optional)
  • 5 or 6 hula hoops for the kids to sit around (if you don't have these, they can sit in a circle)
  • some fun background music (optional!)
  • and run the powerpoint

You're there to just facilitate :) Have a great time with this, kids LOVE it!
