How it works:

The caller shuffles the calling cards to mix them up, then reads the top calling card. It has 2 parts:

Directions for the Card Game:

• This game was inspired by the game TABOO

1. Students are put into small groups with an even number of players.
2. Each group is split into 2 teams.
3. The clue giver will start a 1 minute timer and turn over a card so nobody can see. (colors don' matter)
4. The clue giver now says words (not sounds or gestures) to get their team to guess the word at the top of the card.
5. The clue giver cannot say any of the words (or forms of the words) listed on the card. Formations include: abbreviations, tenses (past, present, future), initials, spelling, letters, sounds like, rhyming, smaller version words, compound words.

6. Teammates can guess as many words as possible before the timer runs out.
7. The clue giver may pass on a word and place it in a discard pile.
8. If the clue giver uses an illegal word, the opposing team who is monitoring, can sound a buzzer or shout the word of your choice. Then the clue giver must place the card in the discard pile and try a new word.
9. When the timer is done the team will count up how many points earned based off of how many words were guessed correctly. The opposing team gets one point for each card placed in the discard pile.
10 Switch teams and repeat. The team with the highest points, wins!

English Dots and Boxes Game - I AM / ARE YOU STATEMENTS - No prep printable

An easy and fun no-prep game that will elicit a lot of exposure and pronunciation for the target vocabulary and grammar when teaching I am / I am not / Are you. This is a one-page dots & boxes game including directions. This game could be laminated and used repeatedly with dry-erase markers or played on an iPad with annotation / whiteboard tools. Play this game along with my Go Fish / 7 Families Game on the same theme to provide differentiation, or save money and buy the bundle.

The following constructions are used: I AM - I AM NOT - ARE YOU?

The following adjectives are used: HUNGRY - THIRSTY - AFRAID - HOT - COLD - RIGHT - WRONG

Objective: Complete more boxes than your component. Each player draws lines using a different color. On your turn, make a horizontal or vertical line from one dot to another. Say the words on either side of the line you drew. If you complete a box on your turn, draw an X in the box using your color. Once all of the boxes have been completed, count to see who got the most. Go Fish / 7 Families - This classic card game is fun for students of all ages! Looking for easy prep literacy activities for independent work during differentiated reading instruction? This version of the game is for practicing I CAN + VERB to say you know how to do something and is an excellent resource for ESL. Play this game along with my beginner level Dots & Boxes or intermediate level Dots & Boxes activities to provide differentiation, or save money and buy the bundle!

Each of the 7 "families of cards" begins with one of the following, and verbs in the present tense are used in the I - YOU - HE - SHE - WE - THEY forms:

• I can + verb
• I can't + verb
• Can I + verb

The following verbs are used in this game: SING - SWIM - DRAW - WRITE - DANCE - READ - RUN

42 playing cards to print on heavy paper or card stock

How to play

This card game is an excellent way to practice and memorize the verb CAN and the I CAN + VERB construction. It will have your students speaking to each other in English the whole time! They will make affirmative and negative statements about what they can and can't do.

One player distributes five cards to each player (2 to 4 per group). The rest of the cards are placed in a stack in the middle. One player begins the game by asking another player to give him a card. He or she might say, "Do you have I CAN SING?"

The goal is to come up with 7 complete families. The different verbs represent the families. There are 6 cards to a family (I - YOU - HE - SHE - WE - THEY). Students will find it helpful to group together the cards that have the same picture at the top (flower, flip-flops, etc.) If the player doesn't have it, he says "Go fish". If he draws the card that he asked for, he can continue to play and ask someone for another card. Each time a player comes up with all six members of a family, he can make a stack. At the end of the game, the player with the most sets of families wins!
