In this lesson, students learn more about the history of the computer. The lesson starts with a Microsoft PowerPoint whole class presentation that gives an overview of computer history from the 1950’s through current times. Next, students work in small groups to research history information from an assigned decade and then to create a presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint (or Google Slides) to share with the class. Students take notes during the presentations and then culminate their learning with a short quiz over the material. Memories from the Year (video project) gives students an opportunity to share their memories from the school year as a culminating activity to the year. It uses the Web 2.0 tool, WeVideo, which is convenient for teachers and students since it does not require download. Students use existing pictures and videos or shoot additional ones and then combine those with WeVideo’s built in music to create a video retrospective of the year. The Winter Holiday Greeting Card Unit gives teachers and students three fun options to choose from to create a holiday project to share. Tutorials and projects are included for:

• Video eCard utilizing Kizoa (www.kizoa.com)

• Animated greeting card utilizing Microsoft PowerPoint

• Printable paper card, designed in Microsoft Word

Kizoa is a free Web 2.0 tool which allows students to create and edit videos online, as well as create ecards, photo collages, and edit photos. They can then share their finished product online or by saving it to their computer. No download is required to use the product, making it easy for teachers who are not able to download software on classroom computers to still give their students a choice in learning. The quick start tutorial included with the lesson is intended to help students get started with the program and then use the resources within the program to refine their creations. In this lesson, students learn fun facts about Wassily Kandinsky and his art as they complete a WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt) to answer questions about the topic. Then, they use that knowledge to create an art project of their own, using Kandinsky’s style, in Microsoft Paint, 3D Paint, or one of these free Web 2.0 tools: SketchPad (https://sketch.io/sketchpad/) or SumoPaint (https://www.sumopaint.com/home/#app) that do not require download. A complete answer key is provided for the WebQuest for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students. The student questions are included in both a print version and a digital (editable) version to make it easy for students to complete the lesson digitally or on paper. Also included are tutorial links to assist students with the software for the art project.

This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary as well.

This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.

Creating a Student Success Guidebook (brochure project) gives students an opportunity to share their knowledge and tips for success in middle school with the following year’s new incoming class of students. This is perfect for a technology or leadership class, or for a club that focuses on assisting students, such as Student Council. Students work in small teams to research an assigned topic about expectations in middle school, specific to their school. Next, they create one page of a brochure with their information which will finally be combined with the other teams’ pages to create a full brochure that can be published and distributed to incoming students. The project was created for 8th graders but could easily be adapted to use with 5th or 6th graders leaving elementary school and providing tips for success to new elementary students, or could be used by sophomores (or above) in high school to create a success guide for incoming high school freshmen.

This unit connects learning with technology to Social Studies. This is perfect for technology class or for use in a Social Studies or History classroom that wants to incorporate technology with a lesson. No download is required to use Canva (www.canva.com) - a free product, making it easy for teachers who are not able to download software on classroom computers to still give their students a choice in learning.

In this lesson, students are provided with a quick tutorial, as well as links to other resources to help them with their project. The tutorial is intended to help students get started with the program and then use the resources within the program to refine their creations. Students create a scrapbook about what their life would be like as an immigrant, either in the past or present after researching the topic. They use that information along with graphics, pictures and backgrounds from the Internet and also supplied in Canva, to create a finished scrapbook that shows their “experience” as an immigrant.

This is an excellent creative project to add to the end of a unit on Immigration. The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be used with upper elementary or high school students.
