DESCRIPTION

Students always need additional support in mastering the skill of inferencing. You can use the Freak the Mighty Multiple-Choice Inference Task Cards to help students practice making inferences.

Task Cards

The first set of 16 Inference Task Cards consists of a short selection/passage from the book followed by an inference-based question. There are four multiple choice answers choices that students choose from. Students read the passage and choose the correct answer. Students will need to pay close attention to details to choose the correct answer. The inference questions are centered around character traits, character relationships, and situations. A Student Answer Sheet is included for students to write their answers.
The second set of 16 Inference Task Cards is the actual “Answer Key” set. The Answer Key set of Task Cards highlight the correct multiple-choice answers in the color red and highlights relevant evidence that supports the correct answers in the color yellow.
This is engaging practice for your students as it is perfect for mini-lessons, whole class instruction, cooperative learning, intervention groups, literacy centers, and small group instruction.

Test Format Version (Print and Digital)

Also included is a "Test Format" version of the Inference Task Cards (same passages in the Task Cards). This includes an ANSWER KEY as well! The test consists of 16 multiple-choice inference questions.

Inference Graphic Organizer (Print and Digital)

Included is a one-page Three-Column Graphic Organizer Chart that requires students to make evidence-based inferences. Students record the following information in the Inference Graphic Organizer: Information from the text, their own Prior/Background Knowledge, and Inferences. This is a great scaffolding tool for ELL and Special Ed students.

Inference Bookmarks

These bookmarks include sentence stems consistent with making inferences. Students can reference these inference stems to stimulate their thinking, increase comprehension, and actively engage in reading and discussion. Students can also use these inference stems in their writing! These bookmarks can be used to support reading comprehension in any text.

Suggestions on how you can use the Multiple-Choice Inference Task Cards:

1. Quiz or Test - You can make a copy of the set of Task Cards and distribute to each student as a quiz or test. You, as the teacher , can then select the Task Card Inference question that students performed the lowest on and use that to review and develop/modify your instruction.

2. Small Group Instruction - You can have students engage in small group instruction where you provide additional support on the skill of inferencing. These Inference Task Cards will support that type of instruction. You can have all students in small groups practice with the same inference task card question number or you can distribute 1-2 Task Cards to each student to practice, then review.

3. Mini Lesson - You can load these Inference Task Cards on the Smartboard and use them to demonstrate how to make an inference. They can also be used to discuss the importance of details and how they are used to encourage inferential thinking. You can even use these Task Cards to discuss the difference between relevant details and irrelevant details. Finally, you can use these Inference Task Cards during the guided practice portion of your lesson.

4. Formative Assessment / Exit Slips - These Inference Task Cards make a great, quick formative assessment! You can easily check for understanding by distributing 1-2 Task Cards to each student to complete. You can circulate the room to do a "Quick Check" to see if students "Got it." You can also use these Task Cards as Exit Slips by distributing 1-2 Task Cards to each student to complete and hand in to you before they leave.

5. Partner Study - You can have students pair up and “test each other.” Partners not only ask each other to choose the correct multiple-choice answer, but to highlight or underline specific details in the selection/passage to support their inference-based answer. The Answer Key set of Task Cards are helpful in the sense that students can take ownership of reviewing the correct answers and sharing that with their partners**.**

6. Test Prep Review - You can use these Task Cards to review how to answer multiple-choice questions. You can also use these cards to teach students a variety of multiple-choice strategies (process of elimination, context clues, textual evidence, tone, etc.) to help them select the right answers to questions and aid comprehension.

This pack includes 24 scavenger hunt cards and a printable answer sheet allowing students to record up to twelve answers.

I designed this set with the library in mind but you can easily use this in your classroom.

The purpose of this scavenger hunt is to familiarize/support students in using text clues to determine the subject of a book.

How to use:

* Print, laminate and cut each card.. You will need a pile of picture books and a selection of nonfiction books. Make sure you have books that will answer each of the task cards, and some extras that don’t match any. You may also wish to select books that could meet the requirement of more than one task card.

Making Inferences is a challenging skill to master, especially for lower-level students. This resource includes two sets of Picture Inference Task Cards (80 cards in total) that are differentiated to meet the needs of both lower-level and higher-level students. The pictures in these task cards are very relevant as students "see" these everyday images almost anywhere they go!

DESCRIPTION

▶️ The first set of 40 cards, which are the color RED, have pictures that students can use to make inferences. These RED Picture Inference Task Cards include guiding questions to help lower level students make inferences.

▶️ The second set of 40 cards, which are the color GREEN, have the SAME pictures that students can use to make inferences, but without the guiding questions. Instead, this set of Picture Inference Task Cards read: “What can you infer from this picture?” and “Why do you think that?” These questions require high-level students to think for themselves as they pay close attention to picture details.

▶️ Finally, this resource includes a Picture Inference Worksheet that students can use to record their inferences and evidence. Students can record inferences and evidence for two pictures.

▶️ This is engaging practice for your especially ELL and Special Ed students and is perfect for mini-lessons, whole class instruction, cooperative learning, intervention groups, literacy centers, and small group instruction.

Suggestions on how you can use the Picture Inference Task Cards:

1. Small Group Instruction - You can have students engage in small group instruction where you provide additional support on the skill of inferencing. These Picture Inference Task Cards will support that type of instruction. You can have all students in small groups practice with the same Picture Inference Task Card number or you can distribute 1-2 task cards to each student to practice making inferences and citing evidence before reviewing.

2. Mini Lesson - You can load these Picture Inference Task Cards on the Smartboard and use them to demonstrate how to make an inference, while paying closing attention to details. They can also be used to discuss the importance of details and how they are used to encourage inferential thinking. You can even use these task cards to discuss the difference between relevant picture details and irrelevant details. Finally, you can use these inference task cards during the guided practice portion of your lesson.

3. Exit Slips - You can use these Picture Inference Task Cards as Exit Slips by distributing 1-2 task cards to each student to complete and hand in to you before they leave.

4. Partner Study - You can have students pair up and “test/question each other.” Partners not only ask each other to make valid inferences and support it with relevant picture details, but to be open to a variety of valid inferences that can be made from the same picture.

Students always need additional support in mastering the skill of inferencing. You can use these two sets of 16 Freak The Mighty Multiple-Choice Inference Task Cards to help students practice making inferences.

▶️ Inference Task Cards

✅ The first set of 16 Inference Task Cards consists of a short selection/passage from the book followed by an inference-based question. There are four multiple choice answers choices that students choose from. Students read the passage and choose the correct answer. Students will need to pay close attention to details to choose the correct answer. The inference questions are centered around character traits, character relationships, and situations.

✅ A Student Answer Sheet is included for students to write their answers.

✅ The second set of 16 Inference Task Cards are the actual “Answer Key” set of the first set of Task Cards. The Answer Key set of Task Cards highlight the correct multiple-choice answers in the color red and highlights relevant evidence that supports the correct answers in the color yellow.

It involves observing a situation, then using clues with background knowledge to figure out what has happened or what is happening. The ability to make social inferences is an essential social skill. Many of our students with learning and attention issues have difficulty reading body language. Failure to pick up on non-verbal signals, including body language and gestures, can make it hard for students or children to navigate all sorts of social situations. Body language and gestures convey messages, meaning, and important information beyond what is said. This resource is intended to help students "read" body language and navigate social situations successfully. It is also intended to provide students with opportunities to practice social skills by reading and responding to people’s body languages and gestures in an appropriate, positive manner.

The Picture Task Cards contain highly relevant pictures of people using body language to communicate meaning and feelings. The body languages of the people in the task cards portray body gestures that students are familiar with and that they often see all around them in a variety of real-life social settings and situations. Students are asked what the person's body language is communicating, and what it indicates the person might be feeling.

► Picture Worksheet Variation #1: Contains two questions about the message the person’s body language is sending, and how the person is feeling. In this worksheet, students have to provide evidence to support their answer about how the person in the picture might be feeling.

► Picture Worksheet Variation #2: A blank space is provided for you to generate your own question and students write it on the line and answer it.

This resource provides a perfect opportunity for your students to understand social cues, interpret body language, practice social skills, and make inferences. This resource features real life scenarios and highly relevant photographs of people. Students with autism spectrum disorders often have the most difficult time with these skills and can benefit greatly from the visuals.

SUGGESTIONS FOR USE:

How/When To Use Scenario Task Cards

Role-Playing: Students can collaborate in pairs or groups to act out a variety of scenarios and demonstrate appropriate responses. Role-playing activities can also be used to show how "response" skills are used improperly and then asking the 'audience' to help reenact properly. This activity can ultimately improve confidence, communication, and assertiveness skills and further help students understand the difference between appropriate and inappropriate responses to people's body language and gestures.
Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes related to body language then perform the skit for the class.
Writing Response: Students can be given a scenario to read and then write their responses. Students can switch papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these real-life scenarios.
Discussion: Students can discuss the Body Language / Non-verbal Communication Scenario Task Cards in groups or whole class. They can discuss things like “What would you do?”, “Why would you do that?”, and “What are some other options you could consider?”
