Chaque semaine, les élèves découvriront un personnage fictif placé au cœur d'un événement historique majeur, avec un focus sur le contexte temporel, géographique, les personnes impactées et les répercussions à long terme de cet événement.

Definition:
A Mini Socratic Seminar is a scholarly discussion of an essential question in which student opinions are shared and refined through dialogue with other students in small groups. In this mini format, the teacher or seminar leader facilitates the discussion for the small groups.
Purpose:
In a Socratic Seminar, participants seek to answer an essential question and gain deeper understanding of laws, ideas, issues, values, and/or principles presented through rigorous and thoughtful dialogue
Advantages:
- Teaches respect for diverse ideas, people, and practices
- Enhances students' knowledge
- Creates a community of inquiry
- Develops critical thinking, problem solving, speaking, and listening skills
- Clarifies one's ideas, ethics and values
- Maximizes student participation
- Encourages divergent thinking
Mini Seminar Directions:
- Students are placed in small groups or virtual break out rooms of 5-6 students.
- Teacher poses the essential question.
- Teacher chooses a Socratic Seminar leader for each group.
- The leader facilitates the seminar discussion by guiding group members to a deeper and clarified consideration of the ideas, a respect for varying points of view, and adherence to and respect for the seminar process.
- Students may pose new questions when the discussion is exhausted. New questions posed must relate to students’ ideas and contributions in response to the initial essential question.
- If dialogue slows use one of the provided questions to encourage discussion.
- Students complete the participant checklist during the last 5 minutes of class.

This product was made for students to learn the following:
In this product, students will learn about the Missouri Compromise, Compromise of 1850, and North and South Notes and Review. Vocabulary covered: raw materials, free states and slave states as of 1820, trains, factories, Eli Whitney, cotton, and slaves. A vocabulary review is included as well as a fill in the blank vocabulary review that includes a key.
Students will learn about the Missouri Compromise, Compromise of 1850, and North and South Notes and Review. The United States government will be initially reviewed to review who Congress and the Senate is, but the House of Representatives and the three branches of government. The North and South are reviewed in this product that includes the years between 1820 - 1860.
The North: What was used at this time to run machines, who owned machines, how machines were powered, how and why cities started to develop, how raw materials and factories relate with one another, the use of the railroad brought factory products to people, working conditions in factories, and changes in cities that took place
The South: Cotton was growing on plantations and farms in the South, who worked on these plantations, how plantations grew and who worked on these farms, who invented the cotton gin, what the cotton gin did and how it was different from removing seeds by hand and how much time was saved, what cotton was known for in the South, who worked on plantations and how they were treated, and the kind of work slaves were required to do in the South.
The Missouri Compromise:
In 1820, how many states were free states and how many states were slave states. The argument that the North and South had with each other about wanting Missouri to be on their side and why, what people wanted in the North and what people wanted in the South after the Missouri Compromise, why the North and South were divided, which states became free states and slaves states between 1820-1850, the Compromise of 1850 and what it entailed, and when slavery ended.
The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. Throughout the product, after each page of notes is reviewed, students will answer short answer comprehension questions. At the end of the product, students are provided with a review that includes multiple choice questions and short answer questions.

Figures That Helped Abolish Slavery Scavenger Hunt (No Prep!)

This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that is based on the key figures that helped to abolish slavery and are studied in the 4th grade curriculum. Students will read about Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Samuel Cornish, William Lloyd Garrison, Sojourner Truth, John Brown, Abraham Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony and Harriet Beecher Stowe. This activity will have students reading about how each individual aided the abolition movement. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #8. Students MUST record which task card they found the answer on in their answer sheet under the “FOUND CARDS #” column. That column will be used at the end for the 4 digit lock code. They will follow the clues to find the correct 4 digit code.
This activity would be a great review before assessments, as a center activity, a group activity, etc. Students will be engaged with the learning while having a fun time trying to solve all of the clues!

American Revolutionary War Scavenger Hunt (No prep!)

This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that is based on the causes of the Revolutionary War that aligns with the 4th grade curriculum but would work for grades 3-5. Students will read about the Declaration of Independence, the Boston Tea Party, The Boston Massacre, Taxation without Representation, and the Intolerable Acts. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #8. Students MUST record which task card they found the answer on in their answer sheet under the “FOUND CARDS #” column. That column will be used at the end for the 4 digit lock code. They will follow the clues to find the correct 4 digit code.
This activity would be a great review before assessments, as a center activity, a group activity, etc. Students will be engaged with the learning while having a fun time trying to solve all of the clues!

Geography: Understanding Culture and Subculture Cooperative Learning

In this product, students will learn about the 13 colonies and review the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies, what was the American Revolution and when it was fought, the groups that were involved in the American Revolution, the commander of the Continental Army - George Washington and why he was chosen, the difference between Loyalists and Patriots, why the British Soldiers thought the American Revolution would be easy, the challenges the Continental Army and Commander Washington faced during the American Revolution and how they overcame these challenges, the lack of training the Continental Army had and who helped train the soldiers, the trust and respect that the Continental Army had for Commander Washington and why, the Battle of Trenton, New Jersey - when it happened, who it was between, who won, and how they won, why France decided to help the Continental Army during the American Revolution, a brief overview of the First and Second Continental Congress and what they did during the American Revolution, how France, Germany, and Poland helped the Continental Army, Winter at Valley Forge - What happened, the struggles the Continental Army faced, training the Continental Army - Baron Friedrich von Steuben and what he trained the Continental Army to do, when the port city of Charleston, South Carolina was captured and who captured it, students will look at a map that shows battles along the eastern coast and they will answer questions utilizing the map, Francis Marion - The Swamp Fox and what he did to help the Continental Amy during the American Revolution and where his nickname came from, what the Declaration of Independence is, who drafted the Declaration of Independence and why, Battle of Newport, where it took place, who was involved, what the African Americans were promised for helping the Continental Army, who was promised freedom, The Battle of Yorktown - when it happened, how long the battle was, and who surrendered, Treaty of Paris - 1783 - what it was and what this treaty meant for the Continental Army, women during the American Revolution, and Elizabeth Hager and what she did to help during the American Revolution are reviewed in this product.
The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. After reviewing and discussing the notes, they will answer comprehension questions to review what was discussed on previous pages, students will read maps and answer questions based on the map provided. At the end of the product, students are provided with a review that includes multiple choice questions, short answer questions, and will choose 1 of the 10 major battles during the American Revolution that are provided and will research one battle and will be required to write down 5 facts about that battle.

In this product, students will learn about the 19th Amendment, what it is, the timeline as to how the 19th Amendment was put into effect and just how long it took. Information about the process it took and how it was rejected by different parts of the government is shared ranging from 1878 to the November 1920 election, what the women's suffrage movement was, who was involved, and what they did, President Woodrow Wilson, Harry Burn, Senator Aaron A. Sargent, Ellen Clark Sargent, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony and the role that each of them had in the passing of the 19th Amendment, students will learn about Congress - the Senate and the House of Representatives, and will briefly learn about the 3 Branches of Government to help students understand which branch helped pass the 19th Amendment, students will briefly learn about who was involved in World War I and what happened at the end of World War I, why women became involved in World War I, what their roles were in World War I, what jobs women had during this time, and how this lead to the 19th Amendment. Students will also learn about how the 19th Amendment in 1869 was different from 1920 and why, how the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was important as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, students will also learn about when women could vote in 15 states from 1869 - 1918, and the first states to ratify the 19 Amendment.
The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. Throughout the product, after each page of notes is reviewed, students will answer short answer comprehension questions and multiple choice questions to review what was discussed on previous pages. At the end of the product, students are provided with a review that includes multiple choice questions and short answer questions.
