This fun and engaging deck of 20 CARDS will reinforce PHONEMIC AWARENESS SKILLS in students as they work independently to identify whether a SOUND is heard in the beginning, middle, or end of a word.

Each card includes a picture and a dot with CLEAR AUDIO of a phoneme attached. Students are required to LISTEN TO THE PHONEME and DRAG THE DOT to the beginning, middle, or end in the ELKONIN BOXES depending on where it is heard in the word.

AUDIO is provided for all items and the first two cards provide SCAFFOLDED DIRECTIONS with audio. IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK is provided and students will be automatically directed to the next card once the correct answer has been chosen.

PHONEMIC AWARENESS, or the ability to MANIPULATE INDIVIDUAL SOUNDS OR PHONEMES within words, is a critical skill for children to learn prior to decoding and spelling.

Being able to successfully IDENTIFY, SUBSTITUTE, and DELETE PHONEMES in words is a predictor of future reading success. Because phonemic awareness involves the sounds or phonemes in words, it does not include or require knowledge of alphabetic characters.

These task cards target the SEGMENTATION tier of the hierarchy of phonemic awareness.

This Match-Select-Name reading unit is based on a reading intervention method developed by Patricia Oelwein. There has been a significant amount of research done on the efficacy of this method. It is shown to be beneficial for students with exceptionalities including Down’s Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder who are struggling to learn to read using phonics.

There are four stages in the method:

1 - Acquisition (Matching, Selecting, Naming)

2 - Fluency (Practice and Review)

3 - Transfer (Use of new fonts and coloured paper)

4 - Generalization (Ability to read the words in any context/format)

I designed this set with the library in mind but you can easily use this in your classroom.

The purpose of this scavenger hunt is to familiarize/support students in using text clues to determine the subject of a book.

How to use:

Phonemic awareness, or the ability to MANIPULATE INDIVIDUAL SOUNDS OR PHONEMES within words, is a critical skill for children to learn prior to decoding and spelling.

Being able to successfully IDENTIFY, SUBSTITUTE, and DELETE PHONEMES in words is a predictor of future reading success. Because phonemic awareness involves the sounds or phonemes in words, it does not include or require knowledge of alphabetic characters.

These task cards target the SEGMENTATION tier of the hierarchy of phonemic awareness.
